Show r Ogden Monday May 12 1986 5A Letters Solution is needed for education problems - Parents vou can now rest easy according to the headlines Mr’ Karras and Mr Bangerter are 'now being “forced” to run the schools We have all been wondering why within 40 local school districts there has arisen no “real” leadership to run for a Board of Education Why is it that no one had ever before thought of dissolving these unimaginative groups supplanting them with “real wisdom" from Salt Lake? Possibly as early as this special session of the Legislature the gods will speak from or Delphi once again Still there is some confusion in our illiterate minds: Why in April of 1959 when (the Utah Foundation reported) the State Budget was $200 million and the Legislature had increased it 118 percent and 50 cents of the total tax dollar was earmarked for our children's education 25 years later & when the state income has doubled etc (it's called “being richer”) and we have fewer children per capita we now afford only 43 cents of our total tax dollar on our children? Surely we could never question Mr Karras’ priorities or suggest that his children are less important than in the days of his parents Maybe the schools really are being run by incompetents! In his parents’ day another leader from Roy was quoted as saying “How is it with these fantastic salaries we can't hire any good help?” Might I suggest K JfdSlS? IMah has of hasing the highest birthrate in the nation With all these children it should follow that we are the forefront in providing child care Unfortunately that is not the case The child care dilemma is a tremendous problem for working parents Currently employers do not provide paternity leave and if they give maternity leave it is rarely for more than a few precious weeks Requests for day care centers have been dismissed as something Utah is not readv for we fire all certifi- is: cated personnel and hire “second Challenge ‘I will’ Welling Through “Innocence Lost” we arc able to honestly see without exaggeration the real world our children live in If we will but see Hopefully everyone will realize Macfarlane that a gift a great public service is being offered through this seOgden ries all because our newspaper is willing to risk reaching in digging out and displaying the “ugly malignancy” that Mr Hatch warns could spread (May 4 Editor’s Note) I feel that the Ogden in the tradition of the greatest newspapers is trying to initiate citizen action out of the awareness created through these superbly researched and reported articles As evidenced by the fine newspaper folks and by those who have been at the public meetings for the Red Ribbon Campaign there are movers and shakers in this here town! The fault seems to lie with some of the general public ‘cause when the movers shake ‘um they don’t move out like they use ‘ta least not enough to produce the results needed for social change to turn negative to positive to tilt the scales back into balance to insure the preservation of our children's minds bodies and future productivity Remember the Little Red Hen who asked “Who will help me plant the wheat?” and they all said “Not I!”? Well too many overburdened volunteers and professionals are trying to do the job for our kids to raise a healthy seed that will amount to a good product Few recruits are on the Slay away from companies that produce weapons The spector of harm to life on 'Earth has again been raised by ‘the nuclear disaster in the USSR Hopefully that was a rare accident which will not recur with increasing frequency ' However what makes the picture dismal is that thousands of people are employed in this area in jobs that are designated for making weapons which can someday be deliberately used to kill other people Using the nation's tax dollars for this purpose are Morton Thio-kInc and TRW Inc Morton Thiokol is responsible for the HARM ICBM Trident and missiles while TRW is giving engineering and technical assistance for the Minuteman ICBM and is involved with 1000 Minuteman missile silos in five states I am sure that these companies can find some creative alternatives for their government handouts Perhaps they need a little encouragement As a starter I propose a boycott of all Morton salt products Yes the group that makes weapons of war is part of the same group that processes ordinary table salt! propose the following acronym for this action: BOMBS — Boycott Of Morton's Bad Salt It is “bad” salt not because of its quality but because it is connected with the making of missiles So let us stay away from that company's products until it breaks its connection with the awful weapons of war James Petrait OSFS Ogden Tuesday the Ogden chaper of the National Organization for Women is sponsoring an open discussion on this topic Interested people are encouraged to attend Come to the YWCA on 27th and Adams at 7:30 pm Please use the back aoor and go to the upstairs meeting room is pending to estabLegislation lish a national policy on parental leave Locally we must demonstrate the need for convenient quality care for our children Pant Harrison Roy echoing across nation job” housewives (surely they would really care about our children) Possibly the real solution is soon to come A “S working against solutions to our youths’ problems with “Ain't it awful” and “Why don't they do something?” — seeing no personal responsibility in the matter Majbe it's just fear that too much time and sweat and pain arc required if they become involved Recently at the State PTA Convention there was a packed room for “Stress Management” and a one for children's “Just Say No” and “Peer Support” programs (teaching kids to help each other to resist temptations) Perhaps is where it selfishly stands for adults right now Well do the Little Red Hens have time for stress management? Despite their diligent efforts I fear they will soon be flat on their backs with feet skvward before cally they reap the rewards of a healthier future generation More tax dollars for more programs seems to create more willing to let someone else put band aids on the exposed malignancy A team effort to inoculate against and perform suris needed gery where necessary So watch the Punky Brewster show May llth with your children attend the town meeting May 14th at Dec Elementary School at 7 pm Dig out a red ribbon to wear May 18lh - 24th as a sign of your personal commitment to our children to help them grow up strong saying no to the ills of society that rob them of their potential Tie your red ribbon with the nation and our community at 4 pm west sidewalk Washington Boulevard May 22nd from 2nd to 40th Streets Shall we hear echoes of “I will” throughout the country? Perhaps the Little Red Hens will get to see the product of their efforts yet We’ll see Roberta Crccr Liberty ‘Innocence Lost’ paints gloomy picture I've been reading the "Inno- cence Lost" series you've had in the newspaper this last week As a mother of young children feel you've painted a pretty gloomy picture for me and my know we don't live youngsters a perfect society and that you are trying to point out the pitfalls that are here but you make it sound as though there are no good teens around Surely there are plenty of teens who are doing good things: dress modestly don't cut school classes spend hours as volunteers have learned how to say “no” to drugs drink- ing and premarital sex hold down jobs while they attend school and yes even talk to their parents! How about a scries of good things about teens? You capital-- I ize on the bad that’s being done and those who are doing good but receive no recognition some-itimes figure that the only way to receive recognition is to rebel Not only would this series be a idea but it would give refreshing credit to the many fine teenagers in this community Let’s give them the credit they deserve Maybe those who arc in a state of rebellion will decide to follow their lead Wendy IF LPis Ogden Speaker to address family relationships Recently I read an article enti“Society's Ills” Stated within the results of a Utah Survey revealing that 67 percent of the people felt that the family was at the root of solving our society's problems Only 16 percent felt the government could do it and only 15 percent felt the schools could help tled were the family is the root of our country's strengths and weaknesses the Ogden residents need to be aware of a wonderful program to help parents to help their children Richard and Linda Ever authored a book entitled “Teaching Children Joy" From that book developed a parents' cooperative to create a for mothers to receive and teach cooperatively their own children and the neighborhood children Then came Teaching Children Responsibility — for elementary age children and now Teaching Realizing Children Charity for ages This is a program to help to get away from the gross we see so much of today Also new is a program called “Lifebalanee” to help parents with control of their lives to prioritize the family Having used TCJ and TCR this year I can honestly say it is one of the best things that has ever happened to our family I have reviewed TCC and LifeBalance and find them a Godsend I am anxious to begin these programs also Richard Eyre will be speaking at our Weber County Library at 7 pm on Wednesday the 15th Anyone concerned for the growth and success of their children and themselves as parents will really want to be there Cyndee Holland Winfield Suits Our Winfield Suit Collection means just one thing: tremendous suits at tremendous values Their lightweight high quality fabrics will keep you comfortable right on through the summer And with savings of $18 your budget wdl be comfortable too!
