Nicaragua during an April 8 session of the United Methodist Church’s world missions board meeting here The Rev Jimmy Hassan an evangelical leader and former national director of the Campus Crusade for Christ in Nicaragua told the Latin America committee of the board that “from the time the Sandinistas came to power the evangelical churches in Nicaragua have been persecuted” But the Rev Tomas Tellez executive secretary of the Baptist Convention in Nicaragua told the United Methodist leaders that Nicaraguan Protestants enjoy complete religious freedom “I am the leader of a major Protestant group in Nicaragua and I repeat that I am not under persecution” said Tellez But Hassan who says he suffered intimidation and harassment at the hands of the Sandinista authorities told a different story at the forum which also included UMC missionaries posted in Nicaragua the Rev Howard Heiner and the Rev Lyda Pierce Hassan described a Nicaragua where evangelicals are hounded by the government where evangelical literature and Bibles are confiscated by the government and w'hcre evangelicals are told that “you are poisoning the children of Nicaragua because you are teaching them that God exists” JJince Hassan and his family fled to the United States last December his account of being arrested and mentally and physically abused by the Sandinistas has been widely publicized Mainstream Protestant mission leaders familiar with Nicaragua including Heiner and Pierce conceded that Nicaraguan officials confiscated copies of evangelical literature including a Campus Crusade tract entitled “The Four Spiritual Laws" Hassan challenged North American Christians who travel to Nicaragua on tours to delve more deeply into the religious fabric of the country where he suggested they would discover the kind of oppression he described Referring to Americans touring his homeland Hassan said “It’s easy for you to divert your eyes and pay attention to those who make the most noise” Hassan has insisted that he and his evangelical colleagues in Nicaragua have no political agenda and that they neither oppose nor support the Sandinista revolution But he also cautions that nothing can interfere with the evangelical mandate to “evangelize the nation” Southern Baptists report on missionary effort RICHMOND Va (AP) — The Southern Baptist overseas missionary force reached a record 3587 people with the appointment of 40 new missionaries They brought the number of missionaries added in 1985 to 378 1986 April 19 |
