States over 40 years old foretells the emergence of menopause as a significant health issue experts maintain To date the United States has not recognized the significance of the general aging of our society particularly as it affects women cording to Dr Philip M Sarrel sociate professor of obstetrics If 'J if acas- and gynecology at Yale's School of Medicine In contrast Sarrel said European countries are a full decade or more ahead of Americans in research into menopause "We're way behind because we arc a country" Sarrel said during a recent interview "For example the Danish attitude is that 50 is the beginning of the best time of your life These are countries which are socialized and have national programs for reas tirement They look at an important time to be well" Sarrel said cities have clinics than there more menopause are in all of the United States according to Dr Isaac Schiff who works at the menopause clinic at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston which is affiliated with Many European Harvard Medical School "Menopause will become important to society in the coming years 636 million nearly half of of 1375 million The 1960 Census showed 334 million women over 40 about of the total of 91 million to the total jump NEW t if I h f females Philip M Sarrel the general aging in our society" Schiff said In addition to the Yale and Harvard clinics other leading menopause clinics exist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Qeveland the University of Florida at Gainesv ille and the University of California at Los Angeles Sarrel said According to Census Bureau statistics the number of women over 40 in 1980 was 477 million or about 40 percent of a total of II 65 million females By the year 2000 of the bureau predicts the projected number of women over 40 will Aging Sarrel said he hopes his findings will show that the change in the nervous system that occurs at the time of menopause can be reversed The average age at which women undergo menopause is 51 Sarrel said Sarrel defines menopause as the time of the last menstrual flow when "the capacity for the eggs to develop for reproduction is shifting and the ovaries are taking on new functions" It's also the time when a woman produces a low level of the hormone estrogen from her ovaries and a high level of pi- tuitary hormone Menopause's symptoms can because 'Insitute of in- clude hot flashes memory loss deheadaches and irritability pression drying of vaginal tissues caused by a drop in the estrogen level he explained Sarrel said men also undergo some sexual changes as they age but doctors have done little research in the area There is no name for the change and Sarrel said the phrase "male menopause" is not accurate Sarrel opened his clinic last October after studying menopause at a clinic he helped open at Oxford University in England in 1975 He plans to study 120 women over two years under a $500000 research grant from the National OLD WEST DAYS SALE Some women feel a change in their sense of touch Sarrel said a violinist almost lost her job " cause she could not feel the violin to play it But with hormone treatment she regained her sense of touch and kept her job RoomPer NightDoubl Ppt ONLY Dr Richard L Sprott associate director for biomedical research and clinical medicine at the National Institute of Aging in Bethcs-d- a Md said "the reason we think menopause is an issue worth supporting is because it's a major event for aging women and there are a number of changes which take place during and shortly after menopause that have significant consequences" Sarrel gave several examples of women undergoing menopause In a severe case he said a woman who suffers from a memory loss might become afraid of leaving her home "She'll go to the supermarket and doesn't feel that she can go through the aisles She panics and walks out This fear becomes exaggerated to the point where she won't leave the house" Sarrel said $49 up to 2 FREE Children room in Occupancy Government gives nod for estrogen use WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration reversing a decade-olposition said Friday that daily estrogen tablets taken after menopause are an effective means of slowing or preventing the bone deterioration called osteoporosis The FDA published a formal notice in the Federal Register declaring that the agency "now considers these drugs to be effective for the treatment of osteoporosis" a bone loss that can deform or cripple older women However it said estrogen therapy should be accompanied by traditional preventive diet and extherapy including a ercise And the agency said the therapy was safest for women who had undergone a hysterectomy That is because estrogen has been shown to substantially increase the risk of cancer of the womb when taken over a long period pling for elderly women The principle treatment is prevention through exercise which can increase bone density and a diet rich in calcium The FDA said taking estrogen after menopause "seems to slow down the bone loss but there is not enough evidence to show that it prevents bone from breaking" It said estrogen tablets should be used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy The new finding reverses a 1976 agency ruling that substantial evidence was lacking of estrogen's effectiveness against the bone disorder The 1976 finding followed a boom in estrogen use in the late 1960s and early 1970s based on a theory that the hormone was virtually a fountain of youth for women The boom hit a shock in 1975 however when researchers reported the increased risk of endometrial cancer 400 East Snow King Ave DOESN'T PO Box NeASp'ipers PHILADELPHIA — Last year at least 14 Philadelphia women were charged with killing husbands or lovers who the women said had physically abused them Although the women maintained that they were try ing to protect or defend themselves that argument made no difference as their cases first came before the law The women were arrested and booked just like any other suspect in a slaying they were held in jail until bail was set Although the amount of bail was low in some cases most of the women had to struggle to raise it leaning on relatives and friends for the cash Most waited in jail for several weeks until bail could be met In the meantime their already traumatized children were deprived of their mothers and in their homes many cases women's advocates say Last week a group of active feminists joined Philadelphia-aretogether to literally bail such women out The feminists conducted a event for a project called the Women's Bail Fund which they believe is the first of its kind in the United States More than $2000 was raised The fund works by providing bail money for needy Philadelphia women who have been accused of killing husbands or lovers and who have a documented history of being abused The amount needed to meet bail is often small SKI Jackson Hole WY PAYWIJ aids abused women Bail fund Knight women who have had a hysterectomy do not face that risk Osteoporosis is a gradual deterioration of the bone structure that begins after the age of 40 in both men and women The National Institutes of Health has estimated that between 15 million and 20 million people are affected by the disorder and that some 13 million bone fractures each year are caused by the condition While osteoporosis afflicts both sexes women are particularly affected and the loss of bone density sometimes becomes severe after menopause In extreme cases bones can become so fragile that they break under almost no stress The most commonly affected bones are the spine arms and upper legs Breaking of the small vertebrae can result in the disfiguring hunch known as dowager's hump while breaks in the hip can lead to permanent crip DO! j iMiiijmm But for some jailed women who cannot raise even $100 in cash the presentation of $1000 to meet bail is "incredible news" said Sue Osthoff Osthoff said that women jailed after killing their husbands or lovers are usually women without any prior criminal history who are "scared" and "confused" "Someone who — in spite of the beatings — they loved is dead" she said "I've seen women in shock for long periods of time over that And they (also) feel that they didn't do anything purposefully Most of these women did not try to kill" They have trouble understanding she said why "they are getting punished for being beaten up" Comparable worth pay plan OK'd TACOMA Wash (AP) — A federal judge on Friday approved a landmark $482 million compa- April 25
