Show 1 THE SENIOR CITIZENS Natural parents and foster parents unite to provide Indian children the best in education. Indian placement program outlined The time is swiftly coming when we of Utah, along with the people of most of the Western States, Georgia, and Western Canada, will see several buses drive into our communities filled with Indian students between the ages of 8 and 19. Many of us know some of these youngsters, because they have been among us before for others, this will be the first time they will have been away from the Indian Reservations and their own families. What are they doing here? Do we need to circle the wagons?" Not this time. They are part of over 5,000 American Indian Students that are members of the LDS Indian Student Placement Program, under direction of the Unified Social Services of the LDS Church. This Program had its beginning nearly 22 years ago in a frozen sugar beet field in Sevier County. It was there and then that 16 year old Helen John, a Navajo girl, asked the farmer for whom she and her family worked if she could put up her tent in their back yard and go to school to get an education. Elder Spencer W. Kimball, a member of the Council of Twelve, became informed of the situation. He has always had a deep love and concern for the Indian or (according to Church terminology) He asked the Golden Buchanan family of Richfield, Utah, if they would take this girl into their home, ...not as a mere guest, nor as a servant, although, of course, she would be expected to assume such responsibilities of service as all children ought to have and share, but that she may enter the home as a welcomed member of the household to enjoy the spiritual and cultural atmosphere of the home and to be given such schooling in the public schools as may be afforded to her. That was the beginning, and during the coming school year, there will be over 5,000 good LDS families who will volunteer for and accept this same calling. The full renumeration that they will receive will consist of the deep appreciation that these children will eventually feel for them, plus the heartwarming satisfaction that they have shared part of their life in order to give strength to another. Families who may be desirous of participating in this program, or anyon' who has questions concerning it are asked i contact Lamar Losser, 465- - 2790, of i!... of Nebo Stake; Blain C. The bus will leave the Tabernacle at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge for admission to the pageant, which will be on the grounds presented at the LDS temple. Bus fare will be $2. A seating section will be reserved for those going from Payson. For reservations, call Shirley Hardman or Stanley Wilson. Those attending should take along a sweater. Due to the fact that Nebo Stake Senior Citizen Day is scheduled for July 17, the next party at the Tabernacle will be postponed to July 31st at 2 p.m. Stanley Wilson, director of Senior Citizens in Payson, had been notified that: The age for citizens to join the Senior Citizens is now age 50 years. This will enable more people to enjoy the facilities at the Tabernacle such as ceramics, oil painting, rug weaving, travelogues, Bingo games, etc., as well as banquets, bus trips and all of the national citizens programs. The lowering of the age to 50 is in keeping with the national citizens program. Mr. Wilson and his wife, Gladys, became acquainted with this new ruling and other facts when they attended a seminar on the Division on Aging at Utah State University in Logan last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
