Show THE PAYSON Throws hat in race CHRONICLE Thursday, March 12, 1970 Richard Richards today announced that he will be a candidate for Congress in Jtv Central Ut. project President Nixons budget which was sent to Congress on February 2 contained a substantial increase in appropriations for the Central Utah Project. The budget, if ' approved by Congress, will enable the construction program of the Bonneville Unit to be accelerated significantly. It will also permit the beginning of construction of several new features, reported Palmer B. DeLong, Bureau of Reclamations Project Manager at Provo. The Presidents budget provides about $13 million for the Bonneville Unit for fiscal year 1971 which begins next July. About 30 percent of this amount or nearly $4 million will be spent for local payrolls in Utah and the remaining 70 percent or $9 million will be for materials and equipment. The requested funds, stated Mr. DeLong, will provide for the start of construction of two major dams and reservoirs in the Bonneville Unit: Soldier Creek Dam and Strawberry Reservoir Enlargement and Currant Creek Dam and Reservoir. Soldier Creek Dam is to be constructed on Strawberry River about 7 miles downstream from the existing Strawberry Dam which it will replace. The dam will be 242 feet high, 1190 feet long, and will contain more than 3 million cubic yards of fill material. Estimated time for construction of the dam is 3 years. Strawberry Reservoir will be increased to 870,000 acre-fe- et which is about 3 times its present capacity. The water level of the reservoir will be raised about 30 feet above its present level. Currant Creek Dam, located about 13 miles northwest from the crossing of Currant Creek and Highway 40, will be 130 feet high and 1,465 feet long. The resulting Currant Creek Reservoir will have a capaand will serve for city of 15,500 acre-fe- et storage and regulation, along Strawberry Aqueduct. The water level of the reservoir will fluctuate less than 4 feet annually. Because of this, Currant Creek Reservoir located in one of Utahs most scenic areas will be ideal for recreational and fish and wildlife development. Water Hollow Tunnel, northeast of Strawberry Reservoir, will be completed including the concrete lining and the open channel leading into Strawberry Reservoir. Construction is planned to begin on the next three tunnels eastward along the Strawberry Aqueduct with their appurtenant diversion dams and pipelines. The Layout, Currant, and Vat Tunnels have a combined length of 12.4 miles and will probably be drilled with a mechanical mole to a diameter of about 13 feet. Work is also scheduled to begin on the relocation of Highway 40 east of Strawberry Reservoir, and extension of the Currant Creek Access Road. Starvation Complex, including Starvation Dam and Reservoir, Knight Diversion Dam, Starvation Conduit and Tunnel and Highway 40 relocation with its Starvation Bridge are essentially complete. However, money is included in the budget for clean-u- p work around these facilities. Municipal and industrial water from the Bonneville Unit will be conveyed in Artist's concept of Soldier Creek Dam and Strawberry Reservoir Enlargement, Bonneville Unit. s Sfc. j a , ?7 - v k v -f "NT" 5,"-.;'- -' V-oJ' V Ssi r .t :.n . a .- -- ' ' ,.iy J :.. s.vr' . We had a bad decade in the 60s and if we fail to find solutions to our problems right away there is cause for great concern about the future. In 1968 the voters elected Richard Nixon President with the hope and prayer that he would, in fact, bring the Country together. I believe they support him today and have faith in his capacity to solve our problems. But many of the Congressmen have played politics with the President, and, as a result many of his programs, are being thwarted. As a Congressman from Utah, I would be numbered among those who support President Nixon in his positive, and even courageous, programs to curb inflation, fight crime, violence, pornography, and the illegal sale of dangerous drugs; and in his programs to cleanup our environment," said Richards. As a candidate for Congress, I will travel the length and breadth of the district to talk with the voters, and more importantly, to listen to the voters. I intend to discuss with them candidly and forthrightly the problems and issues with which they are concerned, said Richards. Richards served for four years as the State Chairman of the Utah Republican Party. He is currently the Director of the Political Division of the Republican National Committee. further information contact your local Conservation Officer - Dale Gurley in Payson or Brent Christensen in Spring-vill- e.
