The governor had been informed at his (the governor's) prayer breakfast, by the Governor of Wyoming, of what Rubin had said in Laramie three weeks previously. He apparently was unconcerned. Neal Maxwell, Vice President, seemed not to be concerned when, three days before Rubin spoke here, I spoke with him and expressed my disapproval of university facilities being used to tear down what the owners of those facilities, the taxpayers, are trying to build. I would hope that the higher education commission will prevent revolutionaries from using public facilities in Utah to spout their hatred and treason hereafter. Third performance..It worked! The gun was loaded. One of my prop boys pulled the string just as Annie shot; the gull fell I partially recovered. Fourth performance.. All went well. You know before we got that seagull to perform as it should, I was about as mad at seagulls as my old grandpappy must have been with those dern crickets back in 49 or whenever it was. Then there were those late entrances because of stuck zippers. One of these times Im gonna outlaw zippers in musicals. Safety pins only will be used. First performance..Someone failed to load Annies rifle so on went the show Grove, and father were very thrifty people who above everything taught their children to save. This was partly because they admired the trait and partly because they were never able to accumulate any surplus. If anything, Mable was more of a thrifty nature than her folks and many people accused her of saving the first nickle she ever earned and still having it. Unlike her parents Mable didnt really have to be so watchful of things after she grew up. .She had good steady employment before she married and she married a fellow who was successful She had lovely possessions which she prized highly. But Mable couldnt seem to change her ways. She used her every day china and silver for Sunday too and saved her fine sets without the gull sequence, I died a little, thinking of all the time spent in planning and rigging. Second performance.. Big shot I decided to adjust the draw string just before Annie was to shoot.. Yes, you guessed it. In view of the fact that I survived all these shows, myboss, J.C. Henderson, suggested that I devote one column to the subject: Behind the Scenes of a Musical. If I were to tell all that goes on, it would be enough to make you bawl. Ill just take a section of Annie. A seagull plays an important part in first scene, second act. Annie is aboard a ship, docked in the New York Harbor. All the show people are hungry; theyve returned home from a European trip broke. She is to shoot a seagull out of the sky for eating purposes. Problem l..Its unlawful to shoot seagulls in Utah. I sent my boys out to find one that died of old age or something, no luck. We hunted for magpies, no luck. We got a crow but didnt have time to spray him white. Anyway by that time I had one made by stuffing a white sock with rags.
