Show 4 THE PAYSON CHRONICLE Pattern exchange Cultus club Thursday, March 12, 1970 Della McClellan, Payson, teaching specialist in Nebo School District, was guest speaker at a meeting of the Cultus Club held Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Nadine Brown. Mrs. McClellan illustrated her talk with colored photographic slides which showed students in elementary grades using machines for listening and watching and learning. She said young children are building a background of experiences, and through the use of films and recordings they can gain depth and breadth in education. Individual help in various studies can be had, freeing the teachers for other work and students can also use the machines for research in science, math, history, etc. We are living at a time of the greatest explosion of knowledge in the history of the world," Mrs. McClellan stated. She said jobs are becoming more complex and specialized study is necessary for a person to hold almost every kind of job. Education of the past, she said, was geared too much to the aquisition of knowledge. Now educators believe students must learn how to use this vast store of knowledge and they work to teach the student to hear, to see and do and then to retain the knowledge. About 45 of the knowledge learned in school remains with him into adulthood, she stated. Mrs. Dolly Nelson was program chairman and introduced the speaker as well as a member, Mrs. Gould Dixon, who played accordion selections including The Little Red School House, which led into Mrs. McClellans talk. Mrs. Wride gave the club collect. Jeannine Provstgaard Engagement news Mr. and Mrs. Jack C. Provstgaard are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jeannine to Mr. Kent P. Jensen, son of Mrs. Melba Jensen of Goshen, Utah. The bride-elegraduated from Payson High School afterwhich she attended two years of schooling at Brigham Young University. For the last two years she has been employed as a secretary for a law firm in Salt Lake City. Mr. Jensen is a graduate of Payson High School and is employed at Spanish Fork Packing Co. The bride and groom-ele- ct are both graduates of Payson Seminary. The wedding is set for April 18th in the Nebo Stake Center with a reception ct following. The Nebo Stake Relief Society held a quilt pattern exchange at the Stake Center recently. The quilting committee from each Ward brought several quilt patterns for exchange and the Nebo Stake made available 3 new patterns obtained from Mormon Handicraft. Over 50 women participated and each Ward in the Stake now has several new patterns to work with in their quilting department. Add onion and mushrooms. Cook until onion is tender. Stir in crumbs, parsley, salt and cheese. Cool mixture while rolling dough. Drain off any excess drippings. . Prepare the pie crust mix as directed on package label Roll dough into 2 rectangles, one 6x12 and a second 8x14 inches, trimming off excess pastry. Place the smaller rectangle on well buttered shallow baking pan leaving about 1 inch around edge. Moisten with the larger pastry rectangle. Press edges together; seal with tines of fork. Combine egg and milk; brush pastry with egg mixture. Make small pastry designs with remaining crust; moisten and attach to crust. Brush with egg mixture. Bake at 375 degrees until done, about 30 minutes. Cook 5 minutes. Slice and serve with sour cream, if desired. , ' ' Makes about 6 large servings. BEEF CORNWHEELS 12 lbs ground beef 12 cup cracker crumbs 13 finely chopped onion 23 cup milk 1 teaspoon salt pepper 18 tsp. thyme Combine the above ingredients. Roll or pat out on waxed paper into 12 in. square and add filling. 1 18 tsp. FILLING 1 can (12 oz) whole kernel corn (well drained) 12 cup Cheddar cheese (grated) tasp. chopped pimento 14 cup catsup Combine the above mixture and spread over the meat mixture and roll as a jelly roll sealing edges. Place on a rack in an open roasting pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Brush catsup over loaf and continue baking 30 minutes more. Harold Hurst, last years District 5 President, presented awards. Jones Koyle of the Palace Riders, was presented a trophy for high point man in the District. LuDean Haskell of the Wakara Riding club and Jean Barton of the Hobble Creek Riding Club, tied for the high point Woman trophy. Congratulations to these people. The Wakaras held an auction at Intermission. The guests got in on some good bargains. There was a nice crowd and a good time was had by all Thanks Carol and Jim and all the Wakara members that helped to make the dance to be a big success. The club was held at the home of Mrs. Milan Jacobson Thursday night. Mrs. Watson Lafferty, president conducted the meeting. Mrs. Franklin Tervort gave the Club Collect. Mrs. Elbert Barnett led the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Several items of business were discussed and approved by voting. Mrs. George LeFevre introduced Mrs. Karla Gabert and her husband Patrick Gabert, who are majoring in music at the BYU and who had arranged for the proMr. Gabert gram for Mrs. LeFevre. introduced Bro. Curtis who has charge of the opera department at the Y. Bro. Curtis set the stage for the musical numbers followed by discussing the opera, its beginning with the Greeks and how it has developed through the years. The first operas were presented by talking to cords played on the piano, but as drama does not project the voice it was set to music to make it more audible. Opera was promoted by the nobility who had the time to work at it and could afford the staging, mostly for their own amusement. Bro. Curtis told us that to really enjoy opera one must study the script and know what the story is about. He sang two numbers from the opera LaBoheme, Lucy Ann Wallace and Sally Murray, music students, presented a scene from the opera, Aida giving a brief synopsis before they sang. Pat Harrison was the ' ' accompanist.
