PLEASE BE ON TIME! EDITORIALS Frank Cole, MD, in an editorial in the Nebraska State Medical journal: We once studied all deaths on a surgiar cal service during a period, to see when patients died. We thought the night might be dangerous, since the nurse and laboratory staff was smaller, were closed, and all the doctors were home, but this was not so. We tried weekends and winter months, but nothing came of these. Then we divided the day into three periods, and succeeded only when we had rotated the days divisions ' centering on 4 p.m., midnight, and 8 a.m. was 2 12 times greater , The death rate at 4 p.m, than all during the day. 10-ye- ay Why is this? Thats when others we have visitors. They infection and dirt, they stop all nurses work, they plague her with foolish questions, they block the elevators, they annoy the patient. They used to bring food and they once slept in the hospital, but we have stopped that. They come from a sense of duty, and we think the patient receives them with equal reluctance. They sit on beds and tell the helpless patient counterpart. It is clean nearly to the point of sterility, and it is a model of efficiency. Its work cannot be interrupted several times a day by hordes of silly, contaminated visitors who come and from a sense of who serve only to keep the patient from getting well. If there must be visiting, let it be done after the patient gets home. its C. Rollin Hanlon, MD, new director of the American Cdllege of Surgeons, discussing Medicare with Arthur Snider of the Chicago Daily News: "I simply cant understand how you can pass a law that provides services for a segment of the population and then express dismay or shock because the people who are to provide that service have an increase in income. Free advertising is not news item ' One of the most difficult problems of the editor is to explain to some businessmen the difference between free advertising and news. The owner of a small speciality shop who said she didntbelieve in advertising always made a point of sending the local newspaper a notice of her buying trips to New York. She was incensed when they i were not printed. Does this mean that just because I dont advertise in your paper my name has been ' blacklisted? The editor attempted to explain that the stories on the repeated buying trips were It is simply a method ; free advertising. ; of informing people that you are acquiring new stock and personally making the selec- tions. Elmo Keck, former teacher of music at Payson High School, and who has now moved back to Payson (though teaching at Spanish Fork High) displayed his talents as a vocalist in the part of Sam Harris. The 15 piece orchestra also included Monte Taylor, clarinet; Alma Willey, bass fiddle; Ferrel Huff, formerly of Payson, now of Springville, who plays bass horn; and Bud Huchins, Lehi, all faithful for many years to the Sunday night band concerts in Paysons Memorial Park. Ellen Willey, Almas wife, was also a member of the orchestra, playing cello. Mercedes Bjarnson, Payson, who is and member of the board, Utah Valley Opera Company, also sang a vocal number in the musical play, aptly portraying Ma Templeton. These stories probably helped your business indirectly. That we dont object to. They werent designed simply to promote your store. The editor could have pointed out that often the line between free advertising and news is too fine to split. When a local business, for instance, is undergoing a major overhaul which will affect the appearance and perhaps the trade of the community, a news story about the change is justified. It would be justified free advertising. On the other hand the retailer would be not to back the foolish and short-sightnews story with more details in legitimate advertising, which would not be applicable to the news section. Oberg EDITOR Technician Seaman Gary USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard A. Oberg of 619 N. 600 E, Payson, Utah, is serving aboard the guided missile light cruiser USS Galveston in San Diego, Calif. Electronics D. My heart has ached for the Levanger family since that tragic event a month ago. I have a daughter the same age as Ann. Im sure this crime was not planned but circumstances brought the two people together, one needing help and the other with a sick mind who saw his opportunity and took advantage of it and committed the most heinous crime known to man. Theres not one of us who wouldnt have tried to prevent this tragedy if we could as we think now. My deep concern is: Would we do something to prevent another such tragic happening? You ask, What could I have done? or What can I do now? There is something that you and all of us can and must do or this will .happen again and again. It is you and I that have set the stage, it is you and I. that have allowed our society to morally degenerate and provide excellent training of the sex criminal.-Don- t we condone the showing of many filthy, obscene movies in our communities, pronographic literature is readily available. Each time we buy a ticket to a questionable movie, every time we buy a suggestive magazine, we encourage and enhance the business. We want to depend on the government to pass laws to protect us from our own follies, but effective laws are difficult to pass and more difficult to enforce. The answer is: If we would not attend these movies, if we would not buy the questionable literature, if we would not off-col- or view the vulgar and obscene TV programs, the market would soon vanish. Its as simple as that and as effective. Its an individual responsibility. Each of us can and must raise our standards and crush this devastating trend. D. La Roll Johnson, chairman Utah County Council for Better Movies and Literature. fects. Elder Reece Murdock returned home from his mission in the Eastern States last week. Try these stabilizing words and see eyes light up in sweet humility and love for you: I love you I am so proud of you thank you dear, you are such a fine i daughter (or son) thank you for your wonderful ideals and your beautiful attitude hurry home my dear one. Ill be missing you I love you, my dear Mate, for all the wdm- - -derful things you do for me it is so good to know I have you to love and cherish me thank you for setting sweet example in such a humble manner for each one of us. Oh, you know the words your beloveds yearn to hear. Do they ever truly hear them expressed? Some time it maybetoo late to really tell them. Remember all couples enjoy being needed and appreciated and cherished, and a child truly grows and thrives on love in all forms. Teenagers are often lost and confused at the hard demands on them they come home hoping tobe able to hear a word of love and understanding from you their parent. Dont let them go 1 . to bed confused. A home of love is a basis of righteousness; it becomes a blessing of united effort and caring, and lovely compassion- ate service. A child will try harder to succeed if you are lifting him and loving him even when he is not the top in the class. The Lord tells us to save souls those ' in your family are the most important to you, you know. You have plenty of love to give for it multiplies as you give it away and yes, it is a gift of God and He has never set the amount you can use. Love is not like any other commodity it never does bring evil, it grows no matter how much you use of it, and it shines the brighter with an : increasing glow, even the older and wiser the loving words and attitudes. ; Mahy people store this fine and beautiful , r, into deep recesses of their homes, and minds, with a Ill use it someday."
