Act according to buyers market t Today economists in the Nixon adminisboth about creeping inflation and the possibility of the first recession in ten years. Perhaps they should give some attention to a statement made by the President himself twelve years ago. Then Vice President Nixon said: American business must recognize that this is a buyers market and act accordingly. New products, increased advertising, lower prices, can have a dramatic effect on consumer psychology. The people who have most at stake in the survival of our free economy should be betting on its growth... At that time American business took up with the development of new products. Betting was done with dramatically increased advertising from industrial to retail levels. tration are worried Betting on the health of the economy through advertising involves more than maintaining advertising at present levels. It means increasing advertising costs at a faster rate than other production costs. The sense of this statement has been demonstrated in all fast developing in West Germany and Japan. Japan, which has rapidly become a modern consumer nation in every respect, could not have attained its growth or sustained its productive energy without greatly changing the consumer wants of the Japanese people through advertising. It is the aspirations of the people themselves which result in greater productive capacity. To refine these aspirations is the ultimate service of advertising to a nation.
