I lived in a relatively shady yard and when my girlfriends played house or, hopscotch, baseball or many of the childhood games we found amusing it was usually easy to find a shady nookwhere we could spend the time. N At the beginning of the real summer heat if I had gone to a friends house to play and they happened to have a very treeless yard and we had played in the sun I very often was sent home, incase of having the measles. For the first few seasons that this happened I was kept in the house and . isolated by my careful mother to be sure that others didnt catch the measles. But after this had gone on and I hadnt ended up getting measles on any of the occasions, it dawned on my mother that something else was causing the trouble. When I was sent home the next time my mother took me to the family doctor who made a quick diagIt was nosis, the rash I had was then that he told my mother and I that I must not get out in the sun any more than necessary unless I was protected from the suns rays. In those days most (if not all) sweaters were made of wool and I found that they gave me as bad a rash as the sun. I learned from sad experience that the easiest thing was to stay inside and enjoy myself with books and the piano and playing paper dolls, but as I grew older there were times when friends would persuade me to ride bikes, play ball, and various other activities, but I limited myself on all of them. A few times I did go in bathing, but on two such occasions I was so blistered I ended up never learning to swim and also hating water. The thoughts of donning a bathing suit made my shoulders cringe. Needless to say I am not the outdoor type of person. At times I have been deter- -' mined to do yard work or other outdoor ' work but if I know that I am going to be out very long I must see that my skin is covered up. This means not only hat, but long sleeved shirt, long jeans, scarf around my throat and gloves besides making sure that I do not face the sun and expose my face. Most people would just rub on some sun lotion and forget it, but I am also sensitive to many lotions, salves etc. so I dont take chances with them. By the time I don all of those clothes though I usually am so hot that I fear a sunstroke so it is just easier to shun the sun. I know that I have missed many activities and experiences by not being able to tolerate the sun and the past few years I have on many occasions even gotten sunIj burned in our car on vacations. Recently Jn a mountain resort area I sat in the sun just long enough to eat a noonday lunch and my arms from the spot where my three quarter length sleeve ended and my face and neck were sunburned. Some people worship the sun. Others love to frolic in it and tan a nice bronze but I 'keep out of its way as much as possible. I think that if somebody with hot blood so much as breathed on me Id be apt to end up sunburned. This has been an unusually hot and sunny summer, one of those thats nice for, brunettes PRINTING Parley P.
