He is a maestro who has defied being typed as a conductor of a single kind of music -- - classic, choral, patriotic, jazz, popular, folk or novelty tunes. Waring presents them all in his shows, updating the old favorite in the popular rhythms of the day. All this began in the most modest way a four man band consisting of Tom Waring at the piano, Fred Waring and Freddie Buck on banjos, and Poley McClintock on the drums, where he is stiU holding forth a later. During Freds student days at Penn State College, the young group increased in numbers and changed the name to the Pennsylvanians. College date followed college date and before long the Waring orchestra was the most sought after group by the countrys colleges for their Junior Proms, etc. Their success attracted the attention of the bookers for the nations presentation theatres, and The Pennsylvanians were engaged for their first theatrical engagement at Kunskys Madison Theatre in Detroit where War-ininventive staging created a sensation. The demand for their services brought bookings at the countrys greatest theatres and was climaxed by a long engagement at that mecca of all half-centu- ry gs Carrots, Fruit Salad on French Bread Butter, Prune Cake - Iced, 12 pt. Expanding their horizons, Fred and The Pennsylvanians appeared in the broadway musicals, 'Hello, Yourself," and 'The New Yorkers," followed by an engagement in Paris at Des Ambassa-deur- s, and then a trip to Hollywood for the first film, 'Syncopation." 9 February 27, 1969 of extreme weather conditions. Waring and The Pennsylvanians began the fabulous radio career which brought their famed music to millions instead of the thousands heretofore. The popularity achieved in their radio appearances soon created an unprecedented demand for the Waring orchestral and choral music arrangements, and Fred established the Shawnee Press which now lists more than 8,000 publications in its catalogue. In like manner, audience reaction brought into being the Waring Workshop, where every summer for more than twenty years, thousands of teachers, students and vacationers have learned Warings choral techniques from Fred and some of Americas most distinguished musicologists. With the advent of television, Fred and The Pennsylvanians entertained viewers for seven years under the sponsorship of General Electric. Then Fred a produced 'Hear! Hear!," showcase for American music which opened at New Yorks Ziegfield Theatre, then toured the major cities of the nation. Thus began the resumption of the Pennsylvanians annual concert tours, which bethe fall and conclude the in gin following spring, after which The Pennsylvanians return to Freds Shawnee Inn and CounClub at try Shawnee-On-Del-ewa- Pa., his sort and Construction Work Continuing on Water Hollow Tunnel at Strawberry Reservior Winter has truly arrived in Strawberry Valley. A solid blanket of white snow covers the whole valley. Even the Strawberry Reservoir, the scene of so much fishing and boating activity during the summer, is frozen and covered with snow. The abundant wildlife has either hybernated or migrated leaving the once green valley almost a deserted white wonderland. The only noticeable activity, other than some traffic on Highway 40, is the construction work on the Water Hollow Tunnel in the northeast part of the valley. Construction in the tunnel is proceeding in spite of temperatures of 30 degrees below zero and snow more than 5 feet deep with drifts up to 12 feet in Strawberry Valley, reported Palmer B. DeLong, Manager of the Bureau of Reclamations Central Utah Projects Office in Provo. Normally all construction work is suspended during the long winter seasons at such high elevations. re, re- 600-ac- re in the golfers eden Pocono Mountains, near the of all the Waring enter- center prises. Tickets are now on sale at Valley Music Hall Box Office in North Salt Lake and may be charged at all Sears, Castleton, ZCMI, WDM 1 - K.O.B. Drilling of the tunnel began last fall at the outlet portal. A huge 80-tmechanical mole lf has chewed its way about mile into the mountain leaving a hole 13 feet in diameter. The mole is kept on course by a ruby laser beam. In operation the mole averages about 10 feet per hour. The severe winter weather does not hinder the work inside the tunnel because temperatures there stay at about 50 degrees the year around. Solid rock is ground by the mole into small bits which are loaded into muck cars by a conveyor belt. A small locomotive pulls the muck cars out of the tunnel and over Highway 40 to be dumped in the Strawberry Reservoir Basin. A shed was constructed last fall over part of the railroad tracks from the tunnel to the highway to protect the tracks from snowdrifts and permit continued operation. Train operators notice and prepare for the extreme changes from inside to outside the tunnel by donning protective clothing. The bid to drill the 4.1 mile long tunnel was awarded to Boyles Bros. Drilling Company and Gibbons and Reed Construction Company both of Salt Lake City for $5,594,828. Following the drilling, the tunnel will receive a concrete lining and Is scheduled to be completed by June 1971. The Water Hollow Tunnel is the first leg to be constructed of the 37 mile long Strawberry Aqueduct. Strawberry Reservoir will be increased about three times its present capacity to accommodate additional water diverted by Strawberry Aqueduct. This water is to be used along the Wasatch Front where additional water will be required to sustain the accelerated population growth and industrial development. on TIMID one-ha- Ini at HYDROSTATICIIQPEW MOUSE The one on the left dries a load for 5L International Hydrostatic 544 Tractor given to some lucky farmer free of charge Come in and see it and register for the drawing.
