Show A Salute to the New Year of School LETTERS -- Tbfc View From Herer by Ruth Rothe EDITOR Payson, Utah Sept. 1, 1967 , Payson Chronicle Dear Editor: While reading the Provo In our modern society we .often hear the comment that certain people or groups cant communicate. If you think about it youll see that most every day you see real evidence of this. If youre a parent and have any children living within a hundred miles of you, youll have to admit that some time either recently, or a short while lback, at least one of you has, 'made the classic statement to the other one, You just dont UNDERSTAND! Or perhaps it was your husband or wife as the case might be who is always lamenting, cant you see it my way? There are various ways to say it, but in reality they are only wishing that the two of you could see the same problem or situation in the same way. I had this brought home to me recently when I visited some friends in a near-b- y county. She has always been enthusiastic about the vacations she and her family take each summer. She is forever exclaiming with delight how much fun it is to rough it. I have always gone by the dictionary definition when -speaking of the saia, roughing Why it, Happiness Is Flameless Electric Heat. Millions Enjoy It! Electric heat is tomorrows way for total comfort in your home. Special law Rat.. Owners of Total Electric homes receive a special low rate for electricity. Over 3 million U. S. homes and apartments are now heated flamelessly. The Federal Power Commission forecasts 19 million electrically heated U. S. homes by 1980. More and more homeowners agree: For all the good things in your home, only electric heat is good enough. Convert to Electric Heat. New developments make it so much easier now to change your homes heating to electric. Youll be surprised how little electric heat costs too. and wanted . no-- jt it. My dictionary still ays it is To live under r ugh, hard, or impoverished conditions. To camp out or travel in a rough manner. I have seen the time on our vacations when staying at a modern carpeted, motel apartment was "roughing it enough for me. So, when my friend starts her line about the benefits of the out of doors, the crisp mountain air on a summer morning, the beauties of nature and such lovely phrases, I have often felt that perhaps I was being catty or snooty, or something, in not showing more enthusiasm. But Ive never liked camping even for a day very much. Of course when Ive thought of roughing it Ive thought of it the way we did it as a family when I was growing up. This has brought to my mind visions of the family putting boxes of food, pans, etc. some bedding and a tent in the car and going for a little trip up the canyon or somewhere and camping out for a day or two. My family used to enjoy these occasions and often another iasm of my brother and sisters I always spoke ahead of time to sleep in the back seat of the car and by taking plenty of books I somehow got through the ordeal by leaving the car only at meal times. My friend used to invite us !to go along with them on their Wings but since my husband doesnt share her enthusiasm for outdoor living any more than I do weve always been able to find some important reason why we just couldnt possibly go. After her wonderful trip to Moon Lake last year my friend came to visit us for an evening and during the converstaion SIX MONTHS USED SINGER Z1G ZAG 4 Singer Automatic zig rag. Iam in full accord with the views of this tourist from Connecticut. In fact, just last month we took a friend from Maine and a family from Salt Lake City up to Maple Bench for a picnic supper, and found a horrible mess there. Before we could have our picnic we had to pick up a tremendous amount of beer bottles and cans from the area near the picnic table. Its no fun to clean up after thoughtless LitterBugs, and It did not make a good impression on our friends from elsewhere. Maple Bench could be a lovely picnic and camping spot, but not when it is strewn with litter. Is it possible that this littering is being done by rebelling teenagers of the area, or are these LitterBugs a little older:? rs At any rate, would the Beer-buste- of Payson area PLEASE TAKE MORE PRIDE IN OURCANYON. Letskeepthe litter in TRASH CANS where it belongs. Our Payson Canyon and picnic spots reflect on Payson and Lets take pride in them and keep them clean. Sincerely yours, sShirley Shepard (Mrs. W. M.) This is the letter that appeared in the Provo Herald Thursday August 31: Editor Hearld : Weve been tent camping from Denver to UintaNational Forest during the last five days and until we camped at Maple Bench we have been pleased by the cleanliness. This campsite and the road approaching it from Payson, however, are littered with thousands of beer cans, broken bottles, and all other forms of litter. This is a disgrace to the local residents, who evidently are misusing a picnic area placed there by a national agency for the enjoyment of all. A little more local pride would certainly seem to be in order. WALTER D. TEMPLE JR. 211 Totoket'Eoad Branford, Conn. 06405 started to explain that the trip had been the best yet because they had bought some new equipment. She didnt get to tell us more about it because we had more friends drop in right then and the conversation never did get back to the subject. I thought about it the next day though and decided that perhaps she had bought a new camp stove or a bigger frying pan or some such small item and secretly thanked my lucky stars once more, that I hadnt married a enthusiast. camping-oWe stopped in at her place the other day to offer the use of a time and campfire blackened dutch oven that my mother used to prize. We left it in the car to bring out as a surprise as we departed, and went in to visit. They were preparing for this years vacation and could hardly wait to show us their gear out in their patio area. Im sure I showed utter astonishment to say the least. First we saw the nearly new truck and camper unit, pick-u- p complete with stove, refrigerator, beds and most of the comforts of home. Even an intercom unit so that the children and parents can talk to each other from the camper to the truck cab. Then this year they had also rented a small, completely equipped trailer. I was glad wed left the dutch oven in the car, I could very well have insulted them with such an offering! But my conclusion is that my friend and I were definitely not communicating. Either that, or Webster and I are old fashioned. Because if thats roughing it I think Ill accept the next invitation my friend sends our Payson, Utah Do you Dear Reader find this business of making ends meet in your budgeting a dif- ficult task? Only a few years ago I nude the statement that if I could bring just such and such amount of money into my home each month, I could get by ven well and even save a small amount. We are now making over twice that amount and we still aren't putting much aw a lor a rainy day. The summer months draw to a close and we have a feeling that this is the year we get on top, but as school starts we find our plans are shot fees school clothes etc. etc. etc. We just get over the staggering blow of this when along comes property tax time. We get this paid without a penalization and Christmas is upon us Christmas, that happy time that we pay installments on for the next year. Eh Gads! Is it income tax time already?
