The sedges (wiregrass) and rushes (broadleaves) were confined to the low, wet areas because the competition from the higher producing palat- s. low-yieldi- able species that were able to grow on the more favorable sites. A good balance of plant nutrients was maintained in d the soil as wild animals only a fraction of the Most yearly plant growth. of the nutrients were returned to the soil frofn the dead plant material as it decomposed. What few nutrients were removed were replaced by elements being released from parent material as it was formed tito soil. This balance that nature had worked out resulted in a population of plants. Mans first step to upset this balance was the introduction of livestock to graze these plants. Proper grazing management where some plant growth was allowed to develop in the fall to replenish root reserves would not have markedly affected this natural cycle. Not understanding the principals of plant growth, ranchers increased livestock hav-veste- 746 waste. The second major alternation of natures cycle was the introduction of irrigation water, both to the area involved and to surroundng areas. Water in was applied excessively many cases and this resulted in higher water tables, with reduced competition from the overgrazed palatable plants and environmental changes favorable to their growth, the sedges and rushes quickly expanded their areas of growth. The spread of this type of vegetation has resulted in reduced per acre yields of lower quality hay than was originally harvested. Lower soil temperature afid poor soil aeration which were also due to the excessive amounts of water reduced activity of soil organisms that aid in the decom-- , position of heavy mats of sod. This sod build-u- p along with salt accumulations has greatly complicated the renovation and reseeding problems. The continuation of this grazing practices for many years has continued to- - alter the plant composition of these meadows until at present there are tremendous were once dows of i h:gh-produci- areas pioduction. Many of our ranchers are now in the process of applying with the assistance of the S oil Conservation Service and other federal and state agencies techniques that have been developed through research. The results are outstanding, yields often exceeding all expectations. Research ih still finding answers to the plant-foorelationships. Plant breeders are providing new and better plants. Soil Conservation Service Plant Materialh Centers are evaluating the areas for these new plants. They are also developing improved seeding and cultural techniques to insure the establishment and high production which is essential to successful grassland farming. Future releases in this series will consider application of specific phases ef improvement for meadowlands. soil-wat- er d Our sweetest experiences of Un at Silver Springs, Fla., and affection are meant to point the isnt necessarily red. paint us to that realm which is the real and endless home of the heart. Plant foods that were formerly returned to the soil were taken from the meadows in the form of livestock products or redistributed and often concentrated in certan areas in the form of animal 3-- 4-- JOHNSON Business Opportunities 4-- 2-- Governor George Dewey Clyde (right), paying a visit to the Red Cross Intermountain Regional Blood Center, learned from Salt Lake County Red Cross Chapter Chairman George E.
