It GUNNISON BULLDOGS Iff liEUFJi: IS (UK ST WESTS (II K t Ad LTV AMI (H and uv'rt' sttUdly hchiud tin K GUNNISON BULLDOGS COUNCIL GUNNISON CITY Hilt Mayor liSTER RKH v PtDGE HESMANSEN ROSS FARThCIOMEW JENStH Co'jrd!fvcin r- 't rrrrv PEA) EKS Crcar Cornc iar Published March 22 1979 Gmmiscm Wins State Championship “The Bulldogs are No 1” was the chant of the fans as the Field House in Provo vibrated with excitement last Saturday night when the Gunnison Valley High School Bulldogs won the state championship 1A basketball tournament by defeating Milford a resoundmg67-5- The scrappy Bulldog squad was out to win from the starting buzzer and by the end of the first half there was no question of here they were going as Gunnison showed an impressive lead of 17 points With just one minute left in the first quaner Hill Nay Lund and Warren had all scored to set the Bulldogs The Tigers made their ahead only serious charge of the evening and scored six quick unanswered points but Gunnison took charge again and Warren Hill and Lund stretched the lead to There was littlechange of pace after the halftime break as the Bulldogs continued to dominate the ball Ken Jones superstar forthe Milford Tigers was effectively boxed in and every time he managed to get the ball he saw it snatched away from him Jones still made 32 points but most of them at the end of the game when the Bulldogs’ victory was assured Coach Hill said this was the finest team he has coached in his nine years at Gunnison “It is impossible to pick any one outstanding player They are superb” he said They proved their team work in the championship game Hill Mathews and Warren dominated both boards with Mathews taking 22 to 24 rebounds alone and with Lund and Nay setting the fast break in motion the Tigers found it impossible to Contain the Bulldogs All five of the Gunnison squad scored in double figures with Warren shooting seven field goals and free throws for 20 points Hill made 3 and Mathews points Lund 2 Nay IQ The team was met at the park as they came into town by a caravan of cars that stretched three miles long They were greeted at the high school by parents and fans who have followed the Bulldogs through their season play Coach Hill saw his team lose seven games at the beginning of the season and then go on to win a record 15 games without a loss and become both Region 8 champions and bring home the Class A state championship As an expretsion of the high esteem the valley has for Coach Hill and his wife Pauline abeautiful color TV was presented to them from the community "Coach Hill doesn’t just teach basketball” one parent remarked “He teaches boys the importance of working together and striving for excellence in whatever they do” Coach Hill and Pauline both pressed their heartfelt appreciation for the support of the townspeople Coach Hill said he had never seen such fan support for a ballteam cluding all the support from the businessmen who bought ads in the programs and made the purchase of new warmup suits and uniforms possible Coach Hill said he also wanted to mention the cheerleaders pep band and drill team “They’re some of the best we have ever had” he commented And to Boyd Goble who opened the tournament and the championship game by singing the National Anthem Coach Hill expressed his appreciation for the outstanding job he did Heexpressedaspecial appreciation to Coach Darrell Warren for his countless hours of work and to C oaeh Reed Roberts for his support “It’s a team effort all the way” said the jubilant coach Coach and Mrs Hill wanted the community to know' how much they appreciated the beautiful TV but said “just seeing all the people there was enough” In a quick of the three other games the Bulldogs defeated Tintic The Ti ntie coach said he would rather have met any other team up there the first game other than Gunnison On Thursday the Bulldogs defeated Dugway This was possibly the most frustrating game played at the tournament as Dugway ballgame until the played a Bulldogs took the lead and forced them to move On Friday Gunnison had little trouble with Wendover taking an early lead and w inning by 7 points Every player on theGunnison team was able to play at the tournament Coach HiM gave a lot of credit to the second string and said they were the toughest team the starting five had to play and did a great job in helping prepare the team for the championship Matthew Stewart was also commended for the outstanding job he did in filling every position when he was needed The tournament standings were as follow s: Gunnison First Milford Second North Sevier Third Dugway Fourth Beaver Fifth Wendover Sixth Kanab Sevenih and St Joseph Eighth CHVMPIONSHIP SCORE BOX 67 Millard Gunnison 50 KG FT TP Gunnison Nay 3 20 Warren 7 Hill Mathews 5 l und Reid 0 TOTAIS 25 67 Milford KG KT TP ilhams 4 041 2 Whnncy Jones II 32 8 Atkins 0 Myers 0 TOTALS N 50 C |
