Show ip Page 6 Pinata festival underway Thursday at Snow College First Security to insure GVH athletes activities For the seventh consecutive year First Security Bank has announced it will fund catastrophic insurance for Gunnison Valley High School students volved in sports or other activities The $200 donation will be presented to the school this fall during a sporting event In the 1900’s First Security has spent more than $1 million to provide catastrophic insurance coverage to all state high school students participating in Utah High School Activities Association - sanctioned events Sanctioned activities basketball cross country drill football gold swimming tennis track volleyball wrestling and other activities such as music speech and drama The insurance provides income soccer include baseball softball life in the event of a serious injury to a student “First Security Bank is to be commended for its support and willingness to fund such a vital program for our high school students” said Jerry Bovee associate director of the UHSAA “Unfortunately Utah had a serious sports and medical care for accident last year but this insurance proved invaluable in supporting the family involved Without First Security’s backing we would not be able to afford this costly program” First Security Corporation in the largest financial services organization headquartered in the Intermountain West Since its incorporation in 1928 the company has believed that success is not only measured by performance and profitability but also in the way it interacts with the communities it serves To that end First Security makes financial donations to various nonprofit causes and encourages the active involvement of its employees in the community large at The fourth annual Pinata Festival opens on Thursday December 4 at the Snow College Greenwood Student Center The festival is a major fundraiser for a range of children’s programs which impact children in Ephraim City and Sanpete County All proceeds of the festival fund programs such as Child Abuse Prevention Team and community recreation and education programs which serve children Admission to the event is free to the public This year pinatas have been decorated and or designed by such notable personalities as the Karl Malone Governor Leavitt’s staff Attorney General Jan Graham’s staff the KSL Anchor staff Bob Evans of 3 and Wayne Evans of Evans Group Advertising Additionally many school clubs companies families and individuals have contributed pinatas which will be sold on Friday and Saturday (December Sth and 6h) during festival events The festival is the brainchild of Ephraim City CouncilmanCliffBirrell and Snow College Literacy Coordina tor Paula Soderborg In the hustle and giving spirit of the holiday season the needs of rural children are frequently While there are many overlooked programs centered in the more populated areas the dollars rarely trickle This into these smaller communities year the communities Volunteer support accounts for most of the success of the festival Ephraim City donates $3000 for operation capital - used to purchase basic piflatas to be decorated facilities and other essentials Sponsors donate much of the advertising and also purchase piflatas which are passed on to schools used for family entertainment during the festival and displayed at local stores The festival schedule includes: Dec ' - Pinatas on display- - at the Snow College Greenwood Center Activities and entertainment for Snow College students that evening Silent Auction refreshDec 5 ments and entertainment-ti- t from 7 pm to 9 pm Pinatas will be on display all The Piflata board of directors feel that this is a very worthwhile and exciting event that can have a Wonderful effect on drawling communities and people together “The world may little note or remember simple acts of kindness but people do The Pinata Festival provides funding for programs which know no boundaries of culture race religion or ethnicity Pinatas are handmade authentic creations Entries from previous years have included “The Nutcracker a rocking horse Father Christballoons animals mas Garfield snowmen and many more This year some of the more unique creations include a long Noah’s ark a six foot high lamp post a grandfather clock a bam an angel fish The creations are so pretty that purchasers often choose to keep them as annual holiday decorations rather than break them open!
