Enjoy reading the headlines of the past Howard Nielson's Congressman and city office confirmed Wednesday morning that the Reagan Administration has approved Sevier County for flood relief At this point according the Nielson’s office the approval is for public assistance only Money has not yet been allocated for private assistance The floods have not ceased to do their damage in the North Sevier area: claiming farmlands structures animals and the irrigation water as their latest victims At least three major Utah Power and Light Company 345 Killovolt power lines were incapacitated by a slide in Goosebeny Valley One tower was completely knocked down and two others damaged The lines are connected with the Sigurd station Three miles west of the power lines fell on Jim Christensen’s land a major portion of pasture caved in leaving a mini canyon w hich has joined itself with Gooseberry Creek Mike Stubbs forester with Richfield Ranger District said the ground slumped because of the “super saturation of the soil caused by the excessive amount of moisture” He said the ground simply became too heavy and fell in The cave-iis about 50 feet deep 200 yards wide and about a half mile in length Stubbs said Ranger Dick Allred and Utah Power and Light workers were in the Gooseberry area all day Monday working on the power lines assessing the damages Although many farmers in the area have been hurt by the floods the Don Holt farm is one example of what the flooding has done to agriculture in the area The Sevier River runs just west of the Holt farm The Salina Creek runs in back of the Holt home on 400 North in Salina and to the side of the farm Mr Holt said at least 100 acres of his farmland and about 40 acres of the Joe Freece farm have been flooded beyond use for this year He said more than 30 tons of mud must be removed from his corrals before they can be used again Norma Holt said at least 16 mother cows have literally lost their baby calves probably to the flood currents Mr Holt said that 100 tons of hay and 30 tons of corn have been destroyed and that about 300 tons of silage are still under water Salina City officials Salina irrigation officials and area farmers converged at the diversion for the irrigation water when flooding waters of the Sal na Creek eroded the diversion wall Tuesday morning The wall which was built in 1936 Corps by the Civilian Conservation eroded to the point where creek waters would not divert into the bed which normally takes the water to the irrigation pond Allen Crane Salina said the pond would probably dry in a few days leaving Salina residents with no sprinkling water for aw hile The farmers officials devised a plan Tuesday to help the farmers get their needed irrigation water The plan called for the digging of a trench above the creek and laying pipes to divert water for the farmlands The problem according to one official was in finding equipment not being used already for other work to do the work needed on the irrigation project A Coca Cola truck fell through a bridge which spanned SR 24 near Sigurd early Monday morning By 7:15 am the truck was freed and the road was opened although traffic had to pass through on one lane Virtually all of the campgrounds and picnic areas in the forest have been flooded or are inaccessible because of w ashed out roads On the Fillmore District Oak Creek Maple Hollow Coplcy’sCove Buckskin Charlie Shingle Mill and Pistol Rock recreational areas were all closed as of June 9 Maple Grove was the only campground open at press time Gunnison Valiev News Page 1 June 9 1983 Evac Measures Taken for G Valley Area Moving slides in Twelve Mile Canyon and an unstable condition at the Gunnison Reservoir are the cause of planning for emergency evacuations of parts of Mayfield and Gunnison Authorities asked residents to be prepared to evacuate their homes within 15 minutes notice In Gunnison notification will be made by personal contact by someone authorized All residents north of the Sanpiteh River bridges are advised to go to the City Hall or Stake Center Residents south of the bridge should go to the Centerfield Church for further structions If an evacuation is necessary residents are advised to bring one extra set of clothes sleeping bags or quilts pillows and flashlights any quick food items that are handy and any medications that arc required The Mayfield evacuation plan calls for residents to be transported to Manti Sanpete County Emergency Services Director Wally Buchanan stated that there are two slides in Twelve Mile Canyon one coming from the south and one from the north that are coming together at the same point There is the potential danger of a 40 to 80 foot dam being formed cutting of Twelve Mile creek Geologists moving approximately four feet a day The south slide can only be surveyed by air Neil Nielson president of the Gunnison Irrigation Company reported to Sanpete County Sheriff Kennard Anderson Tuesday afternoon that there was a problem at the dam The cement chute off the spillway in the river bed is breaking up and he feared that it could effect the of the dam if it continued to stability teriorate The water is cutting back into the bank on the side of the spillway and loads of large rocks were being brought in to help stabilize that situation Tuesday On Wednesday water was retained in the reservoir so that work could be done Sanpete County has really taken a beating because of the flooding conditions Buchanan stated that 80000 sandbags have been placed in the county 42 bridges are washed out or unstable and close to 12 roads are closed due to the flooding Thirty' slides are currently moving in the canyons from Indianola south Ten major slides on the eastern side of the v ley have the potential of causing probThe others lems with communities Buchanan stated are not in a critical area Buchanan stated that in the county Fairview is the top priority because of the slide activity in the canyon and the location of tlie city being close to the mouth of the canyon Mayfield is the second priority due to the two major slides in Twelve Mile Sanpete County Search and Rescue Commander Barry Bradley stated that people should stay out of Twelve Mile Canyons “It is a dangerous area" Anderson warns that any unauthorized in the canyon will be issued citapeople tions Buchanan stated that he flew the county two days ago and there is an tremely high level of snow with water content “As of this date I think the county has pulled together" he stated "and without the help of the people we in the state we are now" He be wouldn't further stated that all of the cities in the ::: county are ready for the high run otT One of Gunnison City's sewer lines which runs under the Sanpiteh River was washed out last Wednesday evening A 24 hr pumping operation is the only solution to mediate protecting homeowners in the vicinity of 2nd West and 2nd South form hav ing their basement backed up with sewage until the high waters recede and the repair in the line can be made The break was discovered when city employees went to check out a call by Bob Sorensen's wife that her basement was being flooded with river water Immediate work was done to plug oil' the manhole on the south side of the Sanpiteh The city then utilized Billy Nay's 4 inch pup to flush the sewage out into the middle of the river Mayor Rodney Anderson spent three hours on the phone try ing to locate another pump fearing that if the one in use bioke down homes m the vicinity of 2nd West and 2nd South with basement drains would fill with raw sewage It is imperative that a pump stay in operation 24 hrs a day Anderson purchased a pump for the citv from Denver Colorado at a cost of S2000 Officials from the State Health Department were contacted about the situation and were concerned about the raw sewage from homes north of the river being George pumped into the Sanpiteh Hansen and two other officials from the State Health Department met with Mayor Anderson last ridav to see if anything else could be done hey stated that it is but a health hazard and threat to life could think of no other possible solution They do however expect the line to be fixed as soon as possible Mayor Anderson estimates that expenses incurred in the repair of the sewer line will be about S50000 The line was lost somewhere between Hal Hendrickson s and Bobby Sorensen's residences under the rive It will be about six to eight weeks before the water will be low enough to operate machinery in the area to dig up the line repair the break and flush the mud out of the lines the Upper UM and Sheep Valley areas Willow Creek Road north Water Hollow is closed Road is closed and the Salina Creek Road has been
