Some parents find a swift swat effective Others prefer You can lecture Crab t Scream What is an appropriate discipline measure at school? This is a decision that cannot be made in isolation Most districts have policies of what is and what is not allowed Teachers arc usually of the general policy and details in most cases arc left up to the individual teacher Whether or not your child has ever had a problem with behavior it’s a good idea to talk with the teacher at the beginning of the year and find out the discipline techniques which arc used at your lnslmollonal Aides at Gunnison Elementary Gunnison Elementary is fortunate enough to have several aides to help with the teaching of our children The aides were present for a workshop on Lee Canter’s technics of succeeding with difficult students Bruce Bartholomew and Robyn Hendrickson were the teachers for this course Pictured from left to right - top row include: Denise Hill Karen Sorenson Jerolyn Young both to understand the importance student behavior in a I’ve personpositive atmosphere ally tried many tricks of the trade and been both complimented and criticized on each and every one When I kept kids after school I was late for faculty and committee meetings When I had them copy senI was tences killing any future motivation for them to become writers When I sent them from the room I was destroying their selfesteem One parent insisted that I slap her son when he talked back When I refused to consider it I was a wimp I think parents understand how limited teachers are in their discipline options and the problems involved in creating a separate discipline program for each individual child Work with the teacher to understand the program If you have concerns voice them but help to come up with viable alternatives Reason effectiveness and the best interests of the child must guide us of managing school The teacher will be able to tell you how minor infractions are handled and what is done in cases which pose danger to other students or a serious disruption of the class Parents and teachers have both become extremely sensitive to the discipline issue It is important for Gloria Worthington Jackie Blood Debbie Sorenson Mary Despain Sheryl Davis Stephanie Young Janelle and Alice Christensen Catherine Bartholomew Nay Radene Pickett Judy Front row - Vicki Ludvigson Jacobsen Camille Sorenson Loraine Henrie Sherry Anderson and Lori Jensen Simple truths for Utah's teenagers It’s finally happened We have a high school student in the house Amy is a terrific girl with a strong sense of values Cut she’s also imwhich means she’s going perfect to make mistakes from time to time And today more than ever before a simple mistake or error in judgment can be devastating to young people emotionally physically and spiritually If I could imprint anything on Amy ’s mind to help sec her through the next three years of public education it would be that she remember these ten simple truths: Everybody isn’t doing it “it” is from drugs to Whatever drinking to cheating on tests there’s always someone you admire who isn’t doing it because they choose not to Emulate that someone Or better yet be that someone for others 2 Bad things sometimes happen to “good” kids You don’t have to be looking for trouble to find it “Good” girls get pregnant too “Good” boys can get in accidents while showing off behind the wheel of a car just as easily as “oad” boys 3 The world doesn’t owe you athing That teacher doesn’t have to give you a good grade unless you earn it Your boss doesn’t have to give you a raise unless you deserve it Most people make their own doesn’t just breaks Happiness You have to take responhappen sibility for your life and make it happen 4 The answers to life’s most important questions can’t be artificially induced Nobody I know of has ever found lasting peace and happiness in a bottle or in a pill or in the back scat of a car 5 You aren’t as invincible as youthinkyouare Is there a junkie - alive or dead for that matter — who didn’t think he would be immune from the strangle hold of addiction? Is there anyone with a sexually transmitted disease who didn’t figure these things always happen to someone else? And is there a paralyzed driver who moments before thccrash didn’t think they had everything completely under control? 6 Popularity isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be When it comes right down to it popularity tends to be about conformity and li ving your life according to the standards of whatever group happens to be “in” at the moment It takes a lot of energy to keep up with the group and there’s constant pressure to conform Why not just live your own life and let people accept you for who you are You’ll be happier and less stressed 7 Experience isn’t necessarily - the best teacher — unless you’re going to throw the experiences of others into theequation You don’t have to stick your hand in the fire to can campaign The ten shade trees arc Red Oak Willow Sugar Maple Weeping Green Ash Thornless Honcylocust Pin oak River Birch Tuliptree Silver maple and Red Maple “These trees were selected to and a provide shade and beauty and variety of forms leaf shapes spectacular fall colors" John Rosenow the foundation’s executive director said The trees will be shipped post Others Trust There’s no such thing as “too far gone” No matter how you’ve made if many mistakes 8 you sincerely want to change and are willing to pay the price you can do it 9 The sun really w ill come up tomorrow No matter how bleak things may seem from time to time they’ll get better Things change fade away And those Problems that don’t - well you’ll figure out a way to deal with them Honest 10 Somebody does care about It may not always be the you people you want to have caring about you Bulthcrc’salwayssome-onand who cares who is there In fact you probably already know who they are because they’re the ones you’ve always been able to No count on That won’t change matter what Not even for a high school student - Joseph Walker know that it’s hot And you don’t have to experiment with drugs or premarital sex or anything else to Call Your News Correspondent Seniors invited to enter Utah Jr Miss Contest The Utah Junior Miss Scholarship program isscekinghigh school seniors to enter the 1994 competitions Utah’s program is a scholarship and honors program that recognizes rewards and encourages while promoting selfexcellence esteem among young women Utah’s Junior Miss will be selected in March of 1994 and as part Free shade trees from Arbor Day Foundation Ten free shade trees will be given to each person who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during October 1993 The free trees are part of the non profit Foundation Trees for Ameri- know they’re dangerous have already proven that them prizes she will win a and an all expense paid scholarship trip to Mobile Alabama to comtitle national for the pete Any high school senior interin the proested in participating gram should contact state chairPO Box man Katherine Panchcri UT 84333 Tele51 Richmond of her phone SOME PEOPLE DON'T WANT paid at the right time for planing and Decembetween November ber 10 with enclosed planting inThe six to twelve inch structions to grow or trees are guaranteed they will be replaced free of charge Members also receive a subnews scription to the Foundation Arbor Day which magazine cludes regular features about tree planting and care To become a member of the Foundation and to receive the free trees send a $10 membership contribution to SHADE TREES Na100 tional Arbor Day Foundation Arbor Avenue Nebraska City NE 68410 by October 31 1993 TO GO TO A HOSPITAL FOR CHEST PAIN SOM COME HERE INSTEAD A em Boys Ccmpdtitivo mxmmiiixm Non compotifve Call t I If you have chest pain call an ambulance and head for the hospital It’s better than the alternative You can help prevent heart disease and stroke We can tell you how Call power Tumbling Classes Are NowB&ginning! Well it’s hard to say by talking to Lillie who replies “I’ve never yet had the feeling of wanting to retire” Bulldog Gear is available at Gunnison High The GVHS PTA is selling offi- cial "Bulldog Gear" (hats etc) bearing the GVHS Bulldog logo All profits will go to the Gunnisweatshirts son Valley High School You can see examples and get an order from the Gunnsion Valley High School Office Support GVHS school spirit by wearing your Bulldog the games! gear to all mm Homes Nashua j Featuring Quality Homes 896-844- 4 Mfg at Affordable prices!
