Show I ( 9 The SunNews Wed Feb i 6 1991 to important to Elderly Ron Nielsen Richfield Care Center For folks to maintain and especially in later years of life they must keep a solid measure of dignity Sometimes older folks cannot always protect their needs and rights of dignity Sometimes it depends on how the younger society perceives aging and the values the contributions of experience and wisdom which can or have been handed down At the Care Center we are constantly reminding and inservicing our staff about doing our best to help maintain dignity and self esteem We care givers at the Center along with families and friends must all do our best in working together to help our loved ones and older friends keep their dignity Let me share four kinds of dignity which we can help our older friends keep as long as they live The Dignity of Physical PriEveryone needs privacy a vacy place to be alone occasionally in order to think our own thoughts and do private things Even when a person needs help bathing and dressing he appreciates the consideration protecting him from the view of others Modesty is firmly entrenched Indifference to it is easily interpreted as a loss of worth and value as an individual Personal Memories To the older person the past is a time when his dignity and worth were established Too often we diminish that sense of worth by failure to take the time to listen to stories of deeds and adventures experienced in earlier years There are five “L’s” to remember when in the company of an older person: Live with him Listen to him Lament with him Laugh with him Learn from him of Preference We Dignity should try to continue to make life an ongoing adventure Encouragement to make choices everyday is Which clothing docs he important feel like wearing today?” Would he prefer coffee tea milk or punch with his lunch?
