Grasshoppers destroying Gunnison Valley Grain crop better than average Gunnison Area ranges Has this been a good year for grain producers in the Valley? According to Rcdgc Hcrmanscn RollcrMills Gunnison this has ended up being a “better than average” year for grain production Many farmers have been concerned since April about this years but for the most water expectations part water conservation along with thunder storms have kept water levels that have produced a very heal ihy crop this year While most fields in the valley arc producing 85 to 110 bushel of grain per acre Mayfield and Axtcll arc the exceptions because of de Young boys pleted water supplies This year farmers in Mayfield can expect about 50 to 60 bushel per acre along with farmers on the Willow Creek canal in Axtcll which also suffered severe water shortages Rcdgc also stated that for the most part this years grain crops were high quality with the kernels filled out well As the grain fields arc harvested this allows for more water to be used on the com and alfalfa crops For com the next 2 to 3 weeks of watering are the critical ones to make sure the kernels are not shriveled or shrunk The car produces the feed value in com Corn production looks good in the Valley where water is still available Also the alfalfa crops looks good for third and some fourth crops this year “The stored water is what pulled us through this year” said Rcdgc as he referred to the majority ot the farmers in this area being served by Gunnison Reservoir Water has been cut back but most farmers have taken better care of their water as they watered more efficiently this year It looks as though there is enough w'ater in Gunnison Reservoir to last farmers through August to complete most of the crops this year competed and brought home the Gold Grasshoppers arc devouring croplands in the Gunnison area and are threatening to destroy the black sage plants that are vital to the sheep industry Utah Deputy Edison Stephens Commissioner of Agriculture said that several areas near Gunnison are being inundated by the grasshoppers and damages could amount to hundred of thousands of dollars ‘One area is four miles wide and four and a half miles long” he said Seven grasshoppers per square yard constitutes an economic infestation and generally triggers a spraying There as program of SQmc kind many as 60 grasshoppers per yard in some places in Gunnison area with an average of 25 to 30 per square yard The areas are southwest of Gun nison and the The freeway land includes hundred of thousands of dollars and is mostly federal state and private range land Generally it would be too late to spray as the hoppers have already matured and have laid their eggs or are in the process of laying eggs A similar situation occurred in the Washington county area where it was decided to wait until next spring to spray One of the reasons in that decision was that the federal will not spend federal government money to spray within 10 miles of a peregrine falcon nesting area or within a quarter of a mile of a prairie dog mound or habitat The Fish and Wildlife Service has been asked to pinpoint exactly where such nests or mounds are so that the area to be sprayed can be decided by Spring Stephens says that farmers and ranchers can spray on their own private lands and has asked the Utah attorney general to determ inc if Utah can help fund any of the Washington county farmers and ranchers who do want to spray “Usually APHIS would wait until next year to spray to be sure of killing the newborn grasshoppers when they are most vulnerable” But there are so many adult grasshoppers and they arc eating the black sage at such alarming rate that the Utah Dept of Agriculture has asked in WAshing-toAPHIS headquarters DC to make a special case of the Gunnison area and spray the area to save the black sage If the grasshoppers are not stopped they will destroy so immediately much feed ont he range lands in Sanpete county that sheepmen will have no place to graze their flocks this winter an fall Only Yearling bulls can be taken on Fishlake Manti this year only yearBeginning
