Show SouKt CettM Supplement To: Gunnison Valley News - The Salina Sun Garfield County News - The Richfield Reaper VOLUME 2 THURSDAY NUMBER APRIL 2 14 1981 Southern Utah Grocery Prices Show Drop in March Grocery prices dropped slightly in March in all counties surveyed in a food survey being conprice comparison ducted by the Utah State Extension Service Prices dropped in all eight counties included in February’s survey Sevier County prices dropped the most by $3 16 followed by Cache and San Juan counties with (3 and $251 drops in prices respectively The other six with their dips in grocery prices from February were Garfield $182 Millard East $185 Millard West $167 Salt Lake $151 Sanpete $129 and Utah 39 cents Six counties have continued in the survey since its beginning in January Most of the six showed modest gains in prices over the three month period Wayne and Sevier counties had three percent increases from January Salt Lake and SanGarfield pete counties showed one percent creases A Millard percentage was not the county was because computed divided into Millard East and Millard West in February Cache v wmmr Meat prices dropped in March In some areas market basket prices in the USU Extension Service survey drop-- ped by as much as $3 over February’s prices The survey has kept track of changes in area grocery prices The counties and prices of the market basket in January were: Cache $2672 Garfield $3012 Millard $2806 Piute Salt Lake $2695 $2636 Sanpete Sevier $2723 $2765 and Wayne $2751 The Piute total did not include round steak which was not available in the area at that time March’s survey included the item however which indicates that area stores must now be stocking the item Garfield at $1 74 and Cache (Garfield this month is at $1 cent drop) at 61 $1 27 a 13 Bacon prices on the other hand dropped in some areas but stayed the same or increased in others Round steak prices also dropped in all areas except Millard East and San Juan where prices remained the same on this item registering at $2 69 in Gunnison A 10 pound bag of U&l sugar is selling tor while in Gunnison the $4 49 in Manti price is $5 49 Other items were found to tx about the same in price but most Cheddar were higher in Gunnison cheese Cherrios and Green Giant corn were found to be close in price The price of pound of lettuce took a dramatic dive m some areas while In San actually increasing in others Juan the price dropped from 31 cents to 14 cents In Millard East it dropped from 35 cents a pound in February to 16 cents a pound in March Increases tn the price on this item were noted in and Sevier Cache Garlield Sanpete In Sanpete the price rose Counties from 32 cents to 49 cents it was In compiling the results to note the differences in teresting prices within Sanpete County itself In Manti the market basket total was the total was $2594 In Gunnison The two $2816 or a $222 difference cities are about 14 miles apart Going down the list prices varied by five to 10 cents on most items One ten pound bag for example was of russet potatoes listed at $198 in Manti while The prices on the 19 items in Manti and Gunnison respectively were: milk $1 91 $1 97 eggs 85c 96c margarine 67c 79c ground beef $1 59 $1 29 round steak $2 49 $2 29 bacon $1 59 $1 75 chicken 79c 85c lettuce 39c 59c potatoes $1 98 $2 69 carrots 29c 49c corn 47c 49c tuna $1 07 $1 28 mushroom soup 35c 39c orange juice 47c 45c salad dressing $1 49 $1 25 white bread 79c 89c sugar $4 49 $5 49 Cherrios $1 49 $1 49 and cheddar cheese $2 77 $2 76 In Carbon County prices also varied by a couple of dollars between the stores surveyed There the cut rate stores as expected tended to have slightly lower prices while the chain store prices tended to be slightly higher The high and low in the area were $24 93 (cut rate store) and $2612 (chain) Four stores were surveyed to come up with the $25 46 Carbon County total the survey does include Since (lettuce vegetables carrots) part of in prices may be ac- the decrease counted for by these items coming into season Also meat rices dropped in March Hunt assistant manager at Safeway in Richfield said He said that stiff competition may also account for part of the drop in prices Bart The trend toward lower meat prices does show up in this month’s survey where Cache County ground beef is selling for $119 for pound regular ground beef In Wayne County (which is the high) ground beef is selling for $179 This checker counts out the change as she helps a customer The March survey by the USU Extension Ser- - vice found that prices have risen in most areas by percent since the survey began in January to 3 PRICE COMPARISON SURVEY TAKEN IN MARCH BY THE UTAH STATE EXTENSION SERVICE Last month the high and low were 0 if!
