Show by Thomas Reeve Sanpete County Agent This the past year Sanpete County Sheriffs Department reports that they have investigated about 40 thefts and vandalism on farms and ranches in Sanpete County There probably are a lot more that were not reported Most of the local thefts consist of taking livestock feed hay lumber and tractors Over the country farmers re- ported stolen such items as power tools tractors trucks machinery gas and spare parts Our farms are more accessible to burglaries because they are more isolated and not policied regularly Also farm tractors fuel equipment and livestock and feed stuff are not protected from burglaries Farms are easy to burglarize because most of us haven't taken the necessary steps to make our property tough to burglarize “It is practically impossible for us to patrol the whole county” reports Sanpete County Sheriff Kennard Anderson “with only one man on duty at night” What can you do to protect your farm from being burglarized? First you buy good locks and use them on everything including bams gas pumps shops storage and utility buildMost sheds are ings usually only locked with a cheap padlock and a tin hasp Lock up your cars tracks tractors and too equipment Get yourself a good watch dog Most burglars of barking are afraid dogs Use lights around bams and sheds wherever possible Do not leave equipment tractors or trucks out in fields for long periods of time without the proper protection When you are going away for a while in the summer make sure the grass gets mowed stop the mail and newspaper delivery Even a sticker saying the place has an alarm system will stop many burglars One professional farm said he would burglar clear close to one hundred thousand dollars a year and didn’t pay taxes on it Why burglarize a farm?
