Y. U. and the other schools in ' Utah and Salt Lake Counties. The frequent train schedules and low student rates ( 1 Vfe c per mile) have provided a service which we contend, without fear of successful contradiction, excels anything else now or heretofore offered in transportation. Salt Lake & Utah Railroad has paid annually for the past 10 years, an average of $59,000 taxes and thru its payroll, provides a livelihood for approximately 1,000 persons. The Orem Line is a home institution built by Utah people to serve Utah people, and unless the service supplied is used by institutions such as the schools as well the general public, it is a foregone conclusion that the officials of the road will be confronted with the necessity of taking off some of the trains in order to reduce expense of operating frequent schedules without patronage. Certain bus companies who are not operating under authority from the Utilities Commission and who have been furnishing service on a so called contract basis, have disregarded all ethics and judgement of costs and at times have provided what is ruinous competition at prices which cannot be maintained over a period of years and at rates which would not be approved by the Utilities Commission for any company legally operating as a common carrier under the Public Utilities Act. Football, basket, ball and other excursions, provide students with an economical trip to Salt Lake City or elswhere and return and an entire group can go in one party, having a much better opportunity for the development of school spirit prior to a game than could be enjoyed by traveling in private cars or in bootleg busses. The hazards of the highway and parking difficulties can be forgotten and a good time would be had by all. The relationship between the Red Cross and the home is the most vital factor in its existence. Our work with veterans and civilians is known as Home Service. In disasters it is toward the rehabilitation of homes that we direct our efforts. Of the Junior Red Cross it has been said by Thomas W. Gosling, superintendent of schools in Akron, Ohio, that it has almost limitless possibilities for contributing to the stability of the home. The contribution of First Aid and Life Saving to home life is apparent when we consider that more accidents occur in homes than in factories. As one wit has expressed it, If you want to get hurt, there is no place like home. Red Cross nurses made 934,-10- 0 home visits last ear. Home Hygiene is one of our greatest services, with 874 chapters issuing 32,626 certificates during the past year. And so on, every service contributing its indispensable factor to finer, happier, healthier home life. During the past year the Payson Branch of the American Red Cross employed Mrs. Evalina D. Reed, R. N., of Provo, Utah County health nurse, to instruct classes in Home Hygiene. Mrs. Ried reeieved a hearty response from the ladies of Santaquin, Goshen and Elberta, organizing four classes in Home Hygiene in these three comstudents were munities.
