The officers and membership the Garland Lions club' wishto thank every person and organization for the support accorded the Where & Beet Days celebration The success of the event was the work of scores of persons we could ot contact to thank personally but whose' effort READING DOWN 8 PRICE TO THE March 1949 of es SIDE WITH THE EDITOR — Wheat and Beet Days are over once again and by now most of those who worked so long and hard to put over their assigned activities are rested up enough to look back upon their efforts and see that in many ways they were quite enjoyable They are even able to remember the successes of the days An outstanding memory for everyone is the parade It was a good parade with a larger than usual number' of floats and with larger and more elaborate floats than ever before In fact there is some basis for the suggestion that the floats are getting too big and too expensive They could he just as effective and be somewhat smaller But it was to remember pleasantsomething ly for a long time Exhibitors and prize winners at the highly successful flower show listed their residences from Preston Idaho on the north to This Brigham City on the south event justly attracts wider interest than any other one celebration activity with good reason The vaudeville show at the City Park was another event that won high praise Everyone liked it and looks forward to a similar show another year Other events too deserve mention for their excellence and all who put them on deserve credit for the good work they did The fact that there were no concessions with their rides and shows to separate visitors from their money was a source of satisfaction to many who came to the celebration There will be just that much more legal tender in local circulation for the next few The Main weeks as a result Theatre open all day provided adequate entertainment for those who had time to avail themselves of it and it is a permanent part of our own community The Times offers congratulations to the officers of the Lions Club from F M Peck president and general chairman of the celebration down thru all the rest of the committee chairmen and the officers and members of all the other cooperating organizations both men and women for a good job well done Pacific Railroad The Union owns the only rail routes in northern Utah Idaho Montana and western Oregon and Washington Any rail shipments originating in this area start on their way from Union Pacific stations The Union Pacific can offer a rate over their given own lines from Garland to Denver but if you would like to have your shipment go to Ogden only by Union Pacific and there have it transferred to the Denver and Rio Grande W’estern for the rest of the way the UP would make a short haul charge from here to Ogden that would subincrease your total stantially costs Altho all railroads do this to insure the largest possible volume of business to themselves into and out of the territory they serve the D A R G W is asking the Commission Interstate Commerce to compel tlje UP to let the thru rate prevail from points on lines to Denver for instance when the shipment is transferred to the Rio Grande lines and open up a way for them to increase their revenues without any expense whatever for additional facilities The U P would be the losers Here where the Union Pacific Is cur neighbor fellow citizen and fellow taxpayer we can see no reason for the change The D R G W offers no lower rates or no improvements of service It would not bring any employees here Urreside in our community and contribute to its social and It would economic well being not build any properties on which it would pay taxes into our city or county All this the U P- has done and its lines have made much of the economic developWhat ment of this area possible gains the UP derives from its position in the territory should accrue to it to insure that it will continue to be of the greatest service to the
