I was taught that it was an insult to the baker to split such fresh breads with a knife rather one should break or tear them with one’s bare hands My husband has always mutilated his muffins biscuits and rolls with his knife He says that it would be kinder to always cut such breads in order to spare possible embarrassment to those bakers whose goods may require more than bare hands treatment (And truthfully having broken bread with his family I must admit he has a point!) Also is there a separate rule covering day-ol- d baked goods? Or are there no such things in polite company? Lastly could you please tell me if it is more correct to split one’s muffin vertically than horizontally? GENTLE READER — What an exciting life you must lead with moody bakers lurking near your breakfast table ready to fly into high insult or embarrassment at your every move Miss Manners imagines that this must do a lot to compensate you for having married into a family that serves tough bread At the table bread is not cut but is broken with as you say the bare hands (Never gloved hands) Polite society is certainly not above petty economics such as day-ol- d baked goods but does not distress its company by announcing this to them If the bread is too hard to be torn apart one might consider what it will do to the teeth Miss Manners knows of no humane reasons for all of this etiquette usually being derived from a variety of illogical folk customs rather than consideration of the emotional welfare of those who prepare the food She does know however that English muffins are split horizontally and other muffins vertically DEAR MISS MANNERS — I have little social life Until my husband died two years ago our activities centered on his professional colleagues and their families However I did belong to a group of 10 women who met once a week to study a foreign language have an occasional lunch or go to a play When our first daughter got married I invited these 10 friends They were delighted and in discussing the wedding one asked where my daughter would live I replied that she and her fiance had chosen an apartment One of the ladies (I say “ladies” because nine of them are ladies) said “And you expect us to furnish it for her” My second daughter will marry soon and I want to have as nice a wedding My question is should 1: 1) send an invitation to the person who made the offensive statement since I will be inviting rhe rest of the group 2) send all but her an invitation 3) send none of them an invitation 4) invite them orally and explain to them that I am interested in having a nice social event and am not asking for gifts or 5) send this person an invitation with a note telling her not to send a gift? I have been deeply hurt and want to know what I should do I want to be absolutely correct GENTLE READER — There are two correct choices not five Does that help? 1) You send this woman an invitation because you decide to rise above insult or because you still see the group and don’t want to make a point of excluding her or 2) you don’t send her an invitation because she reacted so rudely to a similar one Miss Manners will back you whichever you do But she won’t hear of your excluding ladies you like or altering your invitations in any w'ay to enter into a highly improper argument about whether or not you expect material returns for your invitation DEAR MISS MANNERS — My husband and I have three small children We always hire a baby sitter when we are invited to spend an evening with friends But today many of our friends have decided to remain “childless by choice” and raise dogs instead These canine children are always more rowdy and rambunctious than my own small human children Their “parents” either smile indulgently when the dog sniffs the canapes or keep interrupting the conversation to yell at the little furry d creatures darlings — but never are the banished from the room If I go to the expense of leaving my children with a sitter during an adult party shouldn’t my host return the courtesy and not inflict animal children on me? GENTLE READER — There is a great advantage in one’s friends having animal rather than human children in that it is permissible to confess to a mild dislike for them The most one can say to complain about the presence of children is “I’m sorry but I’m not very good with children” For animals however it is possible to declare an allergy or if that is not strictly true to imply it with “I’m afraid I have problems with animals I hate to ask this but could you keep him away from me?” Once the dog is safely shut away you can be gracious and say what an adorable dog it is and what a shame that you can’t enjoy it four-legge- Bridge to find East with the queen in which case the jack would force the ace But West won with the queen and continued with the ace and Both sides vulnerable NORTH Q954 ?Q6 0 A106 another club 5V2-10- M 1999 women s summer fun shoes Save on a large group of hot shoes for the season sandals and fabric casuals from famous makers included 1 0M 5-- 1499 HANG TEN® FOR SUMMER!
