Show investigator TAYS PAYS compliments TO MORMONS after making a special trip to io salt bait lake city to visit and study the mormon question dr J xi 14 meriam of the university elementary and high schools of the university ot of missouri at columbia mo gave the Jol following lowing account of his investigation in the missouri university college paper 1 I found the mormons cormons a very hospitable and agreeable sort of people politeness lit eness and an attempt to be congenial are an important part of their religion dr meriam 1 says he was asked to speak in one ot of the sunday school classes and was introduced as a colleague of prof C A ellwood to whom the attention of mormons cormons has been called by the opposition to mormonism found in one of his books so the class was especially interested in what Professor Meriam had to ii say ty they seemed to be very well pleased with the part of my speech in which I 1 said that more provision ought to be made for pleasures odthe of the children that the children ildren eh are not interested in religion today because most of the churches make religion too dignified and serious clr for ilie them rii professor 1 meriam says 1 I do not approve 0 of the manner in which children take part in the religious services of the mormons cormons Mor mons he continued but I 1 think the attitude of parents and church in rearing chil dren Is good they give the children 1 something to do in which they are interested te and which they can understand island the children enjoy church services the mormons cormons are intensely cicil in their religion and church work tho the church owns a large store in salt lako lake city in which tho the mor mons of good standing are given a discount the store Is run on the cooperative basis badts the people have an admirable civic pride and are very progressive it Is part of their religion to obey the laws in spirit many of the improvements are due directly to tho the mormons cormons Mor mons the city put me greatly in mind of munich germany drinking fountains are placed along the streets at short ini and good water is kept running the surplus flows into the gut ter so that there is s running water in the streets all the time the crossings are made so that one avoids the tho the water these constant streams are a great aid in keeping the streets clean the dirt is simply pushed to the gutter and Is carried away in their everyday life I 1 found the mormons cormons entirely like other people said professor berlam one could live among them for ten years I 1 believe and not know that they have a peculiar religion without being told in tact fact they are entirely different from the people mormons cormons are thought to be by those who are not informed 1 I visited the university of utah while I 1 was there and the christain professors on the faculty told me that a number of the professors are mor mons and that they have no moro more trouble in the faculty than in any other school where there are professors of different faiths than christianity so tar far as professional work goes the difference diffee nce is not noticed one of the church officials gave me a mormon bible it is not so satisfactory as the people I 1 read a little in it but had to lay it down in in disgust I 1 do not understand how they can believe in it it is written in a style similar to our bible telegram |
