it was really good to catch up But what does a cosmic ray guy do at a lepton photon conference anyway7 Well like most of my colleagues in the cosmic ray sector of physics I do come from an elementary particle background So heard about a lot of very interesting stufT providing many flashbacks to my graduate school days For my fixed target experiment at CF RN the Furopcan acceleraPhD did a tor laboratory in Geneva Switzerland Now as a cosmic ray guy am doing a fixed target experiment in (he earth atmosphere At CF RN the beam came out of a man made accelerator and the pride of the accelerator guys was that they could tell us exactly where and when lo expect our particles and what their would he There are interesting stories to tell about their trade for energy ample how they discovered that the tides of the moon stretch the 17 mile circumference of the accelerator Yes just as by ebb and flow in the oceans the tides are felt on land masses and change the circumference of this large ring by roughly one hundredth of an inch This is enough to in turn change the energy of the accelerated particle beam by 0 per million That we can tell if something is not right at the level of 0 per million tells you how well we control these man made particle beams And this intimate knowledge of our beams lows us to design intricate detector systems to measure how things are happening in the very first collision of that accelerated particle In cosmic ray physics we can only measure the overall energy and direction of the particle that came out of the as of yet unidentified cosmic accelerators If we look at many such measurements of individual energies and arrival directions we can hope to extract some more information on what the cosmic might have been where they more likely light as the nuclei of hydrogen atoms or heavy as the nuclei of iron atoms7 The energy of cosmic rays is termined to 20 percent accuracy after the fact and we have no way of knowing how much energy escaped detection as we can never observe the very first interaction of our cosmic particle he patch of sky where the particle is goland with ing to hit is completely random forcing us lo cover large areas of our detectors to collect a few ol them as the showers they initiate disappear Fiat a difference to accelerator physics where you know if into the ground you are missing energy in what you measured because you know exactly what came out of your accelerator You order oxygen nuclei ol a certain energy and don't even have to sign a Fcdl x slip when you take delivery to exactly the spot where you want them in your detector So why bother hopping around the desert in scorching heat to catch a couple of cosmic rays w ithout ever having a chance to look directly at their first interaction and what happens up there where they tirst plow into our atmosphere ’ Apart Horn the question of their origin the answer is that cosmic ray particles come in at energies way beyond what our colleagues can do with accelerators - way beyond dollar So the people at the conference in Korea who use cilities to understand the details of particle interactions were quite intrigued by tlicir poorer cousins really making progress and measuring at energies that dollars can not buy But it is not that we simply know a cheaper alternative to need the precision measurements they make plus some theory their cllorix he expectation that air showers to have a foundation for interpreting our data aie diflcreiit if they are induced by cosmic ray hydrogen nuclei Irom what they are when they are induced by cosmic ray iron nuclei is based on the precision data we got troin accelerator experiments Ae need these guys and their work to know what exactly the air showers arc telling us about the cosmic rays that started them' And they are intrigued by our work at energies far beyond their wildest dreams So the two fields complement each other Another important reason why went to Korea is because had something teresting to tell about the subject of the conference My research on liRes data has produced a limit on the number of neutrinos associated with the highest energy cosmic rays Neutrinos are leptons just like a Dcltan is a also a Utahn So my results were reported at the conlerenec adding to our knowledge about had the pleasure to confer w itli our Korean these elustv e particles And finally colleagues that work with us on the Telescope Array experiment AAilh all the rest ot us here in Utah and in Japan they arc looking forward to learning new physics ftom Telescope Array data As usual comments and questions are welcome at martens kai gniad com work DELTA COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER FILLMORE COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER Intermountain Health Care Facilities C fp0 A |
