residence 12143 Margaret Rose Drive (1240 tah Riverton August 8 9 10 Millard County Fair West) irginia The Millard County Chronicle Progress Reporting The summer agronomical season begins on Fridas the 21st at 07 22 hours more commonly known as the first das of summer This will last ‘3 65 days until September 22nd which then heralds in the autumn months During this week observing conditions will not be the very best for those of us wishing to use optical equipment for deep sks observing due to the intrusion of our moon throughout the night The moon reaches its first Quarter phase on Monday the 17th and rises at 08 Moon set occurs at 01 41 only allowing time to observe in the early morning hours With each passing night earls morning observing diminishes by about 40 minutes as the moon approaches its ull phase on Monday the 24' This condition combined ith our Sun setting around 21 8) hours give little true darkness to observe faint stars globular clusters or nebulae We will have to wait until the beginning of July to enjoy dark skies again During the balance of this month we can still get a glimpse of the planet Jupiter 9 not far from Venus at magnitude 3 9 in our western sky sparkling at magnitude Saturn now is lost in the glare of our Sun along ith Mars Venus is easy to locate since it is the brightest object in the sky almost due west and remains with us throughout the night Sow would be an ideal time to observe Venus since some of the glare will be reduced due to the interaction of the moon's light With a good telescope and a way of reducing the glare of enus it will be easy to note that it passes through phases exactly jv our moon being that it is an inner planet of the Solar System A telescope of at least M) mm (3 15") of aperture ith an eyepiece yielding at least OOX magnification ith the same telescope and eyepiece Jupiter will will reveal Venus' phases easily little bit more magnification may be reveal its color bands running from cast to west storm raging in Jupiter's needed to see the Great Red Spot which is a huge upper atmosphere Since obsers mg conditions are not ideal this week we might want to limit our observwith a Lven the the moon nearest Lurth's neighbor ing to pair of good binoculars the moon will show a few large craters and mountain ranges along with areas that were once thought to be seas hence they were known as Maria or Marcs This term goes back to the Roman times when sea faring people were known as mariners W ith just a modest instrument like that described above literally thousands of craters become easily visible even under low magnification Of course the larger the aperture of an instrument the smaller craters and fine details such as rills valleys mountains and other markings become more apparent under the same magnification For instance at OOX magnification if a crater five miles in diameter is visible with a three inches of aperture glass a six inch glass will reveal a crater four times smaller or roughly 25 miles in diameter Theoretically Wit were not for the Larth's atmosphere this would continue indefinitely but the limits of resolution is around 300 yards with the largest of telescopes Maximum resolution seems to occur at around 12 inches of aperture with larger telescopes only gaming brighter images of a particular moon feature W hen observing the moon it is best not to observe it three days before and after its full phase since features will have little or no contrast It is at this time that the Sun is lighting rather than at an angle to produce shadow s and contrast The photothe surface will below some as to what may be seen with just a small telescope idea graph give p m Delta Four Square ( hurch in hip Services 2'W N IVnl p m Thursday It stitute Young Single Adults
