paranoid time for America as a whole but for those suffering from Schizophrenia the era of McCarthy and the Cold War was undoubtedly Opie) brings to the terrifying In A Beautiful Mind director Ron Howard (yep big screen the tale of John Nash the brilliant mathematician whose financial theories of governing dynamics ultimately earned him the Nobel Prize At first blush the idea of a film about a math genius may not seem like great movie fodder but John Nash is so much more than just some guy who is good with numbers Suffering from at times nearly debilitating schizophrenia John Nash struggled with interpersonal and business relationships on a titanic scale Russell Crowe last year’s Best Actor Oscar winner for Gladiator plays Nash with heart and conviction He is versions of Nash Without equally believable as the lucid as well as the or out of falling prey to the temptation of playing the mentally ill in an control manner Crowe helps demonstrate the difficulty faced by many individuals suffering from mental illness Far too often films portray the mentally ill as rabidly crazy lunatics with wild eyes and foaming lips Not here With Howard’s careful pacing and conservative filming we see Nash as someone w ho believes that at all time he is rational His delusions although clearly grandiose are not so outlandish as to immediately suggest a problem In fact the story is told so well that it is not until nearly hal through the movie that the aud icnce is given a suggestion that all is not as it seems And even when the question is raised we are not quite certain as to what the final answer will be until much later in the film All together this is a film filled to overflowing with wonderful performances Every character is developed with care and precision and acted with performances worthy of all the awards and nominations they have received Of particular note is Jennifer Connelly’s extraordinarily patient performance as Alicia Nash the wife of our beloved but troubled mathematician The struggles she portrays as she worries for and helps her husband draw the viewer into her life in such a way that we in feel the both pity for her situation and pride can't help but way she continually manages to hold things together just a little longer There has been much criticism of this film for playing fast and loose with many of the details of John Nash’s life There have been allegations of Nash being a bisexual and of course criticism for not "exposing” these supposed truths of his life But don't think that any of these things matter For one thing A Beautiful Mind is not a documentary Is a movie designed to entertain an audience based upon and paying tribute to a remarkable life And finally cataloging all of the symptoms of a seriously mentally ill individual would be both time consuming and counterproductive It was not the intent of this film believe to tell you each and every bizane thing ever done by John Nash while in the throes of his illness Rather it was to demonstrate the perserverence and genius of a man who reached the highest levels of his profession regardless of his disabilities for some intense material mild sexual content and some violence A Rated Beautiful Mind is certainly not a movie for younger children simply because of the source material But for those looking for an intelligent movie that will leave a lasting this is certainly worth the time impression Delta City Library News By Marian Dear Aunt Nell: It doesn't pay to listen to a while driving with a pop lurking near Remember I told you about my disaster last week Well it gets worse I tried to fix the tape thinking that could just cut out the stuck section When took it apart I found that I would have to cut out 34 of the tape much to my dismay put in a call to the salesman that sold me the item only to find out that they don’t replace I would have to buy the single tapes 0 tapes Y ikes Hoping for whole thing a better solution then called Time Warner Audio the production company They were very cordial and said of course they would send me a replacement My hopes were up After gave the rep the ISBN number she said this particular title was They had it in the abridged or CD format but not unabridged My hopes plummeted But wait a minute she thought this particular selection was due for reprinting this month Her last instructions: if haven't received the placement tape in a couple of weeks call her back Like said it doesn't pay to was scurrying around the library last week when went by the easy chair In the chair all comfy and relaxed was a Federal Express delivery person He was so relaxed thought might have to put a mirror under his nose to make sure he was still with us Come to find out it was just one of those power pap things We had a great reference question this week A patron wanted to find an old Jolly Stitchers Cookbook Some one was looking forarecipe or two After a few calls to women in the community got a tip that the Great Basin Museum had one and passed that information on to the patron One of the women I contacted said she thought that the group was organized by Dr Bird to give the widows in the community something to do Can you shed any light on this subject? On Monday when we went to open the library door it looked liked that ad on TV where some unsuspecting new employee has to open the door for a big sale thought Terry was going to be out with another elbow injury or worse The display case this month is featuring lost and not found items It’s pretty bad when one of your own employee ends up with an item on exhibit I hope you are gearing up for the annual Night of 1000 Stars on April 7 at 7:00 p m Once again Delta South Elementary has graciously agreed to let us use their gym The readers are all in place prizes procured and stones lined up with a few surprises The library board received their assignments last meeting so things are ready Now all we need are families with their blankets pillows and teddy bears to listen to a night of reading Keep those pages turning cassettes rolling and videos reel ing!
