on Tuesday the 20 at 6:27 MST hatch hav e probably noticed the milder days and some greenery and insects beginning to And as we enter the spring astronomical season constellations such as Virgo Bootes and Hercules begin rising around 2 00 hours over our eastern horizon Simultaneously the to constellations Orion Taurus and Can is Major set a little after 22:00 hours the west The planets Jupiter and Saturn are still visible to our west this month until 2200 the horizon and hours and set earlier with each passing night Venus is new quite low on is still the brightest object in the sky save for the Sun and the Moon This week presents an ideal w indow of observ ing opportunities in that our Moon will e w ill only get a slim crescent be going into its “New” phase on Saturday the 24 mocn after the Monday the 26 which will be close to the western horizon The Moon sets then at 2037 hours giving us plenty of time for deep sky observing in the constellation of Shortly after 2 :00 hours if we look to the east a brilliant star Bootes can be easily seen glowing with a deep orange hue This is Arcturus a star that is 37 light years from us This star has a diameter 25 times greater than our Sun and shines at 006 apparent magnitude Astronomers have actually measured the heat that we receive from Arcturus as being that of a single candle five miles distant A unique fact about Arcturus is its rapid motion through space at 90 miles per second in the direction of the constellation of Virgo This motion has been bringing this star closer to the Earth ever since it became visible to the naked eye 500000 years ago Presently it is almost as its minimum distance from us and 500000 years from now it will be invisible to the naked eye Presently it is the 4 brightest star in the heavens and if one knows where to look in the daytime using the setting circles on a telescope it can be seen with little effort Morin in 1635 with less than ideal optical equipment located Arcturus during broad dayBy This letter comes to you after an eye opening experience we had while working with some very respectful young adults at the CBA High School in Delta We spent a full day with the students and faculty of “CBA” (Conceive Believe Achieve) talking about how bias bigotry prejudices and stereotypes shape their daily lives and how to look past our differences While facilitating and worship we were amazed by the level of awareness and how most of the students began thinking critically on what separates each of us whether it be bias bigotry or our prejudices Each of the students had a great sense of humor and where very polite through the entire eight hour workshop As the saying goes: “It takes the entire village to raise a child” We would like to congratulate the teachers and community members for raising such a wonderful and insightful group of students In all our team facilitators enjoyed the day tremendously We hope students of CBA will use the leadership skills they grasped while attending our workshop We believe that every student there can be changed agent in their community by making their community a better more respectful place for everyone We look forward to working with this outstanding group in the near future Sincerely The Region staff Delta Chamber Comer light! by Michele Fields The photograph to the right of Arcturus was taken with a 12" telescope and one hour film exposure in red light March General Membership Rex Stanworth introduced Daron Smith and John Keeler from the Farm Bureau The Farm Bureau grew with the Extension Service The Board meets once a month and is the watch dog for the area They protect property rights and talk with the State Legislature on issues that concern fanners in Millard County Warren Peterson helps write policies for the Bureau in Millard County Our area developed because of agriculture as most communities do Millard County is the number one producer of hay in the state of Utah There are 640 farms which come to 94000 acres and turns into 300000 tons of hay per year In 2000 we produced 1470000 bushels of barley and wheat 450000 bushels of com There are 195000 cows in feed lots 66000 cows in Millard County 13000 dairy cows which produce 9 000 gallons of milk a day S 76000000 are produced through agriculture a year this is quite an effect in our area Agricultural people like to spend their money at home Since 950 the cost of equipment has doubled about eight times but income has only increased about 20 that means farms have to run more efficient to keep it all rolling 8 of the world produces food for 60 of the world Fanners like to buy from someone they know and trust It takes a lot of money to run a farm about $250000 a year and most of that is spent locally Most farmers hope to make about 30 to $40000 they do it because they like to do it they like the lifestyle The agricultural industry has a great effect on the county they own property and pay to the county When the industry is up a tax base of 3 they can buy new equipment but when it's down they might be able to buy used We need to support each other Daron said The dairies that have moved to the area in a local of feed etc It takes 124 days of spend lot money Millard County They buy work to pay for your taxes it takes 40 days to work for your food because our food is of our income for food The Farmers prayer goes like this cheap We spend 109 “Oh Lord help me to break even this year could really use the extra cash” Farmers are very independent and proud people Biotechnology is controversial activists think there are some dangers to messing with the engineering of food The environmentalist don't like animals raised to slaughter But it’s ok to build Power Plants because I need to be able to run my this summer This technology may help with the production of food extending the time before spoilage Biotechnology will improve fruits and vegetables with higher levels of vitamins and nutrition The Farm Bureau asked that we keep eating and learn policies John said he wished more farmers were members of the Chamber of Commerce You can 6 open 8:30 get Membership Information from the Chamber office at 3:00 We're in the City binoculars and a small telescope Although there are not many nebulae or galaxies within the range of telescope of less than 12” of aperture the number of colorful star pairs is well worth spending
