Centcrfield near Cove Fort Thursday Feb 22 shot himself after being stopped by police officers in Butte Montana Upon further investigation the suspect was linked to another murder and attempted murder in Batesville Missis- sippi ' The suspect Jerry Grant Sheffield was spotted Thursday night just after 10 pm by a Butte City Police Department officer Sheffield still driving Barney's gold vehicle was involved in a $14 gas theft about three miles from a station on west of Butte The Butte officer recognized the car as the possible homicide vehicle from earlier radio broadcasts By chance a high speed chase had just ended in the area so there were many extra higheast way patrol troopers still out on of Butte The officer waited until he was joined by three Montana Highway Patrol troopers before stopping the suspect approximately 16 miles east of Butte The Montana officers attempted to use public address speakers to call Sheffield out of the vehicle on a felony stop but the suspect shot himself in the face with a 38 caliber handgun according to police reports Sheffield was taken to a Butte area hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival Millard County Sheriff investigators were nearing Boise when the call came in regarding Sheffield's death They arrived in Butte at about 530 am Friday nearly 22 'A hours after they were initially called to the murder scene in Cove Fort That initial rail occurred about 7 am Thursday Feb 22 after a motorist and ported finding a body near the interchange in Millard County about 30 miles south of Fillmore The male later identified as Vitgil Barney was found lying on the south shoulder of the Lt John Kimball east bound said the victim had been stabbed at least three times and his wallet and personal were missing While the belongings to relay detail after detail of criminal activ ity perpetrated by her brother in Mississippi according to police reports Sheffield had called his sister a number of times recently and said he had stolen a car in Batesv illc and abandoned it in New Mexico He also told her he had burned someone's trailer before he left and there were other things he would probably be blamed for also While talking to Sheffield's sister Kimball received a telephone call from Sheriff Dav id Bryan of the Panola County Sheriff" s Office in Batesville Mississippi Bryan said there had been a recent arson fire and a young woman had been tied up inside and left to burn The woman escaped and notified police During the son investigation someone from the neighborhood said they were worried about a neighbor in the area that had not been seen for a while The man’s vehicle was missing but nothing at the retired man's home suggested foul play Kimball told the Sheriff he was talking with Sheffield’s sister on Prior to the current tech nology it would take two to three weeks The Sheriff’s Office currently has two finger print experts on staff who make positive identifications and confirm warrants by reading finger prints These are Deputies Jim Masner and Paul Robinson There are four holding cells in the booking room Once the arrestee is in the holding cell they can make as many collect phone calls as they want The calls are monitored along with a closed circuit camera watching and microphones listening to the arrestee The dispatcher can also monitor the arrestee Each cell has large heavy duty windows so the officers can visually observe the behavior of the arrestee If the arrestee is combative one cell without a telephone is reserved for him Part II will explore the inner workings of the jail after the inmate leaves the booking room and what they face Inner working of Millard County Jail By Knox Huntsman What is in the Millard County Jail and how does the system work? Is the jail safe from escape? These and other questions may cross several county residents’ minds as they drive past the Jail on Highway 99 in Fillmore The jail basically consists of the booking room Dispatcher Communications Center control room new and old jail cells kitchen medical examination room program room laundry room and the visitation booths The jail books an average of 27 inmates a day according to Captain Robert Dekker The booking process is the exact procedure when an officer in a cruiser arrests a suspect and brings the suspect to the jail The booking begins at the Vehicle Sally Port according to Corrections Officer Jeff Gehre It is a garage with heavy roll up doors that are only opened by the jail dispatcher with radio contact Once the cruiser is inside the dispatcher closes the door The officer removes the handcuffed prisoner from the rear seat of the car a weapons search is performed and they approach the door to the jail Prior to entry the arresting officer deposits his pistol in a secure lock box and keeps the key No weapons are allowed in the jail This door is opened only by the dispatcher and the officer and pnsoner enters a second Sally Port This area has glass windows allowing the booking'corrections officer to observe the inmate while the arresting officer fills out two forms in act detail indicating all charges etc The corrections officer’s observations are very important at this time The prisoner may be intoxicated may be bleeding or sick requiring a doctor or may be combative or violent requiring additional officers After the booking officer is satisfied that the paper work is accurate he is the only one that can open the door into the book ing room Inside the booking officer pat searches the arrestee removes the cuffs and either the booking process begins or the suspect is put into a holding cell male deputies are available for female mates If the prisoner is intoxicated shoes jacket and hat would be removed and he she would most likely be put in a holding cell monitored very closely and an accurate alcohol test would be performed Gehre said During booking the officer utilizes special computer programs that are with the state’s system The officer enters detailed information with the inmate’s name drivers license number address phone number any scars marks or tattoos speech pattern hair style complexion etc A second computer program is used to document birth place marriage status level of education employer vocation medical history current doctor prior arrest record armed or unarmed offenses prior prosecutions and amount of bail All of these questions are weighted in a special program that determines the risk of the inmate The computer has a Classification Matrix and all weighted questions are evaluated in this program and determines how the inmate will be housed Another computer is called a Banking Computer All money is taken away from the arrestee and documented When leased a cneck is issued for the same amount The arrestee signs a special form that he or she received an orange suit as clothing and is given a towel blanket sheet pillow and shoes The jail clothing is sued in the booking room The arrestee can shower at this time if necessary The arrestee's clothing is taken documented and locked up until released A mug shot West Millard Cultural presents In Concert Peter Davison Up In he I o Friday March 2 2001 at 7:30 (poor copy pm Delta High Auditorium $5 adults $4 seniors & students $20 per family |
