unemployment rate for 2000 at 3 3 percent is unchanged from November's rate Ken Jensen Senior Economist for the Utah Department of Workforce Services explained “Although the unemployment rate was the same in both November and December we should remember that the November rate is Utah's highest since October 1999 The November jump in unemployment is attributed to the month’s unusually bad weather which put many construction workers out of work The December rate indicaremaining at this higher level is an tion that the economy has softened slightly in fourth quarter 2000 The number of unemployment in December 2000 at 371000 is 4500 higher than in December 1999 when the rate was 3 0 percent Nevertheless unemployment in the Beehive State remains very low " Scrv ices Utah’s largest industrial div contains 29 percent of the jobs in Utah Moreover at 5 4 percent it is by far the fastest growing The sum of the remainder of the industrial division is panding employment at the paltry rate of 4 percent Services’ 165000 new jobs since December 1999 comprise 69 percent of Utah's net job creation The services division is thus a primary factor in Utah’s economic strength The computer services industry is expanding employment by over 10 percent On the other end of the scale health services has grow n by only 2 percent Since December 999 Utah’s construction industry has lost 2300 jobs a drop of 3 2 percent The unusually bad weather in November resulted in some of the ter cutbacks occurring earlier than nomial The consolidated trade div ision (w plus retail) is Utah’s of the jobs div ision with nearly It produced 47000 net new jobs in the 8 perpast 12 months a growth rate of trade at 8 perretail in cent Expansion cent accounts for 3800 new positions Wholesale trade’s new jobs number 900 7 percent job growth a modest Utah’s manufacturing division remains in the slump it entered in 999 Only 400 net new jobs have been created in the past twelve months an expansion rate
