difficult not to take 'his law serious when you have seen children law seriously or out onto the pavement and their small thrown from a vehicle 30 feet into the bodies busied up si bad they can't be that children have have invest gated or assisted with in mv 30 years of law been hurt or died in which enforcement along with my fellow officers take child restraint seriously In 1999 the ltah Highway of Millard Countv by law enforcement and medical personnel The law e fori "ment of Millard County (Millard County Sheriff’s Office and Ltah State Highway Patroi have a ZERO tolerance enforcement reflect upon those who have made a difference in our lives Oft times we need a reminder to stir our memories even the good ones One came to me upon seeing the September 4 front page photo of two men for whom have the greatest respect hromclc Progress admiration Mr Robert Nielson and SLU President Steven Bennton SLU couldn't have chosen a better person to honor with The Southern Utah had the Rural honors Award Having been so blessed to grow up in Fillmore privilege of know ing him He has been one of my heroes since my high school days over 50 years ago He made his impressive quiet presence known to all of us setting a great example patiently advising on the importance of continuing education the proper treatas an educator a community ment of others and never gtv ing up In ever area of his life leader and activist in his indomitable yet unassuming way for all that is right and most importantly as a family man who honors his religion by being a model of and for it he exemplifies those things that are good in our society All arc very deserved How It is not surprising that he has received many awards many of us can look hack on our lives and see such incredible accomplishment not just on occasion but throughout li1e° To belike him even in some small or lesser wav is to achieve a high degree of success Manx many of us owe him a debt of gratitude for the example he has been for us President Bennton ts another great educator the best of the best Flow honored we am particularly honored and should feel to have such men as these to guide and lead us hat a pleasure it is for me to know and privileged to know both of these gentlemen work with President Bennton on the SUU Alumni Council and Board of Fellows In these capacities affirm and agree with this great honor bestowed by SUU on Robert Nielson urge the students of Millard County schools to follow his example also urge them to further their education at the prestigious Southern Utah University so that they can also get acquainted with the great man who leads this university He is a man of all seasons and one for all students If you do attend SUU you will certainly get to know him He will see to that He is just like Robert Nielson in that he gives special attention have to every student You will come away with the same high regard and respect that for him Only then will you see and know that both of these fine gentlemen are ones we should pattern our lives after Sincerely Charles B Jackson CPA CEBS and ith the advent of autumn and the last week of September this year we have one of best opportunities to enjov the skies over Millard County Not only do we have moonless eventnes but due to rainfalls and winds during the previous week we also have clear and crisp atmospheric conditions Those that ow n optical aids will be able to fully realize their potential under these near perfect conditions If you happen to have a on bright objects like the telescope with various evepieces mv to push magnification find excellent images even to 60x per inch of planets and binary star systems You will Remen her though that when observing is the norm aperture when generally nebula ffic or (M57) in Lyra the Ring deep space objects like the Orion nebula (M42) low surface bnghtness yields better detail under low macnilication Sunset occurs between 18 21 and lx 13 hours during this week gtv mg ample time to look for faint objects After letting the optics stabilize to the outdoor temperature for hour vou might want to start looking rst towards the southwest at the about constellations of Scorpio and Sagittarius since these will he setting in a couple of hours It is during latter part of this month th tt the summer constellations set earlier and earlier and we start to get a preview of the w inter constellations Asa matter of fact the great constellation of Orion is over our eastern horizon right about midnight and out summer mentioned in previous constellations have long since set to our west As previously articles when we look towards Sagittarius we are looking into the core of our galaxy and this is the reason why we see such a concentration of stars unlike any other region m the are we hut stars mans we see looking outwards and into sky Looking towards Orton the spiral arm that we live For those own ing even a pair of binoculars the region of both Sagittarius and Scorpio contain no less than 20 star clusters and areas of nebulosity Merely scanning these two constellations will yield virtually hundreds of binary star list in this newspaper systems of various color configurations far too numerous to As we say to the summer constellations later in the evening we get the ' Orton The Great Hunter" and Gemini “The opportunity to see Taurus “The Bull Twins One favorite constellation amongst amateur astronomers is Gemini that rises almost due east just before midnight It is can be easily located by its two bright stars Castor and Pollux A diagram has been included herein to help our readers and to locate some of the fine objects in this asterism Probably the first objects to attract our attention are the stars Castor and Pollux The 59 and the 23"1 brightest star in the brighter of the two is Castor with a magnitude of skv It is a brilliant white star 45 light vears from us and approximately 36 times more luminous than our sun This star is probably the finest double in the Northern Hemisphere for those owning telescopes with an aperture ot at least three inches The pair has an orbital diameter slightly greater than the diameter ot our Solar Sy stem This would be about 90 Astronomical Lmts(8 4 billion nnlcs) Remember that A 93 million miles To complete one revolution the or the mean distance of our planet Earth to the Sun companion star takes about 380 years Its orbit is retrograde which is quite unusual for Few are sv our known by astronoactually binary systems in galaxy retrograde stems mers Even more interesting the primary star Castor has another companion visible in amateur telescopes that takes 10 00(1 vears to complete one revolution Further to enhance Castor's interest is that each ot these three tsihlc stars have a companion star making the system of six stars one ot the most remark ihle in the heavens' 16 is the I'" brightest star in the skv and lies about 35 Pollux with a magnitude light years away This star is yellow in color and is 35 times more luminous than our Sun Its diameter has been measured as 9 5 milium miles or about titties greater than our the Sun One of the nicest globular clusters in our hemtspheie is M35 which can be easily be ordinary pair of binoculars and sometimes can be seen ith the naked eyes really dark moonless night It is an excellent dark sky obicit for even a telescope of inches in aperture using 50x magnification Being only 2200 light years distant and diameter has made it a spectacular object as contains many yellow and in quite large will he its massive quantity of white orange giant stars However most noteworthy stars Its location has been noted on the diagram There are of course many other objects in Gemini that are too numerous to discuss tn this text Spend some time in this part of the sky and you will find it quite rewarding seen w ith an on a 2 4 i N Thanks to everyone at Sunsetview Golf course Letter to the Editor would like to take ion a moment and Logan LT fax donnafa exi usu edu there any way to eliminate borers like sawdust at the base of our Aspen trees? Is tah State niversity Extension Entomology Answer by: Diane G Alston Specialist Your aspen trees have aspen borer an insect in the or beetle group This insect problem is very common The injury is caused by the larv ae feeding on the inner wood of the trunk Their tunneling weakens the wood and allows the invasion of canker and decay fungi Borer wounds typically “sap” or "bleed " Aspen is an attractive host for the insect especially when the aspentree is already under some kind of stress or decline Common stresses for aspentrees in our area are iron deficiency (yellow leaves) poor watering regime(too much or too little) aspen leaf spot (fungus causing leaf spot - commonfollowing wet springs or when sprinklers water the leaves of trees)oystcrshell scale (insect that feeds on limbs and trunk of tree sucking outsap) and aspen borer (beetle larvae that bore holes into trunks of trees) Aspen is not well adapted to living in the valley areas They do much bettenn the mountains Suggestions to reduce aspen borer problems Don't plant aspen select another tree species that is well suited to our valley growing areas and not as susceptible to insect injury Grow aspen in a grove with continual renewal of trunks rather than as single specimen trees in your landscape Aspens have a strong ability to sucker and send up new shoots Remove aspen trunks when signs of borer injury are observed (sap running down trunk cccumulation of sawdust at base of hole or tree) and allow new trunks to fill in the open spaces - aspen are quick growers Keep aspen trees as healthy as humanly possible - treat with a chelated iron product in the spring to reduce iron chlorosis prevent sprinkler water from getting onto leaves (promotes aspen leaf spo disease) prune out dead and dying limbs water properly (water as a tree not your lawn - this means infrequent deep waterings) remove trunks infected with borers as soon as they are observed A healthy vigorous tree will resist borer attack You cannot remove the damage that the borers have already done You can help (sometimes) reduce further damage to the injured trunk and others tn the area by insecticide treatments to the trunks This is costly time consuming and involves some risks (pesticides should always be used properly - follow the label directions and wear appropriate protective clothing there may also be environmental safety concerns) You must treat before the adult beetles lay their eggs in the late spring through summer Once eggs hatch and larv ae bore into the trunk the damage is done Chlorpynfos (Durxban) insecticide products labeled for shade trees are the recommended treatment Apply a weeks from spray that drenches the main trunk of the trees every in northern Utah poor cc |
