yard Jo by Betty Speokman One sunny spring Saturday my husband and I decided to take a break from gardening We grabbed our water bottles climbed into the pickup then Dan said “You've been wanting to explore our big backyard let’s go climb Sugarloaf" Sugarloaf is a landmark The tallest butte inside the wide encirclement of mountains surrounding Pahvant Valley Millard County Utah It's visible from all 5 Viewed from valley roads including Fillmore seventeen miles southeast is a large unassuming Sugarloaf mound nsin gracefully unintimidaling from the valley floor to the lower peak It curves in a bow to the taller peak then descends gently northward to the prairie Little did we suspect the surprises this mountain had in store for us Leaving Fillmore on Clear Lake road we passed Howell (named for the unique artesian water that bubbles up from natural wells) Traveling west we watched Sugarloaf s face change and were soon gazing into the inside rim of an extinct volcanic crater The crater’s west and east runs have eroded It yawns mile from the northern peak to a cinder cone its lower peak A dark lava crust covers much of the north rim The wind has stripped off gigantic patches of this crust leaving lighter yellowish tuff creating a colorful pattern that continues into an amazing network of notches across the sharp east Dan said “It looks like a battlement a castle wall" Reaching the base of the mountain we saw a wash leading into the center of the cone serving as a road of sorts We ventured in It winds steadily upward in what is clearly a biker’s paradise The banks of the trail resemble a biker’s with designed “S”shapcd tracks The last climb to the crater floor demanded four wheel drive We parked and climbed a soft steep slope to the floor The v icw est was breathtak to Nevada The crater’s rim loomed in yellow tulf almost smooth solid steep After climbing a dozen feet up its face we realized we were twenty years too late We saw a circle of pillars resembling a crown surround the top of the cinder cone to the south A bikers’ trail led up to w hat w e later learned w as to hav e been a windmill rail trail Descending the thought of our grandson a fearless biker of fifteen who assembles his own bikes “Brian would love this” said “and don’t even want him to know about it" However within the week I'd told him He came and he loves it Outside the butte we chose the road north expecting to join the Delta road and return home Rounding the mountain noticed the north slope ended in a sheer cliff “That cliff is covered with mark rim atop ings let’s go see what they are " We were awed Ihe near 2(H)ft cliff was decorated by layers of molten rock One flow fell over the other creating fanciful intncatc even grotesque designs from the top of the cliff to the floor c wondered how the lava had stopped and hardened in such magnificent designs then realized it had been underwater Ancient ake Bonneville covered about 20 square miles of the great basin in
