Show Millard County Chronicle Progress School board honors retirees Derin Phelps Four retiring employees of the Millard County School District were honored last Thursday by Superintendent Dr Kenneth Topham and the school board Richard Krause of Fillmore Elementary School Dr Barbara Nielson an administrator in the district offices Margaret Lester of Delta Middle School and Karola Reece of Delta North Elementary School were given cards and gifts of appreciation for their many years of service Topham presented a mini biography about each of the retirees to the school board Krause started with the district 1980 He taught at Millard High July School and then transferred to Fillmore Elementary School is “He always willing to help and has a pleasing personality for students and staff" Topham said “He likes to see students achieve and is always willing to take on any task" “I can truly say that at the elementary school we have a team" Krause said Nielson has been involved in education for 3 years The first two years of her career were with the Tintic School District She has been with the Millard County School District for 29 years Nielson worked as a teacher and later came principal of Delta Elementary School and Delta South Elementary School In fact Nielson was the first principal at Delta South In 1991 Nielson became a school district administratorwhere she has specialized in special education She is certified in special education work early childhood education and elementary education “I just want to thank all of you" Nielson told Topham and the school board “It’s been a really good experience I've enjoyed it appreciated the opportunity and hope it has made me a better person" lester agreed to stay on as a substitute teacher in the school district's special 19 1997 Page 3 residents return toFormer Fillmore Fillmore residents Larry and By Harold and Carol Peterson have moved from Colorado (Denver Metropolitan Area) to Fillmore to live Carol is the daughter of Harold and Allie Hatton both who passed away during the past year The Peterson s will be living in the Hatton family home at 130 South 200 V est Larry formerly worked with the Forest Service on the Fishlake National Forest After leaving central Utah the Petersons moved to Jackson Hole WyoForming to work on the Teton National est After resigning from the Forest they moved to Lake County Ohio for Larry to accept a political appointment Subsequent moves took them to Ann Arbor Michigan to Moab Utah and then to Denver Colorado For the past several years Peterson has worked for Boulder County and operated his own company Peterson Consultants His company is a firm specializing in Natural Resource Management Data Management and Customer Service He w ill continue to do some of that work from Fillmore once they are settled Larry also served as the Colorado State President of Sleep Apnea of Colorado Inc Carol has kept busy with several church callings including the name extraction project and prov iding some assistance for some handicapped Carol grew up in Fillmore and graduated from Millard High School in 1955 "It is good to be back home" Carol said Larry continued “W e had our choice of everywhere in the country and we chose Fillmore' e are not here because someone sent us here but because we chose to come to Fillmore We have discussed the possibility for years and now things have worked out just right The Petersons continued saying that they look forward to renewing old friendships with people they used to know They are also looking Viola Hmckle Local couple donates buggy to said Delta Middle School has been privileged to have Lester on its staff “Her love of children was exhibited daily as she worked with them in the Title Program and aided at noon in the lunchroom since 1984" Topham said “That same caring posture was noted with students when she helped in the media center" Topham said Lester was very kind and always had a smile on her face Lester's Formula Three reading groups reportedly enjoyed the time they spent with her cause of her patience in helping them understand what they read and in the way she helped students learn unfamiliar words Since Lester is an avid reader she was able to share her wealth of experiences with her students "Mrs Lester never said ‘no’ to a chal June Former Harold A and Viola B Hinckle and their family have donated a buggy to the LDS Church Cove Fort Historic Site The Hinckle family is honored to be able to present this horse drawn buggy to Cove Fort W e are happy to know that it will be preserved in such a wonderful spot along with the other artifacts that the LDS Church display here The buggy has been in the Hinckle family for many years and has been enjoyed lenge or a task" Topham said “She was always willing to aid the school or any staff member whenever she could She shared with students and staff many of treats” her Lester said she loves to camp fish and spend time with family and friends “I truly loved my job" Lester said “I've enjoyed every day was employed in the Millard School District” Reece the only retiree not able to tend last week’s school board meeting worked for the district for 16 years She spent three years at Delta Elementary School six and a half years at Delta South School and six and a half years Elementary at Delta North Elementary School Topham said he and the school board appreciate all the service and dedication the retirees gave to their schools and the district bv the entire family Many hours have been spent taking our grandchildren for rides They have loved climbing on it to hav e their pictures taken hen they come to isit grandpa and grandma The buggy will be used for display at DS the Cove Fort Historic Site The Church gratefully acknowledge and cepts Derin Phelps One Delta tire engine along with two Millard County Sheriffs patrol cars sponded to a motorhome fire Saturday East Main Street in front afternoon at of Delta Drug and Delta North Elementary School The motorhome owned by Fdward Castillo of Arizona had been left parked at that location The motorhome had been pulling a Ford Taurus car Brert Nielson of the Millard Deputy Sheriffs Office said a couple of County concerned residents called the Millard County Dispatch Center to report smoke coming from the vehicle Nielson said the tire was caused by batteries which were arcing electricity There were no intunes The vehicle was unoccupied Nielson reported minor - l gine damage from the fire Another vehicle fire was reported last ednesday on US Highway 6 about one mile south of Lynndyl Connie Best of the Lynndyl Volunteer Fire Department said the fire department was dispatched about 325 p m Sandra Nielson of Lynndyl said she was driving her 1986 BuickPark Avenue south enroute to Delta w hen smoke filled the passenger compartment The smoke came from the air conditioning vent "It got really really bad" Nie'son said "Just as was pulling over a police officer saw all whiskey during their ride One of the men fell off the train about 4 00 p m along State Route 257 south of Deseret When the train made a stop later the other four got ofT and hitch hiked to Delta where PortCity land Oregon Christopher L Pinson 42 of Tatum Texas and Larry R Stephens 45 of Las Vegas Nevada were each charged with a c lass A misdemeanor count of theft for allegedly stealing 24 bottles of whiskey valued at about $500 a class B misdemeanor count of criminal mischief for allegedly breaking into two railroad containers and two infractions of trespass upon a railroad car and public
