husbands 3000 to 4000 women are beaten to death each year Attacks by husbands on wives result in more injuries requiring medical treatment than rapes mugging and automobile accidents combined woman is abused every 18 seconds (nearly FBI statistics estimate that an American 5000 per day) 20 of visits by women to hospital emergency rooms are attributed to battering killed female 30 are homicide victims of by their husband or boyfriend 75 of abuse persons experienced or itness physical abuse while they were grow25 of women who are abused are pregnant resulting in a high number of miscarriages and birth complications In 50 of all battered women cases the children are beaten as well who commit homicide murder the man who beat their 63 of boys ages mothers Every 5 years the death toll of people killed by friends or relatives equals that of the American death toll in the entire Vietnam war in 10 episodes of domestic violence is ever reported to the police Only 23 of police officer killed in the line of duty died while trying to break up dispute These are not pleasant statistics We would rather not know about them But whether people accept them or not they are fact It’s happening in our country in our state in our neighborhood The one thing that contributes highly to these statistics is Domestic Violence will diminish only when the public refuses to it as public apathy “just a family problem” refuses to accept it as right refuses to accept it as ‘acceptable’ It should be a concern to every American that this sort of violence is going on If you have a problem with domestic violence or know someone who does New Horizons Crisis Center can help Call us at or outside the calling it was a great Evan reported on the circus the Chamber helped to sponsor saying which show for young children Paramount Cubing donated hay for the circus animals was very much appreciated Even though children’s tickets were free up to the day of that events out board pointed the circus turn out was very low Several of those on the However that was the not be successful held on the last day of school have historically be done about the date All in all day the circus was passing through and nothing could Evan said everything turned out okay but stated he didn t think he would want to sponsor another circus He was Rob Droubay met w ith the board as a representative of Delta City Council there to discuss the marquee the mayor and council would like to see in City park The for the city s budget Rob was at purchase price is about $35000 which is a little steep The board the meeting to ask the Chamber board to help raise funds to buy the marquee voted to make a contribution agreed to send a letter to members asking for their help and from the Chamber Travis Jones noted that there are a couple of store signs still up even though the business is no longer open He and Valerie will handle contacting the businesses about to promote taking them down Travis pointed out that he felt it was important not businesses that are no longer in operation Utah Police Officer s Tony said last minute details are being worked out for the Three to four hundred officers Convention which will take place in Delta June and their families are expected The board members were shown welcome banners that will be attached to the two “Welcome to Delta” signs on the outskirts of town Packets with Delta information and coupons from some of the businesses will be given to participants as they register Tony will be putting on a fire power and explosives in display Saturday The comment was made that Delta has one of the best firing ranges the state Other business: the board voted to have a float in the 4th and 24th of July parades certifimade on a was the Chamber office now has its own computer system selection cate to recognize businesses for their improvements the July GMM will be a picnic in city park with guest speaker Andy Johnson from the Department of Rural Economic Development a JTPA worker ill be helping in the office hich w ill allow office hours to be extended for the summer months Millard County skies h Trrzw which occurs The month of June brings the first official astronomical day of DT It is at this time that the Earth is furthest from on Saturday the 2 st at 4 20 a m It is at this time tha! our day and night are of equal the Sun at a mere 93 million miles three minutes shorter duration and then each day after our day becomes approximately It is also the time that our Sun reaches the highest point towards the zenith (the position directly overhead) Of importance is the fact that our observ ing the planets and constelafter 10:00 lations and deep sky objects become restricted to late at night generally pm save the Moon and the brighter planets One of the most spectacular obiects to observe which is not only relatively close but It the Sun is not a or own to instrument does our locate star easy require high powered for that matter even a high quality optical dev ice One can see the sunspots which are But before 6 cycle towards maximum now just beginning to rise in numbers on their Do not even think we can observe the Sun it is imperative that a bit of warning be given of using any optical device directly to look at the Sun! Don't even try to use smoked glass or exposed film to protect your eyes! Although use of these crude methods may appear safe the infrared rays from the Sun can cause permanent and irreversible damage Also for those persons that own a telescope that may be to your sight in an instant supplied with a solar filter in the eyepiece the best thing you can do with this is use it as a sinker the next time you go fishing 3 here are inexpensive solar filters available at a very modest cost that adapt to binoculars spotting scopes or to any type of telescope regardless of size or power The most important rule to remember is that you must filter the Sun's rays before they enter any optical device By the way sunglasses don't work either If in doubt consult a knowledgeable person familiar with observing summer the Sun As mentioned many times before the Sun is our closest star and the only one that can be resolved into a disk with the protected naked eyes or with any properly protected optics Astronomers with their vast array of instrumentation have been able to see similar markings on some of the larger stars such as Betelgeuse in Orion and Antarcs in Scorpio Through other instrumentation astronomers have found that most stars in our universe are not much different from our Sun Some are less violent than otherswhile some are far more violent than others of course like anything else in our universe there are exceptions These exceptions cover neutron stars white dwarfs brown dwarfs and novae of various sorts which we discussed in previous Millard County Skies articles Once equipped with a quality solar filter and some type of optical device be it a pair of binoculars or a small telescope what do we look for? This will depend on the magnification being used In a pair of binoculars that yield OX you will be able to see small dark spots on the Sun which change position daily as the Sun rotates on its axis These will appear small in size so you must look close The photograph below will give you some idea of what to expect This sunspot is a violent solar storm on the surface of the sun This spot is as large as our whole planet earth! The sunspot appears darker than the solar disk only because it is slightly cooler than the surrounding surface temperature Solar disk power area At 25 Activity DayJune 23 1997 the Delta Utah Stake within the solar cycle During peak cycles solar storms have been known to disrupt communications and video reception Also at peak activity is when this causes the very prominent Aurora Borealis or bener known as the “Northern Lights" to put on its beautiful display as high energy ions interact with the elements in our atmosphere The Northern Lights are more prominent as we travel to higher latitudes due to the magnetic effects of our earth’s north and south poles In the southern hemisphere they are more commonly known as the Aurora Australis or “Southern Lights" For those of you that ow
