Blithe Spirit to be presented Shane Ellison Danny Fulton and Brett Sperry First “field” trip of year On Monday October 4 the students of West Central Valley School partici- pated in their First community service "field" trip of the year by going to a real of potatoes! Students worked for a couple of hours and after much sweating and bending collected approximately four hundred pounds of potatoes which they distributed to Delta area senior citizens the next day The students felt confident - PROJ£CT:OF-TH£- that the senior citizens appreciated their efforts and experienced that feeling one can only get from service to others As part of their school curriculum the students feel that service to the community is an important part of the educational process with the important resulting benefit of assisting others This focus goes along with our mono at the school “respect for self others school and the community” WEEK bhc rf rhrc ctatsc aav r Coward’s comedy “Blithe Spirit” will presented by the Delta High Repertory Theater Company on October 13 14 15 and 16 The play starts at 7:00 p jn each night and will be performed in the Little Theater Cost for the production is 5400 adults S300 students and senior citizens Th is is the first play presented by the newly organized Repertory Theater Company and it promises to be one you won’t want to miss Start out your fun early this year and join DHS in its presentation of “Blithe Spirit" DHS Alumni Wanted Bender 8th is the Homecoming Dance The Delta High student body presidency would like to welcome all alumni to come to the Homecoming activities The dance will be Friday the night of the 8 th siarting at 9:00 pm and it will end at 12:00 midnight The Dance will be held at the Fairgrounds building Pictures wili start one hour earlier and will be taken by Susan Johnson On the 8 th we welcome all alumni to come support the Rabbits as they conquer the football team from Emery The game starts at 400 pm Christine ya'ds matctagcoAeatabit Much of the talk about eating healthier foods is just that - talk Although it is hard to track exactly what people eat it is fairly easy to track what they buy Consider some of these gleanings from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey: The largest food expenditure for the average US household is cola at about S90 per year This is followed closely by cereals at S87 per year The number are a little deceptive The average family spends more on soda than whole milk but combined expenditures for dairy products is closer to 5 30 per year Even though red meat often gets in the press ground beef and lunch meats still outsell chicken prepared foods outsell fresh fruits and vegetables we spend more on candy and chewing gum than fruit juice and we spend twice as much on potato chips as we do whole potatoes Have we reduced sugar and fat in the diet? Again the numbers say “no” Household spending on sugar and sweets increased 10 percent between 1986 and 1991 Spending on fats and oils increased 14 percent during the same period Part of the reason for these dismal numbers may be that few people cook Although the number of meals people eat at restaurants has gone down over the last three years the number of meals people order “to go" has steadily creased Another indication that people are cooking less is the increase in meals These are often convenience foods Pizza accounts for about one in 20 meals eaten at home compared to half that 10 years ago Still another indication of the desire for fast food at home is the increase in microwave oven ownership About 82 percent of all US households own a microwave oven This is more than triple what is was 10 years ago However we’re using them less for cooking and more for heating up convenience foods So while talking more about eating healthy is a good start the food that actually makes it into our homes seems to indicate we aren’t doing much other or than talking Statistics don’t do they? With the consumption of cereal going up and the consumption of whole milk going down does that mean more people are eating dry cereal? oodS SUMMER HOURS Mondays 9:00 am until 12 noon April 1 - September 30 520 East Topaz 4 Utah w— apur V tot ut If iai29t Mtsax char $an i FREE! 1993 charade cude Save?! to the American Heart Association Finding the fat in prepared foods will be easier than ever with the new nutrition label required of food manufacturers by the Food and Drug Administration The new label requirements will be featured at the AHA's annua HcartFest held at participating October grocery stores nationwide ’ “When foods claim to be or life’ it’s hard to know what those things mean" said Emily relabel the with new “But RD quirements these terms cannot be used unless the product meets legal standards set by the government At HcartFest we'll explain how to read the new label t and plan a menu" The new label lists such things as total calorics calorics from fat and the amount of saturated fat cholesterol sodium and fiber per serving It also lists your daily values which is the upper limit of fat and cholesterol you can safely have every day if you normally eat around 2350 calorics For vitamins and minerals your daily value goal is 100 percent of each “HcartFest participants can obtain a brochure on how to read the new label” said Wilkerson "It will define terms like ‘Light’ or ‘Lite’ and ‘Cholesterol-Freeso that you'll know exactly what those claims mean The broch ure will also cover what J— oroduct must contain in order to make health claims regarding high blood pressure or heart disease” The HcartFest event launched in Big game hunt The big game hunts will soon be underway statewide In general terms the deer populations are down while the elk herds held even or slightly creased The drought year of the late 1980s and early ‘90s reduced the deer herds by slowing down reproduction In normal or good habitat years (habitat being food water shelter and space) we can expect some of the yearling docs to have a fawn while almost all of the older does will have at least one and usually twins During the drought years yearling does delayed having fawns and many of the older does either did not have fawns or only had one As a result fawn recruitment to the herds was down drastically To add to the problem deer went into in poorer condithe winter of tion than normal because the nutritional value of the vegetation on summer ranges was reduced by lack of moisture Then when we had a heavy snowfall the deer had a difficult time moving and finding forage so there was a higher than normal rate of winter kill Elk being a more aggressive animal in terms of being able to search for food fared better than the deer population The elk herds which had been expanding remained about even and in some areas expanded slightly easy 1985 as Food Festival is held at more than 6000 grocery stores nationwide Its goal is to promote eating In addition to educational brochures food products with coupons for from sponsoring food companies some of the local stores will offer "how to shop tours” led by registered dietitians and live food tasting demonstrations radio broadcasts HeartFest is sponsored nationwide by ConAgra (Healthy Choice) The Quaker Oats Company Campbell Soup Company Guiltless Gourmet Keebler and the Momingstar Group (Second Nature Egg Product) The AHA recommends that total fat intake be less than 30 percent of calories eaten each day and that saturated fat be less than 10 percent of total calories Cholesterol intake should not exceed 300 milligrams a day and sodium intake should not exceed 3000 milligrams a day The AHA is the nation’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to reducing disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke which annually kill more than one million American men and women Last year the AHA spent more than S232 million for research support public and profes-- ' sional education and community programs For more information on HcartFest the new food label or how to plan a menu contact
