computer or using a personal computer is die term ''Byte" A floppy disk may have 4 megabyte capacity or a hard disks capacity may be 120 megabytes Once you a have an understanding of exactly what a bvtc isjou will be able to make sense of all the other computereese terms related to the bvte To understand the Byte lets start with the Bit A bit is the fundamental build rg blixk of digital information A bit is either a or 0 off or on "high" or “low” It is either there or it’s not there A bit by itself is rather minor but a single bit may trigger millions of bits into action in a Bits are most useful when arranged in groups of eight called bvtes microprocessor it's also handy A byte is a convenient w ay to store eight relate J pieces of information for representing a letter number or special iharactcr such as the letter A or the The letter A would have the bit representation of (XXXJOl The letter B would symbol look like 1000010 In the computer the letter A is stored in memory or on a storage medium as a byte lixiking like 1000001 We like to round every thing off so we often refer to 1000 bytes as a kilo byte or IK In reality a kilo byte is 2 to the eighth power (2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2) or 1024 bytes A megabyte is a million hues or 2 to the 10th power a gigabyte is a billion bytes or 2 to the 20th power and terabyte is a (pronounced trillion bytes has meg of memory they When a computer salesman is telling you that a really mean 1048576 locations but it is easier to refer to it as meg With this understanding of bytes you now will be able to compare systems w ith your computer crazed friends logically and not feci so inadequate when talking In future articles we will look at disk drives and memory and will be using the byte term Courtesy Ace Hardware cm J
