warm weather approaches many Millard County residents gear up for another season of boating on Gunnison Bend Reservoir located approximately 3 miles northwest of Delta Utah Visitors enjoy the sandy swimming beach shade trees and picnic facilities the park has to offer Gunnison Bend is also popular with a large number of water skiers due to the peninsula of land that juts out into the lake preventing large waves from forming and water temperatures that are pleasantly warm due to the shallowness of the lake As the number of users increase each year at Gunnison Bend safety concerns become an issue To help everyone to have a safe and enjoyable boating experience the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation boating rangers will be patrolling the waters agam this year and would like to remind the park’s visitors of some of the boating laws that have been frequently violated which will be enforced Beach starting a water skier along the west beach within the confinements of the "slow wakeless” buoys is illegal In this area all boats are required to maneuver at a slow wakeless speed which is approximately 5 miles an hour With the many families and children swimming along the beach a boat coming in our out of this area at an excessive speed is a great danger All motorized boats and sailboats must be currently registered Children under the age of 12 are required to wear a life jacket while on the water Boaters over the age of 12 though not required to wear the life jacket must have one for each person aboard and have it readily accessible All boats tow in g a skier must have an observer on board besides the driver who is at least 8 years of age and display an orange ski flag when die skier is in the water (not a pair of red shorts or life jacket) Violators of these laws and all other Utah boating laws will be issued a citation For a list of all Utah boating laws regulations or any further information contact the boating rangers at the Territorial Statehouse
