If you need further information I would recommend that you contact Gun Owners of America (703) They area Washington DC based progun lobby group that can provide some balance to groups like Handgun Control that wrote the Brady bill Sarah Brady is Chairman of Handgun Control Inc Roland Dutson self-pit- y Dear Editor: About the lime that I conclude that am coping well with this being a stroke victim I find I am pracucally wallowing Then my life becomes almost in unbearable ‘cause I can’t express my feelings without being washed in my own tears My children call and I cry Common sense tells me that they didn’t call to hear me cry but cry I do I used to smile at anyone suffering from and thin “No one needs to pity that person heshe has enough self pity to pass around” I try to tell myself that now and thankfully no one expresses undue pity for me The stroke is just one of life’s trials I remind myself and sometimes truly believe that and the reverse side of and that coin is this that threaten to overwhelm me at any moment And where or why does self hatred play such a role in my life? It’s because of the burden I’ve placed upon my loving husband and family I could not expect better care than what I receive from my husband He cares for me gently and lovingly He likes getting me dressed for Sunday School and fixing my hair He’s a good hairdresser thanks to the instructors and students at the School of Gismetology who gave him a 5 minute lesson in the use of the curling brush Many people have commented cm how nice my hair looks And this ts so good for his morale as well as mine It is just possible that putting this all down on paper has been a real therapy for me At this moment there is no self pity in me That is not to say that it won’t return along with its companion but right at this moment I feel great By that I mean I feel I’ve won a battle that needed to be won and physical handicaps have little to do with the real me Does that make sense to anyone other than I? I want to tell you about my youngest Daniel Kris’ grandson baby boy He stays at the Day Care Center at ihc Extended Care Center when Kris is in school He’s becoming quite a little figure to watch as he walks around When I was visiting there recently I saw him walk up to resident Grant Finlinson Mr Finlinson holds out his hand and Daniel gives him “five” and they both just beamed It was such a good thing to see Generations apart but true friends! Sarah Inez Moody Another day dawns in Delta Birds sing their songs as the sun rises to warm the world These little chirping descendants of the dinosaurs are the first newscasters of my day telling me it’s time to get up Do they bring good news or bad? That depends cm how much sleep I got the night before I welcome their songs if I was able to coax myself to sleep before the midnight hour If however I’ve spent the nigh! tossing and turning with troubled thoughts until early morning hours I’m not enthusiastic about hearing their melodic announcements Good news? Bad news? One man’s floor is another man’s ceiling as they say It depends on where you stand People have been asking me lately how I feel about “news” I understand that reporters are becoming figures of fear Some people believe that journalists present “bad news” as the only news in town And some journalists are guilty of that accusauon I do not belong to their school I believe that news is analogous to the weekly wash: You have your clean laundry your dirty laundry and for use of a better term your bloody laundry Some of you may have noticed that I’ve been writing a lot of “human interest features you’d normally expect to find stones” sweet profiles hidden within the colorful Sunday paper I love to do these features Interviews Photo essays about Beauty Queens Trade Fairs Dance Reviews These are the good news stones that bind and sustain rural community life But these “clean laundry" features don’t enhance my sleeping abilities (They do help calm my fears and make me feel safe but nine out of ten housewives will verify that they gain a deeper sense of sausfaclion in finally getung that stubborn “dirt” out than to keep washing the same perfect piece over and over) I’m sleeping fitfully now knowing that there are meatier issues to address sitting just beyond my immediate reach Issues like power plants mines wilderness issues tax structures crimes and misdemeanors These are the subjects I crave to get a bile of chew on for a while and hopefully digest These are the stones that help me to sleep like a baby Hie stones I need to tell are those that will help us comprehend what’s happening: to our land to our money to our lives to our future And hopefully to gain a degree of control over these issues I see that my job is to uoughtfully explain to my readers both sides of these issues Black and white happy and sad good and bad I’m new to the area so it’s taking me some time to wrestle these more complex issues to the mat I’m spending a lot of time doing research I believe that good reporting deals not with what people say they do but with what they do Investigative reporting is an honorable profession holding in its heart the best aspects of teaching history art and science This is not a joh for me it is a calling (Call in me a “Scoop Artist a Trenchcoai”) Dirty laundry news to me defines the stones that revolve around stupid human errors lapses of good judgment Finding dirty laundry takes time Sometimes dirty isn’t worth exhibiting We all have dirty laundry laundry Bloody laundry is another story Bloody laundry news to me indicates that someone has had evil intent This is the laundry that is squirreled away in dark comers festenng from daik deeds Bloody laundry is nearly impossible to find But finding bloody laundry is the backboncof my industry These are the important stones I enjoy telling for evil intent must be stopped at all costs I must admit that I have not enjoyed reporting the soiled stones about the two deputies in Millard County I didn't like seeing those two men in court with their lives in shambles It hurts me to report that a man because of a faulty quirk in his nature has done great damage to his life My heart goes out to them and to their families I do not feel evil intent It didn't enneh me to hang this dirty laundry on the line I won’t sleep well tonight after feeling the shame of these men And tomorrow when the birds come to window to announce another morning I may just wish they hadn’t At least not so soon Media Man! Take two aspirins and call a press conference in the morning June 8th Deadline to control White Top The Millard County Weed Board has declared June 8th as the deadline to control White Top (Hoary cress) White Top is one of the noxious weeds regulated by the State of Utah Under the Utah Weed Law land owners are obligated to control noxious weeds on their property This can be done by a variety of methods including cultivation and herbicide applications The main object is to prevent weeds from producing seeds which cause it to spread Weed seeds can remain viable in the soil for decades compounding the problem Deep cultivation and applications of the herbicides 24-Banvel Roundup and many others generally provide excellent control The Millard County Weed Board would like to encourage everyone with affected land to control White Top and all other weeds on their property For those who may not know what White Top looks like it is a weed that can grow up to 2 feet tall with a white flower The following is a description published in a new full color weed book available from Utah Stale University through the Extension Office: Hoary Cress - Brassicaccae (Mustard family) A deep rooted perennial up to 2 feet tall reproducing from root segments and seeds Leaves are in color Lower leaves are stalked upper leaves have two lobes the stem Plants have many clasping white flowers with four petals giving the plant a white appearance Seed capsules contain two seeds separated by a narrow partition Plants emerge in very early spring and have bloomed and set seed by This perennial is comment on alkaline disturbed soils and is highly competitive with other species once it becomes established It can be controlled effectively with herbicides Four species of hoary cress (G chalepensis (L) G drab a (L) Desv C phbescens (CA Mey) Jamolenko and C repens (Schrenk) Jarmolenko) are common in the western US with differences in seed capsules and fruit used to identify each species Hoary cress is commonly called white top Proclamation Be it known to all that I Don Dafoe Mayor of the City of Della Utah hereby declare May 23 and May 24 Poppy Days in honor of all veterans and heros who have given their lives in time of wars I urge all residents to join with all volunteers of the American Legion Delta area Auxiliary to support this special occasion by donating for Poppys IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Delta to be affixed this 13th day of May 1991 Mayor Don Dafoe Attest: Dorothy Jeffery City Recorder Fillmore area by Reed Jeffery Delta weather by Jay T Rogers by Ken (Dr Killjoy) Rand I don’t know whether it's more credible that President Bush felt tigued while jogging Saturday May 4 or that this is the first time he ever felt fatigued while jogging You’d think Schwith advisors like Arnold warzenegger and John Sununununu somebody would have told him folks sometimes get tired while jogging Not me I don't jog It's fatiguing But Our President is into the vigor thing So when I read the headlines “Heartbeat enforces break for’work hard play hard’ leader” and "Bush remains in hospital for second day” on Monday’s Daily Bungler front page images of brushes with death by less vigorous presidents (not counting Carter’s encounter with the Swimming Rabbit From Hell) came to mind The Chief Honcho of Superpower on the brink of Alpha has death thing before My memory is prenatal thus suspect but I recall when Ike got the sniffles we were treated to running nose er news bulletins of his temperature I recall hearing adults talk about the Vice President being Only A Heartbeat Away I didn't know what that meant then It sounded like a Chevrolet commercial or a Dinah Shore song But now after the speculation on Vice President Dan Quayle’s leadership abilities I appreciate the Ike drama more A possible death in the White House is dramatic even if it happens to somebody you didn’t vote for If it wasn’t so you wouldn’t see reporters gnawing on their thesauri studying the Latin root of “biowords like “atrial fibrillation" and “Pultizcr chemical thyrodism" Prize” with such zest Ike started it He was the first president to We learned a lot about the respiratory system In fact the front page drawing of B ush’s heart (with circles and arrows: “Superior Vena Cava" "Right atrium receives blood from the venae cavea" v “This space for rent” and so on) looked suspiciously like Dee’s from his heart attack Or am I thinking of the movie “King Kong Lives"? Whatever Pundits speculate about VP moving on up every time Our President gets a wart removed from his nose Usually they don’t want to think about iL As with Quayle now past gnashing and wailing of teeth by Eastern Liberal Establishment Etc reporters over the possibility that the V P would get to ride in the front seat have been silly Fish and tosh say I Let's look at the record a roll call of honor of those who’vc stood in the wings A Heartbeat Away: Richard Nixon Lyndon Johnson Gerald Ford George Bush All eventually became presidents except for A1 Haig and look where we are today So there I have mixed feelings about the medical attention Bush got afier his fatigue thing First if he’d been jogging in say Chicago Miami or W alts it might have taken some real screaming to get somebody to call an ambulance (before or after he was mugged) and longer for one to respond if at all Urbanites die from lead poisoning because of such delays so it was lucky a convenient Beihesda Naval Hospital was in the neighborhood that just happened to have a spare bed when Bush felt fatigued Second what about physicians who say too much coffee caused the president’s heart to beat irregularly? I know people whose hearts don't beat at all without caffeine Now we hear doctor’s say his problem Grave's Disease This isn't gallows humor somebody really has a disease named after them What a legacy Anyway it was good to hear the problem properly diagnosed and appropriate treatment prescribed Now if only economics were a science like medicine Fillmore weather GET INVOLVED!
