John drives north from Delta lo Salt Lake where he cashes in aluminum cans copper brass and batteries He calculates he hauls approximately 1500 pounds in crushed cans every 10 days “I buy the cans here for 25 cents an pound and sell them up north for 36 38 cents a pound" He also pays $100 for car batteries and even 25 cents for smaller batteries like motorcycle batteries John would help recycle paper and plastic but they don’t pay enough He's seen prices for aluminum rise and fall there was a time when he could sell aluminum for nearly 75 cents a pound “When they made the landfill it just about killed me Cost me about $2000 a month but I’m starting to build back up again" Things may get better for John when summer comes He’s negotiated a contract with the Great Basin National Park Service to collect all the cans from the tourist season He collects from a wide assortment of people “lots of women and kids who bring in two or three pounds at a time as well as serious collectors who bring in several hundred pounds I’ll go get whatever anyone has too" a California Currently requires nickel deposit on aluminum cans and John has had Nevada scalpers offer him more for his cans than he could get from his outlets in Salt Lake but he refuses to relationships jeopardize his for a quick buck “I don't know how the scalpers are getting around the green State stamp in California but they are Utah and Nevada may be requiring the deposit soon The bill is in the legislature now If that passes I don't know what will happen" “But I’ll survive" Campground hosts opportunities
