The announcement was officially made by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jay B Taggart at a reception Tuesday Oct 9 at the State Office of Education in Salt Lake City Media had advance interview Wamick Monday Wamick is a drafting and cabinetmaking instructor at the DeltaTechnical Center He has taught industrial arts to high school students in Millard County for 24 years At the Tuesday afternoon event Key Bank of Utah presented Wamick with a $500 cash award and gave $250 each to the two 1991 Teacher Kath: leen B Petersen an English speech and drama teacher at San Rafael Junior High School in Ferron and Marilyn Cole Wenzel an English teacher at Dixie High School in St George Wamick said his commitment to education was the natural result of having grown up in rural Utah under the beneficial influence of scout leaders leaders and teachers who were al ways there to provide encouragement and help to young people He is a Elelta High School graduate He received his BA degree at Southern Utah State College in 1967 with a composite major in industrial education and woodworking He got his Master's degree from Utah State University “My classroom is a place where excellent drafting and beautiful furniture are created" Wamick said “because my students know their projects are worth doing to the very best of their ability and that this requires hard work dedication and extra effort I try to help students in need to turn their lives around and set goals for themselves that will lead them to success and not We must be there to build of students to inspire up the them to excel and not to give up" Wamick said he believes education starts in the home and that the other institutions of society should build upon that base to bring about the greatest possible development of the individual “My greatest accomplishment"hcsaid “is to encourage and to assist each student to do his or her best When they accomplish that these students become honest hardworking responsible and productive citizens who want to help others and thereby establish a ripple effect of people who care and love one another" Retired Millard District vocational director Jack Fowles described Wamick as “a giant of his profession" who has worked to improve teacher salaries working conditions and the image of the teacher rather than seeking the added financial incentives from the private sector or educational administration that could have been his Wamick has been a leader in the development of rural vocational education in Utah Employers have even hired people without an interview knowing they were students Fowles said Wamick's students have been among the top vocational students in the slate receiving top honors at Southern Utah State College Vocational Day contests and Brigham Young University 's Young Craftsman Fair They have also received Sterling Scholar Awards Wamick and the two runners-uwere chosen from 18 nominees who were chosen as district com in one area It was in so far that he'd never taken the lime to go look After he finally did he remembered seeing a poster in Fillmore alerting farmers what marijuana looks like and to report it" In some parts of the country particularly in the midwest marijuana grows wild a common roadside weed But there was no doubt these plants were deliberately planted Phillips said Com plants had been removed in a row and the marijuana carefully planted in their place he said "We were happy to go beat the rush so to speak” Phillips said “and harvest a little earlier than was anticipated We were glad to take it off the market" Value of the plants was estimated at about $3000 Phillip said the plants were “without a doubt the largest plants I've ever seen anywhere let alone in this area” The bi ggest one was 2 to 3 feet high in full bud and bloom “There aren’t a lot of people who believe they grow that big" Phillips said “They’re really healthy plants" T wenty to 25 plants were pulled up in the single cornfield “In that number of plants" he said "you're talking a large quantity of marijuana" The Sheriff declined to be more specific about the plant's location saying there were more his be: agriculture’ The second one will be" - for industry’" The second video will be ready for distribution by next summer About 500 copies will be made and distributed as widely as possible Pearson said Copies will go to local chambers of commerce Utah State University the state department of agriculture the governor’s office other ag departments in western states and other counties in central Utah The video will be shown at various state county and local promotional tivities The state will have a copy to show in Pacific Rim countries An alumni network of people who live elsewhere but who have local ties will be developed and contacted about the video Those who respond with an inquiry card will be sent a video which county officials hope will “allow us to get right into their minds and give them a real good view of what Millard County has to offer" Pearson said The video will also be sent to key dairy producers in Chino California and Jerome Idaho who may want to relocate their farms here The video has produced numerous phone calls even before it was finished Pearson said “We think the video will really help us get some kind of national recognition here in this area" he said School About 135 seniors participated in a voter awareness at DHS program Monday Sept The program was sponsored by Utah State University and Utah Extension Service leader Mary Greathouse coordinated the program held in the DHS auditorium in the Participants program included State Rep Joseph Moody who talked about state government County Sheriff Ed Phillips who addressed students about police and the courts and County Commissioner Mike Stylcr and County Clerk Marlene Whicker who spoke about county government Sandra Martin aide to Rep Jim Hansen spoke about government on the federal level Keynote address was presented by USU Extension Agent Dr Edwin Peterson Lt Gov Val Oveson was to have delivered the address as he had done the day before at a similar program in Nephi but he had come down w ith a cold and was unable to attend Peterson a geography professor at USU has been a congressional aide a city councilman and a lobbyist He also directed American Legion Boys' State programs at USU Peterson has lectured high school seniors throughout Utah about voting since the programs began in 1976 The program is arranged by the local USU County Extension Agents at the request of the schools After speakers were introduced and background of the program presented seniors were divided into four smaller groups to discuss government at federal state and county levels as well as police and the courts “Our theory is that the person who holds the office can tell a student what the office does better than anybody else” Peterson said In addition to answering questions from students about her functions as county clerk Whicker was also on hand with Deputy County Clerk Norma Brunson to register students to vote All students who are 8 years old by Nov 6 the date the general election
