Show Pace 6 Millard County Chronicle Procress June 7 aoaBooByBoooObBftaaOflOeow 1990 Delta North Elementary In The News Easton Jackson Mystery solved Simmons elected to board from Mrs Detectives DcAnn urton's third grade class at Della North Elementary School recently solved the mysterious case of the tired town of Listless Lazy Under the direction of in Millard Emily Draper a County the class formed a detective agency and discovered the problem-laof nutrition knowledge skipping breakfast and forgetting to use the plan daily Clues to this mystery were discovered as the students in distown guise of course interviewed members (teachers and students at the school) The third grade detectives reviewed the facts of good nutrition and its importance to them during a project Emily initiated and completed as part of her foods and nutrition study this year As part of this project Emily used the foods and nutrition section of the program entitled “Blue Skies Below My Feet" The students donned “space helmets” (made from paper sacks) and learned what getting good nutrition was like for astronauts during a space flight As an attempt to experience this first hand Emily had the students journey outside to hang upside down from the tncky bars then eat a cup of chocolate pudding in this position Students also tried their hand at designing space food containers that had the capability to have water added as a means of rehydrating food and that would not leak in any position Students also had the opportunity to try dehydrating food taste astronaut ice cream and learn about food labeling and compare their calorie intake with their energy output This is the fourth year Emily has taken the nutrition program into the schools She says “Blue Skies is a fun new program I am anxious to teach it again next year" Emily has been involved in the program for six years and has completed numerous projects She is currently involved in several projects She and all its says "I really enjoy She thinks all youth opportunities” should take advantage of the program If you are interested in the opportunities has to offer contact the USU Extension Office in Delta or Fillmore B Delu High School Principal Bart Simmons was recently notified that he has been elected by his peers in Region X to serve on the Board of Directors of the Utah High School Activities Association His term begins July and will be for two years Mr Simmons replaces Ivan Rowley principal of Richfield High School who will finish his term June 30 Mr Simmons said he is looking forward to serving on the board and hopes to represent the interest of his constituents effectively “I believe there needs to be some changes in philosophy and approach in order to better serve the young people of the state and particularly the smaller schools in rural Utah” Mr Simmons has been principal of Delta High School for the past six years he previously serve as assistant superintendent in Salem Oregon for ten years and principal of North Salem High School for two years Previous to his tenure in Oregon he served as principal of Rawlins High School in Wyoming for five years He has been an active sup- Valicia MHS NEWS Bart Simmons porter of all school activities and was an outstanding athlete in high school and college He would like to see some constraint exercised by the UHSAA in the number of activities sponsored but was highly complimentary of the association for pursuing outside corporate funding sources and effectively managing it’s current programs “I believe the outgoing president Lynn McArther has done a good job I have enjoyed my association with him and the incoming president Daryl Nelson superintendent of Rich County" “I have observed genuine concern for the young people of this state by my colleagues and believe they will continue to work hard to insure quality programs continue in the future" Next year Delta High will host the State Girls Softball tournament as well as Region X Boys Basketball and Large Group music Mr Simmons was recently selected the Outstanding Secondary Principal of the year in Arts Education by the Utah Alliance for the Arts and Humanities “I just enjoy seeing young people develop their talents and grow into young adults here in Millard County there are some wonderful people it is a great place to Moore Moore accepted Valicia Moore daughter of Henry andTcrcsa Moore DcltaUtahhas been accepted for admission to Harding University and will be among the 1000 new students to enroll for the fall semester Moore is a graduate of Della High where she was active in speech and debate and Vice President of Delta City Project Teamwork live" C29GB0D03B American Heart Association intertiainmeiirt 0 ©hannels— The ©hoice Os Yws!
