the American Legion Department of Utah was recently awarded a competitive grant of Si 42000 from the Agent Orange Class Assistance Program to conduct a comprehensive program for Vietnam veterans and their families living In remote or rural areas who have a child with a birth defect or other developmental disability The goals of this program according to the Project Director Vonda Launtzcn are to enable these families to benefit from greater access to and utilization of the same quality system of social medical and rehabilitative services as families living in urban or suburban areas These services include assisting their children to be mainstreamed into programs in local communities where they can participate fully in and working activities community jointly with those Vietnam veterans and their families to enable them to become about their highly knowledgeable child's condition and to become successful advocates for their children The DCHP’s program will be targeted at Vietnam veterans and their families living in rural and remote areas of Utah Idaho Nevada and the Wyoming Navajo reservation The Agent Orange Class Assistance Program was established to distribute a portion of the funds created by the settlement of the class action lawsuit which was brought by Vietnam veterans and their families against the United States Government and chemical companies which supplied herbicides used in the U S war effort in Vietnam The Assistance Program provides funding for programs and services of benefit to Vietnam veterans and their families The Agent Orange litigation began in 1977 when a Vietnam veteran filed a lawsuit against the Federal government and a number of companies that manufactured a herbicide known as Agent Orange which was used as a defoliant during the war in Vietnam The suit alleged that troops were exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam and that after their return many Vietnam veterans had suffered disabling injuries or had died as a result of this exposure In addition the suit alleged that the veterans' exposure to Agent among Orange caused miscarriages spouses and birth defects in their children The suit was consolidated and a settlement was reached with the chemical companies before the trial began The class assistance program which resulted from the suit provides funding to programs bringing services to Vietnam veterans and their families which are not currently available DCHP personnel will mount a concerted effort beginning December 1989 to enroll 50 Vietnam veterans and their families who are most in need of additional services DCHP personnel will provide interdisciplinary team evaluations which will be available in educational psychological physical neurological immunological and genetics areas Each family will also be assigned a case manager who will assist the family in accessing needed services in their home community For more information contact the Agent Orange Gass Assistance Program at the
