Show Miflara County Chronicle Progress February 15 1990 Page It WM Rec racquetball winners Utah Jazz Sure Shot competition winners left to right: Christie Greathouse Girls Pictured Elementary Division winner Jerry Stoddard Boys Elementary Division Winner Buzz Intramural Division Winner Sarah Black Girls Junior Boys High Division Winner Robbie Harris Boys Junior High Division Winner These winners go on to State Championships which will be held in Salt Lake City on Saturday Febmary 24 1990 Cowboys rustle up Rabbits in overtime by Jill Finllrson when Delta met Kanab the place was the Rabbit den The outcome was Delta on top in overtime when Marty Laughiin launched a bombing three pointer at the buzzer Wednesday Jan 7 in Kanab Delta and Kanab wee again entered n overtime the score tied at 67 Unfortunately the Rabbit effort didn’t pay off this time The final score was Kanab 74 Delta 72 The Cowboys were ahead the entire first half Finally Delta came alive in the third quarter and scored 20 of their 72 points which lead them into the fourth quarter with a one point lead at The fourth quarter did not decide the winner The score was tied 67 all going into overtime Delta scored first with a Laughiin MILLARD HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLERS most Deltans the month of February brings in wrestling state and region tournaments yet it seems that a new sport is slowly becoming established The state swim meet was held February 9 and 10 at BYU The Delta Swim team swam as the only 2A school at the 3A swimming and To the surprise diving championships of most 3A teams the boys' 200 yard medley relay team of Lance Steele Spencer Scovillc Paul Kerr and Shawn Hamilton ended up thud in the preliminaries That afternoon Coach Tom Hamilton kept the foursome in their rooms to rest and concentrate for the finals At 5:00 the finals for the first four events began After the consolations Lance Spencer Paul and Shawn lined up and prepared themselves in lane number three Their goal of beating Murray’s relay and ending up in second raced through their minds The buzzer was sounded and Lance took off doing the backstroke He came in with thud place Spencer was ne xL He caught the Murray breasts troker and kept Delta in In the butterfly Paul Kerr second lagged behind yet still finished third Finally Shawn Hamilton doing freesthe third place position Lach tyle kept member of the team received a third place medal for their efforts Julie Rose swam in the 200 Individ a Pictured is Ed Lovell of Oak City with cousin Dave Pettigrew of Salt Lake City Dave Pettigrew caught this Mackinaw (Lake Trout) at Fish Lake on 10 lb test It was caught in 50 ft of water on a panther martin spinner tipped with carp meat It took 45 minutes to land the fish through a Whole with help from a gaff The fish weighed 28 lbs 9 oz and was 43 inches tong Fish Lake officials say this is the largest Mackinaw to come through the ice so far this year It is the biggest fish Dave has ever caught He was fishing for 4 5 minutes before the fish was hooked The fish has been certified at the Loa Post Office Ed said they used an auger purchased from Delta Sports Center the day before Division II Tourney: pictured left to right GeneZwaryck 1stplaceRuss Millard Rips on the Rams 92 - 43 Stephenson and Shane Starley took 5th place in the 19 lbs 52 lbs and 160 lbs and Sam DeGraffenreid respectively took 6th place in the 189 lb division The seniors are to be commended for their performances and the leadership they provided Assistant Coach Ben Hunter is excited for the future though “We have a lot of underclassmen who got some good varsity experience this year Many of the teams graduate most of their squ:tJ We have kids like Mike Gates who placed third and this is his first year of wrestling So we should be right up there next year" ual Medley and 00 freestyle Although Julie did not make consoles in the 200 IM she did take ninth in the 100 freestyle with her best time of 1:00 Shannon Lewis swam in the 200 and 500 freestyle In each race Shannon barely missed being in consoles yet she was considered as an alternate in each Teresa Gillen swam the 100 yet she too did not have good enough times to be in the consoles Lance Steele also swam the 100 backstroke He didn’t make finals yet he was ninth in consoles A big highlight was Spencer Seville's breaststroke event He swam hard in the prelims yet took second in his heat and third overall In the finals on Saturday night he ended up with the third pi ace medal behind another sophoHe said" I'm more and a freshman going to beat that freshman next year He’s beaten me every time but not again" From Cedar City a senior swimmer Joe Hughes impressed a number of swimmers and college scouts Hughes swam the 50 freestyle in 21 38 breaking the 3A state record At the finals that night Hughes swam again and broke his own record witha21 17 Hughes’ times qualified him for the Junior National Olympics and at the awards presentation Hughes was presented with Male Athlete of the Year At the end Delta placed eleventh out of 25 teams Lady Eagles Take 2nd at Region: Pepare for State The Millard High Girls Basketball team placed 2nd at the Region Tournament last weekend at Hurricane The 2nd place seated Eagles first played the 7th place Kanab Cowboys Millard won Standouts include Alisa Wright with 15 points and 12 rebounds Noe Yamaguchi had 12 sists Cheryl O'Camb also played well in the championship Advancing bracket the Lady Eagles were next challenged by South Sevier MHS left the gym with victory Debbie Child finished with 13 points Delise Perkins ended with 8 rebounds Noe steals had 5 Yamaguchi Moving on to the championship game Millard challenged the defending champs - Hurricane It was a close game with MHS leading throughout the match until the end when the Lady 2nd place Leo Stewart 2nd place Swimmers take a double third place by Shawn Bills Alan Williams bomber Kanab answered back Th final free throws of Travis Qark of Kanab placed the Cowboys ahead and Delta could do nothing about it The final score was for Kanab Rob Fowles and Craig Thompson had 17 points each Marty Laughiin had three bombers “Our defen sc left much to be desired" said Coach Jensen Delta is ranked third in the region behind North Sevier second and Richfield first “We're hoping by region playoff we'll be ranked second But in order for that to happen North Sevier has to lose and we have to win our remaining three games" said Travis Blackwelder Delta will host South Sevier for their final home game on Feb 14 Valentine’s Day COMPETE AT STATE by Brett Stott The Millard Wrestling team traveled to the SUSC campus in Cedar City to state wrestling chamcompete at the pionships February 9 and 10 The team did an outstanding job They were in second place much of the time but in the end they fell to fifth place missing the second place trophy by only 3 points Outstanding individual performances were turned in by Junior Jeremy Crapo who finished 3rd in the 135 lb class Junior Mike Gates who placed 3rd in the Senior Justin division Kimball took 4th at 145 lbs Sophomore and Seniors Tyrell Ryan Bennett Division I Tourney: pictured left to right Jaramilto 1st place Eagles were overpowered by the Tigers The final score left Hurricane on top by ) For the Eagles Noe Yamaguchi had 14 points and 6 steals Alisa Wright and Delise Perkins each finished with 7 rebounds Following the championship game Millard was presented with a new basketball and silver medals Alisa Wright Noe Yamaguchi and Debbie Child were all selected as team members of the The Lady Eagles will play at Juab H igh at 3: 30 on Thursday ag ainst Juab or Beaver The team has had super support this season and hope it continues for state Congratulations at Region!!! Martin Ludwig has finally completed 150milcsofswimmingandwatcr walking at the pool Just as Martin was nearing the 150 miles mark last year medical problems arose thus postponing his water activities until this year Marlin is congratulated for his perseverance and determination Shannon Lewis is another member of the 50 mile club that has passed a milestone in her swimming She has just completed 100 miles Shannon is a dedicated member of the high school swim team Being a freshman at Delta High School Shannon has a promising future and is looking forward to the state 3A swimming finals at BYU Winter Swim Lessons The pool is once again offering another session of winter swim lessons Preschool classes will begin Monday February 26 Gasses are taught in the After school lessons will mornings begin the same day at 3:30 pm The session runs for 2 weeks and cost $15 Winter swim lessons are excellent for the children because classes are smaller and distractions are fewer than in summer lessons Register by calling the pxl at Freestyle Wrestling It is time for freestyle wrestling to begin There will be a parent’s meeting held Thursday February 15 at 630 pm in the wrestling room at the Delta High School For more information call Van Beckstrom at CHRONICLE PROGRESS Get results with ads Lifeguard of the month Febmary ’s Lifeguard of the Month is Alica Foster She is the daughter of Bill and Jo Foster of Delta Alica w as bom in Seoul Korea She came to the United States al the age of 4 Alica retains some of her heritage in her food preference She loves authentic Korean food and detests the frozen processed or imitation Oriental entrees at the grocery stores! She is a senior at Delta High School where she is the Social Activ ities Chairman Alica is a member of the High School Swim Team and has worked at the pool since May 1988 as a lifeguard swim teacher Many of the pools morning patrons know Alica She lifeguards the AM shift Her hobbies and interests include snow skiing vacationing at Lake Powell snorkcling and of course sw iinming Alica would ike to learn to surf and scuba dive She plans on attending college next year at cither BYU in Hawaii or Dixie College The pool would like to thank Alica for her hard work and cooperation as an employee and recognize her for her efforts and uplifting attitude Congratulations Alica!
