They’ve been at their present location for the past four years Curtis and Fran are originally from Southern California and chose to move to Utah to get away from the hustle bustle of big city life They h ave thoroughly enjoyed their move and really like the Delta area When asked why they chose to participate in the DACCDNES reading program both were quick to respond Curtis commented “We have 18 grandchildren and we know the importance of reading Both my wife and I enjoy reading in our spare time" Fran added “I’m a reader from way back and am very excited to participate in the program” Students who earned 600 Busy Bee Bucks for their September reading activities were awarded a certificate that can be redeemed for a free 6 inch snack pizza with their choice of two toppings anytime during the month of October which is by the way National The students of Fillmore Elementary School have accepted a challenge from their principal Charles Ferguson to turn o(T their television sets and read for a million minutes at home before the end of the school ypar Principal Ferguson issued the challenge last month promising to walk a million inches (about 16 miles) in one school day if the students achieve their goal Already the students have turned off their TV’s long enough to read over 50000 minutes to According Principal Ferguson every student would have to average just 10 minutes of reading at home each night to reach the million mark by May “That’s the easy part" says Ferguson “The hard part is going to be turning off those television sets" Students may only count the home reading they do on days when they watch less than two hours of television Principal Ferguson claims he was hesitant to issue the challenge ‘I really don’t think they can do it" he admitted “They may be able to read a million minutes but they are so accustomed to watching television I just don’t think they can get used to less than two hours of TV a day" The Fillmore Elementary staff is hoping the challenge will encourage both students and parents to be more selective in their he can get in shape for it if he has to “But it’s an awfully tough challenge for the students and I don’t think they will make it" adds Ferguson “Let’s just say I’m not going to buy myself a new pair of walking shoes just yet" “The thing of it is we must live with the living ’’ -
