Elk Foundation held its first annual banquet at the Delta South Elementary r sportsmen- conservationists-elenthusiasts attended the dinner and auction Millard Abe Johnson County Commissioner was on hand to act as aucioneer Approximately $ 900 was raised to benefit Utah elk herds through the auctioning and raffling of bronze and pewter statues wildlife art prints and beautiful Weatherby 7 mm rifle and many outdoor items generously donated by local merchants and sporting goods companies The Delta Chapter of the RMEF is planning to hold its next banquet sometime during the spring in 1990 school classification with third place The Rabbits were ranked as the number one seed going in the tournament on the strength of an regular season record but after winning convincingthe last place team In ly over Millard the first match Delta was unable to maintain its momentum and dropped the second match to the Manti Templars They went on and defeated Richfield later in the day to capture third place Delta had little trouble in dispatching a weaker Manti team by winning in two Neysa Plummer was games the leading scorer with twelve points She was followed closely by tournaSimmons who had Laurel MVP ment seven points with two of those points being aces Coach Lori Bevan said of the Millard game “We just set up our offense and everything worked” She said that the girls wanted the game However the Manti match was a different story Bevan said regarding Manti “I think we overlooked them I think we choked good We’ve got to learn from our felt like we were physically mistakes game of the state tournament on Friday Oct 28 at 5:30 pm against North Sanpete The state tourney will be held in Park City Coach Bevan said “I hope we can go in to the tourney) with a positive attitude and expect to win” Leslie Larson a senior on the Rabbit team said “We’re gonna have to work hard” in order to win the tournament According to Valarie Ekins a sophomore the key to success in the tournament is that the rabbits need to concentrate on our serves and get those in “as well as keeping our attitude up and not getting down on ourselves” Simmons receives MVP honors Laurel Simmons is a senior at Delta High School According to Laurel’s father Principal Bart Simmons of the high school she is also “regarded as the best athlete in the state of Utah in 2A competition this year” Laurel was honored on Wednesday evening Oct 19 by receiving the most valuable player award in the regional volleyball tournament which was held in Delta Laurel has had a tremendous year in Her statistics volleyball competition reflect a definite MVP performance for the year She serves 30 percent of the total points made She has 15 kills in 10 matches this season which is an average of 115 per match Simmons averages 8 points per match and she had 10 aces during regular season play as well as four in the Regional Tournament She has also been a factor in holding 10 of Delta’s matches this year to only two games Laurel was “surprised” at getting the award because Delta only got third in the tournament Simmons is not only an excellent volleyball player but she is good at any sport she undertakes She could become a champion in this year as well as being a top contender in the heptathlon Her father indicated that interest has been expressed in her volleyball skills by Utah State the
