August and Overson Nielson His grandfather I ars Nielson was the first bishop of the Leamington Ward Spencer spent his life as a farmer and served in various civic and church positions He married Bessie May Greathouse July 3 1919 in the Salt Lake Temple Bessie was born April 23 1892 and died March 20 1935 leaving three and Iris children Richard Gordon After Bessie’s death Spencer married her sister Myrtle Greathouse Larsen on August 8 1939 in Salt Lake City Mvrtle was a widow with three sons 1893 hard and money scarce but the ward member cooperated and the hall was finished in spite of financial difficulties In order to raise money a harvest sale was held Ward members donated everything they could-hgrain potatoes a few cattle one horse and even a mowing machine A total of S600 was raised which was practically a miracle for those days The bricks for the hall were made on the construction site Lime was brought in from a deposit in Broad Canyon sand came from the gravel deposits on the hill just south of the new church and the cement was shipped in on the train Ben Sampson from Delta formed the bricks Most of the work was donated by ward members Spencer told of the ward getting a check for S2700 from the Presiding Bishop’s office to help on the new building Quite a number of banks had gone broke and Spencer told his wife he was going to hold on to the check for a few days About a week later the bank went broke but the S2700 was not lost Spencer Nielson was also Leamington’s first mayor and helped improve the town in many ways Spencer’s children are Richard Gordon and Irish Lutham His three stepsons are Robert Russell and Roland Larson His second wife Myrtle now lives in Alaska with one of her sons Spencer and his first wife Bessie are buried in the Leamington cemetery 1 he first home for Spencer’s family was out at Landis and later on they bought a plot of ground here in town from John Anderson that had a house on it Spencer lived there until he died f ebruary 13 1965 at the age of Spencer was sustained as the third bishop of Leamington Ward October 14 1928 His counselors were L Jay Nelson and Welby Finlinson with Jerald J Lovell as clerk Linder his August They were the kids involved in KUT V’s Discovery Ridspeak Tour 1988 Project 2000 According to adult supervisors Allie and Kendall Brown Wayne County Crittendese Wasatch County each ot the young people had to submit a written essay promoting hisher own area of the state of Utah what heshe felt about the state and hisher projections and expectations for the year 2000 Over 100 essays from all over Utah were entered but only 20 were chosen The Utah kids began the tour of then 'I hey have been state on August posed to what’s m Utah by traveling and visiting points ol interest from one corner to the other Here m Delta they visited the Topaz relocation site Ms Brown and Mi Crittendese plained that each of the young people was expected to keep a daily journal while on tour In it likes and dislikes found in Utah descriptions feelings and expectations were to be recorded A highlight occurred the evening belore the Delta visit when the group stopped m Milford That day President Reagan signed the bill for the Japanese who had been interred during World War II to be paid restitution In Milford members of the group had the good fortune of meeting three adults who had been interred (when children) The meeting was a in Topaz memorable moment for adults and kids alike The Discovery Ridspeak Tour 1988 which ended at 3 pm on Saturday August 13 was given live television coverage KUTV declaring the town’s opposition siting a hazardous waste incineration facility anywhere in Millard County Such a facility is being considered in Lynndyl by Rollins Environmental Services Inc The Delta city council had earlier passed a similar resolution At the meeting Thursday Aug 11 council members viewed a video tape waste of a report on hazardous prepared by KUTV After discussing Kim Taylor the issues councilman moved the letter be drafted and sent Councilman Ken Talbot seconded the motion and it was adopted unanimously The letter will also be printed in the s Milled County Clarification Young said he received no calls on the quake Geologist Genevieve Atwood of Utah State University said she was surprised by the quake because it occurred where one was not expected Utah’s major fault line is the Wasatch Fault which runs from Brigham City through Salt Lake City to Nephi Atwood said the unexpected quake activity should serve as a warning to those who do not live along the Wasatch Fault "We’re getting a much better handle on the earthquake hazard on the Wasatch Front but not necessarily the rest of Utah” Atwood said “Utah is earthquake country” The quake was the largest in Utah since 1975 when a quake measuring 61 shook the Pocatello Valley on the border An earthquake that hit in Emery county Sunday afternoon was felt here in Millard County University of Utah geologists say the quake was felt as far away as Brigham City to the north Colorado to the east New Mexico to the south and in Delta to the west The quake measured 56 on the Richter scale Epicenter was about 30 miles south of Price and 14 miles east of Ferron It occurred at 2:03 pm The quake followed two Sunday others which occurred at 12:59 pm and 1:04 pm measuring 35 and 40 respectively on the Richter scale No injuries were reported and only minor damage occurred to homes and in businesses Carbon and Emery Counties Locally Millard County Sheriff’s dispatch in Fillmore logged no calls the quake but
