Show Delta Utah 1800 in out of county-- months $1000 (In Advance) Senior Citizens Copy 50C (65 and older) $15 00 in county $18 00 out of USPS County August 18 1988 7 79 No Vol 0 Large crowd attends meeting in Lynndyl on proposed hazardous waste dump by Ken Rand Officials from a company proposing to build a hazardous waste incinerator near Lynndyl answered questions about the plan at a meeting in Lynndyl Wed Aug 10 About 70 people attended the meeting sponsored by the Lynndyl Planning and Zoning Commission Rollins Environmental Services Inc officials want to build a $30 million plant about 2 Vi miles from the town The plant would employ about 150 people and have an annual payroll of $5 million Officials are now in the process of securing an option on property at the Lynndyl Industrial Park applying for a zoning change and conditional use permit from Lynndyl and applying for state permits Rollins project manager George Martin and legal counsel Frank Willis answered questions from residents of Oak Delta Leamington Lynndyl City Sugarville and other towns Con cerns included the company’s safety record in other states where it operates incinerators including New Jersey Texas and Louisiana contingency spill plans for dealing with an of materials monitoring of emissions life expectancy of the plant and who would be responsible if it was abandoned water contamination safety of truck traffic on local highways justification for the site location and who would examine the site to determine it’s suitability among others In addition a fact sheet distributed by the Rollins officials before the meeting said the facility would: - not process nuclear materials PCBs or dioxins - provide Millard County with approximately $325000 in property taxes per year with about $26000 of that going to Lynndyl pay hazardous waste fees of about $640000 per year ten percent of which - would be returned to Lynndyl - increase traffic by about 100 employee cars per day with three to seven trucks per day bringing materials to the plant accept one or two rail cars daily take one to two years in the permitting phase before construction could begin The fact sheet further said ‘‘Emissions from the stack would be a small fraction of the amount produced by a typical power plant and Rollins facility would be considered a minor source under the clean air act” It said cinerated residue would be deposited in a landfill Overall plans for the site clude such a landfill which the fact sheet said would be “carefully engineered to stringent standards to protect surrounding soils and ground water” Also present was Bob Noble councilman from Logan Township in New Jersey where Rollins operates a site similar to the one proposed at Lynndyl Noble called Rollins “a good neighbor” in the township “There’s no health problem that I know of that can be directly attributed to Rollins” he said He called the plant operators “competent” Noble acknowledged Rollins paid for his trip to Lynndyl but he said before that he got nothing from them “Excuse me” he said “I did attend a luncheon once” “It’s just what you as a community Nohave to find within yourselves” ble said “If you don’t want it you don’t want it If you do want it you do” Speakers were often interrupted by partisan applause and jeers Moderator Tolbert Lynndyl Planning and Zoning Commission chairman told the audience at one point: “Let’s hold it down We’ll dismiss We’re not going CB to tolerate this kind of conduct We’ve all been here a long time we’re tired it’s hot” The meeting lasted over three hours Dr Tom Chandler of Delta who opposes the facility said the meeting was about “70 percent negative and 30 percent positive” Chandler said he believes the plant will be built despite opposition sentiment I’m opposed to it 100 percent” he said “I don’t think it’s safe” He said nothing the Rollins officials said satisfied any of his concerns Connie Law of Leamington also opposes the facility “If this thing is so safe then why don’t they build it in the middle of Salt Lake City or Los Angeles?” she said “Why don’t they put it out in the desert where it belongs?” Martin said nothing would be accomplished overnight “It’s a long pro cess and it’s going to take a lot of meetings” he said “We’ll do whatever is prudent to get the information to the people” Tolbert said the meeting was productive “We had a good attendance" he said “We had a good from Millard County here" Tolbert told the audience: "We are all one big (eel good about seeing community you here It's a healthy situation lor and you to come bring jour questions” Other public hearings are scheduled One will be held 7:30 pm Inns in the Delta High Sshool Sept auditorium Ken Alkema Dneuoi ol the State Division ol Environmental Health and Brent Biadford head ol the State Bureau ot Hazardous aste w’ill attend 1 he meeting was ananged by State Rep Joseph Moods and Sen Cary Peterson Millard County Fair is again a success The 1988 Millard County Fair as county fairs in the past was a most successful event LuWanna Peterson of Hinckley coordinated the various activities attended to advertising and announcements then quietly worked behind the for display scenes as exhibits were being Gloria Roper Miss Millard 1988 and her attendants were joined by Democratic candidate for Congress Gunn McKay at the official opening ceremonies on Thursday August 11 Other highlights included a Kids' Pet Show at Delta City Park a Baby Contest and an Open Horse Show held in the Hinckley Arena All exhibits were housed in Delta South Elementary School by o Fr 4' m HIS WA VILLA M COUh i ft Dawn Carder -- n £ 3 y A J $ -Jic-yv W'i 'S' A7v Urt 6 ' fefr SST5001 -
