Experience the Wildlife by Dave Smith Conservation Officer Session two of the West Millard Community Swimming Pool’s “Learn to Swim” summer swimming lesson 13 program beging Monday June The pool’s “Learn to Swim” program is a product of the American Red Cross using their method to teach Classes from the very swimming beginning student through Advanced Swimming are offered during the summer months Four sessions remain for this summer they are as follows: Session 3 June 27 to July 8 Session 4: July to July 22 Session 5 July 25 to August 5 and Session 6 August 8 to August 19 Each two week session the lesson am and hours are held at 9 10 and most skill levels (classes) are offered each hour This means if a person registers more than one child the children can all receive instruction the same hour The cost if S 15 per student for each session (10 lessons) The “Learn to Swim” program is for ages three years and up For the adults who know how to swim but would like to improve their swimming skills a swimming class is going to be offered in the evening beginning when enough people have enrolled This class will run for 10 lessons and the cost will be $15 Registrations for summer swimming lessons can be made by calling the pool The pool management at asks that lessons be paid for by the Friday before the session in which the child is enrolled in The will help the management presented their annual Spring Musical to two record crowds of parents grandparents and friends The theme for this years production was "Patriotism” Each class kindergarten through fourth grade presented three musical numbers Several of the youngsters from each grade gave speaking parts Our principal Mrs Barbara Nielsen and all of the Staff would like to say thank you everyone for all the help and support given this past school year A great big Coyote Card to all who have helped to make Delta South the very best THE DELTA SOUTH Governor Bangerter will proclaim Utah Free Fishing Day Governor Norman H Bangerter will June 11 to be proclaim Saturday Utah’s first Free Fishing Day during a brief ceremony in the Governor’s office on Wednesday June at 2 pm “take a kid Keying on the theme fishing” Free Fishing Day is aimed at getting more people especially youngsters involved in the lifetime enjoyment of fishing Governor Bangerter will also announce Utah’s observance of National Fishing Week June 6 through 12 a celebration of America’s heritage of sport fishing proclaimed earlier this year by President Reagan The Utah Legislature in 1986 passed Senate Bill 10 sponsored by Senator Fred Finlinson and Representative Mike Dmitrich which authorized the Utah Wildlife Board to establish one free fishing day each year This year marks the first observance of the event Retailers and local wildlife clubs will sponsor several free fishing clinics across the state to usher in Free Fishing Day on Saturday June 11 Jacob and Eli Nielson show a nice brown trout their father Lavelle Locally many of our streams will be stocked at different times this summer Oak Creek above Oak City will be stocked three times this summer with a total of 4500 rainbow trout The trout stocked in our area are raised at the Glenwood hatchery in Sevier County If you are curious on what is involved with raising thousands of fish the public is welcome to tour the facility Generally stockings occur just prior to major holidays Besides rainbow trout Oak Creek has a nice population of naturally reproducing German brown trout There have been some nice browns caught in the pools downstream from the campground Rumor has it that Mormon crickets are good bait for the larger trout Whether you fish locally or elsewhere in the state be sure to check the current fishing proclamation in case Summer school programs THE FOURTH GRADERS from DSE were off to visit the old Territorial State House Museum in Fillmore Friday A day of fun and activities was had by all of the youngsters attending Along with the visit to the Territorial House a visit was made to the Millard County Courthouse where everyone was able to view the large mosaic on the floor of the rotunda At lunch time everyone enjoyed a sack lunch having a picnic at the park in Fillmore Returning to Delta we took the long way home by visiting the Bird Refuge and the Old Mud Fort south of Deseret Everyone arrived back at the school in time to climb back on the buses to go home A fun day was had by all! Dive for Money and Prizes Day is a unique fun day for the Millard County Pool because as far as it is known no other pool around has a diving day like this Swimming pool news Edith Finlinson of Fool Creek is an inspiration to all of us at the pool Several years ago Edith lost her leg due to cancer and because of that she never learned to swim Her good friends of Leamington talked her into going to the pool with them they told her she would feel so much better Edith came to the pool but you could tell she had quite a bit of fear On her first pool visit she didn’t want to let go of the side Edith thought because of her handicap she would not be able to swim She has a Her motto is great attitude though “Make the best of what you’ve got” Edith decided she was going to learn to swim With help from the pool management Edith first learned how to float on her back then she learned to float on her tummy After she was relaxed doing those two things Edith learned how to roll over in the water One step led to another and now Edith swims laps using the proper strokes and breathing techniques She comes to the pool faithfully three times a week and her swimming improves each time she swims Edith says “You know I’ve lived with aches and pains for many years but now that I am swimming the aches and pains are going away’’ Edith we all admire you for your drive and determination to overcome life’s obstacles Another swimmer w ho is doing great is Keith Myers of Delta Last January he became a serious swimmer at the pool Monday May 23 he finished his first 50 miles of accumulative swimming Keith and his wife Victoria have a large family (10 children to be exact) and they are all regular swimmers at the pool In fact four of the children will be participating in the pool’s summer swim team program The pool management knows that Keith will continue his swimming ways and will be to 100 miles before you know it Fish Lake conditions The ice is completely gone from Fish Lake and Johnson Reservoir Fishing has been excellent with rainbow and splake being taken in the greatest numbers Mackinaw in the eight to fifteen pound range are also being taken The road to Fish Lake is clear and officially open All the snow is completely gone from Fish Lake and camping conditions are excellent All Forest Service camping facilities are open Lodging and marina facilities are presently available at Fish Lake Lodge and Lakeside Resort All resort facilities will be open and in full operation for the Memorial Day weekend For information on Forest Service facilities at Fish Lake call: For resort information reservations area conditions and general information call: |
