Show Millard County LSPS Thurs June 2 1988 Page 3 T Business of the Week Local government law is focus of legal firm dingham and Peterson and he is the The latter elected County Attorney position which technically is parttime means that he is the corporate attorney for Millard County as a corporate entity and as such he is the chief law enofficer forcement “But” stresses Warren “I depend on Sheriff Ed Phillips with whom I work very well” Warren is responsible for prosecution for the State of Utah of crimes occurring within Millard County Since assuming the duties of CounWarren works longer ty Attorney hours in order to continue serving his private clients “I keep track of my time” he stated “1 could work r hours every day” In an attempt to keep costs lower for taxpayers and clients the County Attorney is trying to use legal assistants as much as Thorpe Waddingham by Dawn Carder A rural lawyer much like the country doctor is asked to handle just about everything that requires legal advice He is in the words of Millard County Attorney Warren Peterson more like “the proverbial Renaissance man” Unlike his urban cousin the country attorney cannot truly specialize for his services are needed in a variety of areas However the firm of Waddingham and Peterson in Delta tries to focus on local government law Their specialities include water and natural resources law estate planning and civil litigation a native of Thorpe Waddingham Milford Utah finished law school and determined to practice in California it seems had other Destiny plans for the young lawyer The train on which he was traveling stopped for a lay over in Delta A local attorney at that time Sam Cline asked Thorpe “Where are you headed?” “California” was the reply Cline continued “Why not try Delta?” Try Delta is exactly what Thorpe Waddingham did (The year was 1952) and he’s still here today Thorpe first practiced law with Dudley Crafts in the building that presently houses the Utah Power and Light office Later he moved across the parking lot to his present location Today according to partner Warren Peterson Thorpe is one of the four or five experts on water rights in the State of Utah He has also been active in both state and local politics at one time serving on the Utah Senate Warren Peterson smiled when asked “Did you always want to be a lawyer?” His choice of profession was arrived upon in a somewhat unusual manner “I have five brothers” he related “All of them are engineers and I was going to be an engineer I took all the courses at Delta High and I studied hard when it was time to take the AP Chemistry test” The story goes on Having put all of his efforts into preparing for the chemistry exam Warren decided he did not want to take the one in AP English However teacher Marvel Clayton had other thoughts gave him the needed push and Warren took the exam During the months following high school graduation Warren made plans to attend Utah State University as an engineering student Late summer the test results were returned Warren had earned a 4 (top is 5) in chemistry and a 5 in English The unexpected (by Warren) turn of events prompted new ideas in the young man’s head “Realizing I could handle words I wondered ‘What can I do?’ I was terested in both financial security and flexibility So as I entered college I decided to study law” Once at USU Warren signed up for in political then majored science His high school sweetheart was at the time attending Judy Southern Utah State College in Cedar City When Warren completed his studies he and Judy undergraduate were married and together returned to USU There she earned her bachelor’s and elemenchildhood in early degree while Warren partary education ticipated in the Masters program in public administration Once Judy was finished her studies the young couple moved to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and entered law school Upon completion of his studies he was awarded the Juris Doctorate degree passed the bar and became an official lawyer in the State of Utah The Salt Lake City firm of Kirt and McConkie the legal department of the LDS Church hired Warren “An urhe ban practice is more specialized” explained “The firm focused on real estate and water law and I served as legal counsel for the LDS Church on water rights” Both Judy and Warren had planned to settle in an area smaller than Salt Lake City and at one time they almost moved to St George While they were in Salt Lake Thorpe Waddingham called a couple of times in an effort to convince Warren to practice law in Delta “Thorpe was in the Utah Senate at the time he called” remembers Warren “Finally with know ledge of IPP he talked me into coming to Delta That was in 1980” Today Warren wears two (at least) hats in Millard County He is a practicing attorney in the firm of Wad Auctioneer Abe Johnson and PolioPlus Chairman possible “Most important in a law office are the secretaries” Warren stated Hepworth Karen Johnson and excellent Leann Wendy Ambrose--arhas been with us eight years (May she never leave!) She went to Snow College for two years then started working here Later she agreed to study at Utah Technical College for one quarter so we sent her The instructor informed us that Leann was the leading student in the legal assistant program for that quarter!” Joining the firm in 1986 was Richard Thorpe’s son He too Waddingham wears two hats for he is Delta City Attorney Together Thorpe Richard and Warren try to focus on what they do litigation But when anyone calls they do their bests to help If it is they something they don’t handle make every effort to match the client with the right lawyer Warren enjoys practicing law for in his words “the daily activity is the drama of life Working with people is the worst part and the best part of what I do” He also enjoys the continuous learning involved in his profession Along with his professional responsibilities Warren is active in the Oasis He is a Ward of the LDS Church Councilor in the Elders’ Quorum and Gene Zwaryck and Gil Trujillo DARCY REDO tries her chair that tion The furniture was donated Kirk Lewis was by purchased at the Dave Poulsen Rotary Auc- Auction proceeds donated to PolioPlus by Dawn Carder The Delta Rotary Club held an auction on Saturday May 21 1988 at the Delta City Park The proceeds totaling $1045 were donated to Rotary International’s PolioPlus Campaign The local club according to Chairman Gil has pledged $4000 to help Trujillo eradicate polio worldwide Local Rotarians provided equipment services children’s furniture household items flying and golf lessons bicycles along with homemade The weather was pies for auction and perfect everyone appeared to enjoy himselfherself Chairman Trujillo extends special thanks to Peggy Overson of Mom’s Crafts and Dave Young of Quality Market for donating material for signs and posters Sue Dutson of the Chronicle Progress for all publicity Millard County Commissioner Abe Johnson for serving as Auctioneer extraor- dinaire and Gene Zwaryck and Kiik Lewis for providing entertainment during the afternoon Although many Deltans were out of town on the day of the auction the Rotary Club appreciates the community support Every dollar makes a difference in the fight against polio USU graduates Local students graduating from Utah State University at the 95th Annual Commencement exercises June 4 are Janice K Johnson and Robert M Johnson majoring in business Darlleen Camille Corry and Beverly Petersen DeWyze majoring in Education David E Nielson and Marvin J Wilson majoring in Engineering all of Delta Scott E Christensen majoring and J Flint Gehre Engineering Arts and Social Sciences Humanities both of Fillmore James Robert ConBen A rad Science of Garrison Hunter and Brian M Stephenson both of Holden Burnis Agriculture of Oak Education Kent Finlinson City in HOG Richard Waddingham Warren Peterson Karen Johnson in Salt Lake City he served as President of the Elders’ Quorum He was the Charter President of the Delta Rotary Club and he remains reme in that organization He and Judy are the 9 parents of three 2 Emily 6 and Amberlyn is Delta a small town it is home and Warren appreciates the desert and the lack of social structure “Delta is about as egalitarian as a place can be" he commented “and I like that” What is appreciated about Warren Peterson along with his intellect is his commitment to justice He is a principled attorney one with a high standard of ethics Those qualities combined with the expertise of Richard and Thorpe Waddingham Delta and Millard County taxpayers plus all the clients of the law firm of Waddingham and Peterson This a of pooch was caught relaxing early car parked by Delta Drug in the morning on the hood GREAT BASIN CELEBRATION AN OLD FASHION HOLIDAY CELEBRATION June 17-1- 1988 8 EVENTS Events start at 10:00 AM both days Western Culture Parades Artifacts Relics and Antiques Golf Tournament Farm Machinery Displays Early Horse Shows and Exhibits Sky Divers Antique Car Show Old Firearms Exhibit Replicas of Special Races Early Settlers Homes Fashion Shows and Costumes Food Fair Melodrama Productions - Both Art Show Days All Day Ballgames Dancers - Singers Tennis Tournament Performers Swimming - Bowling Old Fashion Dancing BreakfastsBBQ’s 10 K Running Event Fun and Games Celebrity Programs For All Kids FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Delta Area Chamber of Commerce 76 North 200 West - PO Delta Utah 84624 (801) 864-431- 6 s Box 966 'n UtV' (A |
